Lions Week 16 player of the game: Who gets the Game Ball vs. Bengals?

Lions Week 16 player of the game: Who gets the Game Ball vs. Bengals?

It’s Christmas. Let’s focus on the positive for a minute. The Detroit Lions were overmatched in every phase of the game on Sunday, but there were a few good individual performances from the men in blue. Since it’s Christmas (but really because we do this every week), let’s focus on that in this column and give out our weekly Game Ball. Before we get into this week’s candidates, here are the Game Ball standings after 15 weeks. Remember, first place in voting gets three points, second place gets two, and third place gets one. Matthew Stafford - 15Marvin Jones Jr. - 8Darius Slay -...

Lions-Bengals report card: Detroit suffers worst overall performance at worst possible time

Lions-Bengals report card: Detroit suffers worst overall performance at worst possible time

The good performances were few and far between on Sunday. The Detroit Lions completely fell apart on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Here are our positional grades for the game. Quarterback: D+ Matthew Stafford threw a couple dimes in this game, both to Eric Ebron for big gains. But for the rest of the game, Stafford looked indecisive at best, completely befuddled at worst. He was taking too long to get through his read, he hesitated too many times on throws and he turned the ball over late in the first half, likely taking points off the board for Detroit and giving the Bengals one...

Detroit Lions vs. Cincinnati Bengals stock report

Detroit Lions vs. Cincinnati Bengals stock report

It was an up and down game, and with ups and downs you get guys playing well and playing poorly, the latter the bigger story of the Lions playoff hopes. With the playoffs on the line, the Detroit Lions needed some help to get in. They got some of that help today and all they had to do was seal the game against one of the worst teams in the NFL to move into a prime playoff position. Rather than do that, the team put together one of the worst coached and worst executed games I’ve seen all season. And I’ve watched some Browns games. Despite valiant efforts from a few key players, the team...

Jim Caldwell’s time as Lions head coach should be over after Detroit’s performance against Cincinnati

Jim Caldwell’s time as Lions head coach should be over after Detroit’s performance against Cincinnati

The Lions had the chance to make the playoffs, but didn’t get the job done against the lifeless Bengals. It’s time for a change. With the help of the New Orleans Saints, the Lions were still in contention for a wild card spot. With the shortcomings of Detroit’s coaching staff, the Lions are now eliminated from playoff contention. During his tenure, I’ve been a firm proponent of Jim Caldwell as head coach of the Detroit Lions. When an overwhelming majority of fans wanted him out, I took a stand for Caldwell, and was right. Caldwell helped turn around the Lions season in 2016, and led...

VIDEO: Lions fail to challenge key incompletion in fourth quarter

Did Jim Caldwell make the right choice to keep the challenge flag in his pocket? The Detroit Lions’ playoff chances were on life support. The Lions, needing at least two more points to even up with the Cincinnati Bengals with under four minutes left in the game, faced an impossible third-and-23 deep in their own zone. Matthew Stafford scrambled to his right to buy a little more time then heaved the ball to Golden Tate 50-some yards down the field. Tate, boxing out of his defender, had the ball come straight into his arms, but as Bengals defenders swarmed him, the ball disappeared from...

Lions vs. Bengals: What Just Happened?

Lions vs. Bengals: What Just Happened?

A collection of thoughts on the Lions’ huge embarrassing failure. Hey guys. That’s it. The season is now over. The Detroit Lions went to Cincinnati on Sunday and blew their chances for a playoff berth with a 26-17 loss to the Bengals. I’m not going to waste your time today. As always, I have thoughts on this game, these are those thoughts. Time for a rant First let me do this. The Lions went into Cincinnati on Sunday to play a team that had been outscored 67-14 in the last weeks. The worst offense in the NFL, the worst rushing defense in the NFL, a coach who put his two weeks in...

Recap: Detroit Lions self-destruct, get eliminated from playoff contention

Recap: Detroit Lions self-destruct, get eliminated from playoff contention

The wheels are coming off. The Detroit Lions were getting all the help they needed on Sunday. Only one problem: They couldn’t help themselves. Blown opportunity after blown opportunity caused the Lions to meltdown late and they were defeated by the Bengals, 26-17. The game got off to a slow start as both teams traded five total punts to start the game. But the Lions broke the dry spell on their third offensive drive of the game. After a three-and-out for the Bengals offense, the Lions had a short field to deal with. Matthew Stafford quickly cashed in, dropping a perfect pass to Eric...

Join us for the first half of the Lions’ Week 16 matchup. Two more games. That’s all that is left in the Detroit Lions’ 2017 regular season. Before you know it, it’ll all be over and we’ll be throwing our hopes into 2018. But the Lions are far from done in 2017. Should the Football Gods shine down upon them over the next two weeks, the Lions could find themselves in the postseason for the second season in a row. That hasn’t happened for this franchise since 1995. Before we get ahead of ourselves, the Lions must defeat the Bengals in Cincinnati on Sunday. The Bengals are out of...

Lions-Bengals inactives: T.J. Lang, Rick Wagner, Travis Swanson OUT vs. Cincinnati

Lions-Bengals inactives: T.J. Lang, Rick Wagner, Travis Swanson OUT vs. Cincinnati

O-line? More like NO-line. The Detroit Lions will need to win out if they want any chance at making the playoffs this year and they will have to do so with a battered up offensive line. Travis Swanson (concussion) had already been declared OUT on this week’s injury report. T.J. Lang (foot) and Rick Wagner (ankle) will also be INACTIVE against the Bengals. That leaves the Lions with only two starters on the O-line. Corey Robinson will likely fill in for Wagner at RT, and Graham Glasgow will shift over to center once again. Don Barclay and Joe Dahl will most likely fill in the remaining...

NFL Week 16 expert picks: Everyone in Detroit is picking the Lions over the Bengals

NFL Week 16 expert picks: Everyone in Detroit is picking the Lions over the Bengals

Almost everyone is picking the Lions to win their ninth game of the season on Sunday. It’s game day! The Detroit Lions are in need of a win Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive going into Week 17. As long as Detroit can come out with a win (and the Cowboys and Seahawks don’t tie), the Lions will have a clinching scenario for the final week of the season. The Cincinnati Bengals are the team standing in their way, and according to most experts, it’s not much of a roadblock. In the five sites we source for expert picks, only four individuals are picking the Bengals to upset the...
