Steve Sarkisian, beefy dudes running routes, and the value of the element of surprise

Steve Sarkisian, beefy dudes running routes, and the value of the element of surprise

Steve Sarkisian didn’t lose his mind, even if it might have seemed like it in real time. On Thursday night, the Very Weirdest Game of the 2017 Season for both the Falcons and Saints, many odd things happened. I need not re-hash all of them here, but this tweet sums up just how ludicrous everything seemed in real time. Actual Falcons plays on that drive:- Back shoulder pass to Marvin Hall- Pass to Ty Sambrailo- Arthur Blank dive up the middle— Alex (@alexwATL) December 8, 2017 The play I want to talk about is the second one. On 2nd and goal from the one yard line, the Falcons had...

Poe keeps defenses...

Twist Ending Revives Falcons Playoff Hopes

Twist Ending Revives Falcons Playoff Hopes

The Falcons’ win over the Saints provides the twist that could spring Atlanta into January football. Like when Darth Vader told Luke he was his daddy, or when Bruce Willis found out he was dead the whole time, twist endings have a way of sneaking up on you. Sometimes, they ruin the entire movie, and sometimes, it makes the entire thing worthwhile. Thursday night, a lot of dry-heaving Falcons fans would have benefited from a spoiler alert. Boy howdy. Did M. Night Shyamalan direct this football game? Right at the end of yet another bizarro Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints game,...

3 takeaways from Falcons vs Saints

3 takeaways from Falcons vs Saints

The NFC playoff race has gotten really interesting It wasn’t pretty - and Matt Ryan had his ugliest game of the season - but an ugly win still counts and the Falcons made sure they would be in the playoff conversation for another week. At 8-5, they control their own destiny and can still win the division, showing how important the win against the Saints truly was. Here are some key takeaways from the critical win. Thursday night games are the devil The NFL can say what they want, but Thursday night games are hurting the league. The short-week is leading to sloppy games that appear to be...

Tevin Coleman in concussion protocol after Saints game

Tevin Coleman in concussion protocol after Saints game

The electric running back suffered his second concussion since the end of the 2015 season. Late in last night’s stunning win over the New Orleans Saints, we saw the Atlanta Falcons take Tevin Coleman to the locker room for a “head injury.” That usually means concussion, but the team did not confirm it until today. #Falcons RB Tevin Coleman is in the concussion protocol— D. Orlando Ledbetter (@DOrlandoAJC) December 8, 2017 It is not clear if this will keep Coleman out the next game, a Monday Night matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Desmond Trufant returned about a week and a...

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 14 win over Saints

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 14 win over Saints

The Falcons are 3-0 against the Saints in the last three games. The Falcons needed this win. Atlanta moved to 8-5 on the season to remain afloat in the playoff race with a 20-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Who’s up and who’s down? Up Deion Jones Any time you get a spectacular game-sealing interception, you’re going to end up here. The Saints had a chance to take the lead with 1:30 remaining in the final quarter. On Atlanta’s 11-yard line, Drew Brees tried to fit a pass in to tight end Josh Hill, but Jones had other plans, going up high for the pick. He was all over the...

NFC playoff picture: Lions postseason odds fall with Falcons’ win over Saints

NFC playoff picture: Lions postseason odds fall with Falcons’ win over Saints

There’s still a chance, but it’s not looking good. The Detroit Lions haven’t done a great job of helping themselves get back into the playoff race, but they certainly didn’t get any help from others during last night’s “Thursday Night Football” game between the Falcons and Saints. Atlanta was possibly the most realistic team the Lions could jump in the Wild Card race, but thanks to a last-minute Drew Brees interception in the red zone, the Falcons came out on top of a wild NFC South game. According to the New York Times’ playoff simulator, that interception dropped that...

Falcons vs. Saints recap: Take skill and resilience, add luck, blend until smooth

Falcons vs. Saints recap: Take skill and resilience, add luck, blend until smooth

Atlanta’s 8-5 thanks to a hard-fought, absurd win. Every Falcons-Saints game winds up being wild. That usually is because these two teams are engaged in a shootout that is light on defense and heavy on offense, which means high scoring and a lot of fun and stress for both sides. Thursday night’s game was a different beast entirely. Matt Ryan threw three picks and almost threw a fourth, including a truly bewildering end zone lob to Julio Jones that no one on earth thought was a good idea. They backed themselves up and screwed up a couple of drives with penalties, as they are wont to do....

Falcons-Saints post-game injury report: Tevin Coleman suffers head injury

Fact: Tevin Coleman The Atlanta Falcons somehow defeated the New Orleans Saints tonight. It was a truly incredible game and it’s going to take us time to digest everything that went into this win. For now let’s talk about injuries. The Saints got pretty banged up tonight. The opposite is true for the Falcons. Aside from a potential Tevin Coleman concussion, the Falcons stayed healthy tonight. Knock on wood, this is the second straight week where they’ve emerged relatively unscathed. Coleman was hit hard in the backfield late in the fourth quarter. It was a blown play and Coleman...

Falcons 20 - Saints 17 final score: Thursday Night Football at its finest

Falcons 20 - Saints 17 final score: Thursday Night Football at its finest

Atlanta wins a truly ugly, bizarre game, and we’ll take it. We are going to be processing this game for a long time. The Falcons overcame three Matt Ryan interceptions and plenty of sloppy play to win a three point game, while the Saints were injured, penalized heavily, and undone by a handful of mistakes along the way. It was ugly, atrocious Thursday Night Football, but the Falcons won. At the end of the day, we’ll take that. Here’s the drive-by-drive breakdown of this one, which was deeply bewildering. So glad the Falcons are still alive. First Quarter The Saints started the game...

The first half of Falcons - Saints ends on a very weird note

The first half of Falcons - Saints ends on a very weird note

Poor clock management, an ugly interception, and a costly special teams penalty take us to the second half. The Atlanta Falcons were driving into field goal range when things went extremely awry. Somehow, neither the Falcons nor the Saints wound up with points in the final 30 seconds of the first half, but one of them should have. It all began when the Falcons connected with a first down to Taylor Gabriel. The team had two timeouts left and figured to use one with the clock running down, but instead, they wound up letting the clock run down to 12 seconds before attempting to snap the ball....

NFL Week 14 2017: Thursday Night Football

An NFC South battle on Thursday evening Tonight, the Saints take on the Falcons at 8:25 p.m. ET in Atlanta, Georgia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This could determine who ends up taking the division so it should be a hard fought game. Will Drew Brees come out and light it up, or will Matt Ryan continue to try his form from last season? Will the Falcons be able to contain emerging star, Alvin Kamara? Will their own running back duo in Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman be a force to reckoned with? Can Julio Jones replicate the game he had a couple weeks ago? We shall find out soon. Let the...

Thursday Night Football open thread: Saints at Falcons

There’s a big NFC South battle brewing in Atlanta. A few weeks ago, Detroit Lions fans were looking to this Thursday night game with baited breath. The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are facing off in a game that could have huge playoff implications. The Falcons (7-5) are currently on the outside looking in, while the Saints (9-3) hold a one-game lead over the Panthers for the lead in the NFC South. For the Detroit Lions, they need the Falcons to lose at least two more games down the stretch to catch them, because not only are the Falcons a game ahead of Detroit, but they have...

Andy Levitre, C.J. Goodwin inactive tonight against the Saints

Andy Levitre, C.J. Goodwin inactive tonight against the Saints

The Saints are pretty healthy, meanwhile. The Atlanta Falcons are going to have to beat the Saints without their starting left guard. That increases the degree of difficulty, but hopefully won’t make a significant difference in the outcome. Besides Levitre, who is being replaced in the lineup by defensive tackle/guard hybrid Ben Garland, the only other player of note on the inactives list is C.J. Goodwin. Goodwin played well at times a year ago, but has largely fallen out of favor in 2017, and played two disastrous snaps on defense against the Vikings a week. Blidi Wreh-Wilson, who drew...

Saints vs. Falcons: Fascinating Four for Week 14

Saints vs. Falcons: Fascinating Four for Week 14

Can the Falcons beat their bitter rival and keep control of their own destiny? The long-awaited showdown is finally here. For the first time since 2011, the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are playing well at the same time. One of the NFL’s most heated rivalries has taken a backseat in recent seasons. The fire seems to be reignited with both teams getting their act together. It only took two seasons for Dan Quinn to turn the Falcons into a championship-caliber team. After several forgettable seasons, Sean Payton seems to have found the right balance for a once one-dimensional team....
