Arrowheadlines: Steelers DB tries to explain late hit on Alex Smith, CJ Spiller is back

Chiefs QB Alex Smith takes aim at Raiders defense | Mercury News Not that Smith will admit it. Asked about his 9-1 career record against the Raiders dating back to his time with the 49ers, Smith gave his best “aw shucks” answer and claimed to be unaware his games against Oakland were anything out of the ordinary. “To be honest, it’s probably just coincidence,” Smith said in a conference call with Bay Area writers. “They’re all different, they’re all unique and a lot of these last ones have really been close, down to the wire. I hadn’t even known our thought about it until...

Chiefs snap counts show injuries are becoming a problem

Chiefs snap counts show injuries are becoming a problem

The Kansas City Chiefs did change their defense a little bit against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Well, saying they “changed” isn’t accurate. They just played in a way they don’t always do. The Chiefs often have three safeties who play a lot of snaps because you’re often defending the pass. The Steelers ran the ball with Le’Veon Bell 32 times so we saw an uptick in snaps for the Chiefs inside linebackers and a drop in snaps for third safety Eric Murray. We also saw the Chiefs running back usage change due to Charcandrick West’s injury. Sometimes it’s West who comes in on passing...

The Steelers shut down (almost) all the Chiefs star players

The Steelers shut down (almost) all the Chiefs star players

One reason I thought the Kansas City Chiefs might be past a game like the one we saw against the Pittsburgh Steelers is because on offense they have so many playmakers. Shut down Travis Kelce? OK, Tyreek Hill will go off. Shut down Kareem Hunt? OK, Alex Smith is playing at an MVP level. It felt like the Chiefs had too much firepower to lay a total egg, which they did against the Steelers. So, what happened? The Chiefs biggest stars were shut down, both offensively and defensively. QB Alex Smith had his first bad game of the season going 19/34 for 246 yards and one touchdown. The numbers...

Chiefs’ Andy Reid on not kicking FG: “I do what my gut tells me to do”

Chiefs’ Andy Reid on not kicking FG: “I do what my gut tells me to do”

Did the Chiefs make the right move going for it? Andy Reid says in hindsight he should’ve kicked a late field goal instead of going for it but at the time the Kansas City Chiefs coach thought it was the right move. The situation: With about 13 minutes left in the game and the Chiefs down 12-3, they faced a fourth and two from the Steelers four yard line. So, do you kick the field goal and make it a one-score game or do you go for the score? Andy Reid chose to go for the score. They appeared to complete a pass to TE Demetrius Harris, who had the ball ripped away from him. Incomplete....

Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill does not have concussion; Will he play in Oakland?

Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill does not have concussion; Will he play in Oakland?

One small bit of good news for the Chiefs: Tyreek Hill does not have a concussion. Tyreek was hit hard on a punt return that had the chance of sparking the Chiefs offense late in the game after he returned it to the 44-yard line. Unfortunately, he was knocked out of the game with that hit and the drive floundered and they lost the game to the Steelers, 19-13. Tyreek was hit hard enough that the suspicion was he had a concussion but it turns out that he does not have one, NBC’s Mike Florio reported before Sunday Night Football. The hope then is that he can play this Thursday against the...
