The Carolina Panthers handling of Cam Newton’s shoulder is irresponsible and short-sighted

The Carolina Panthers handling of Cam Newton’s shoulder is irresponsible and short-sighted

Watching our franchise quarterback trot out onto the field and throw a football armed only with a wet noodle was not something I enjoyed on Monday night, and it never should have happened. The Carolina Panthers managed to chase away victory yet again on Monday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints despite certainly the best defensive effort of the entire season. It was entirely a problem on offense, as running the football was difficult, the protection was bad, and turning the ball over on two prime scoring opportunities absolutely murdered this team’s chances. Beyond that though,...

Nick Foles is the best closer in the NFL, but Carson Wentz is the Eagles’ franchise quarterback

Nick Foles is the best closer in the NFL, but Carson Wentz is the Eagles’ franchise quarterback

Foles once again pitches some solid relief, but it is Wentz that is still the franchise guy. Nick Foles is the NFL’s Mariano Rivera. When you’re examining the Eagles quarterback situation, which admittedly got a lot stickier after the Birds’ 30-23, season-saving victory over the Rams in Los Angeles last night, pointing out the distinction between the two signal callers is important. The Eagles went into last night’s game as 13 1⁄2 point underdogs and yet, just as in all three playoff games he started last year, Foles led his underdog team to a hard-fought win over an elite team....

Jets lead the league in rushes to nowhere

Jets lead the league in rushes to nowhere

It is very difficult to quantify offensive line quality, but I do believe some statistics are illuminating. One of them is the number of runs a team has that go for either no gain or a loss. Since the runner is being tackled at or before the line of scrimmage, odds are any play with this result has been blocked poorly. Yes, occasionally a back will dance around too much in the backfield or hit the wrong hole. A great back might make something out of nothing. Still, I think this is a telling number. Offensive line quality has been a big issue for the Jets all season long. This stat tells the...

Chiefs’ Eric Berry felt ‘pretty good’ in return

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a disappointing 29-28 loss at home last Thursday night to the Los Angeles Chargers that put them in another setback. However, it was a game that welcomed the return of Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry for his first appearance since the season opener last year as he has been working […] The post Chiefs’ Eric Berry felt ‘pretty good’ in return appeared first on ClutchPoints.

Derek Carr now ‘fully fluent’ in Gruden’s offense, on pace for first 4000-yard season

Derek Carr now ‘fully fluent’ in Gruden’s offense, on pace for first 4000-yard season

A much more comfortable Derek Carr has been playing quarterback for the Oakland Raiders over the last month and that has manifested itself in Carr putting up some impressive numbers. After a slow start which included throwing a league-leading 8 interceptions in the first five game, Carr is now the NFL’s active interception-less streak leader with 292 consecutive passes. On top of that, he is on pace to surpass the 4,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. He has averaged 246.1 yards per game this season. Needing just 303 yards to reach the 4K milestone with two games left to...

2019 NFL Draft: 5 Guard prospects for the Detroit Lions

2019 NFL Draft: 5 Guard prospects for the Detroit Lions

The Lions may be looking to bolster their offensive line further if T.J. Lang retires this offseason, so we’re digging in the draft. The 2018 season looked promising for at least one unit on the Lions, and it’s one that has been a project for years. The offensive line came out looking like a much improved unit and it only got better as the season progressed. For a time, Kerryon Johnson was the hottest rookie back in the league and Matthew Stafford was the least sacked quarterback throwing the football. Then, it all crumbled. It can mainly be traced to one major factor, the repeated and...

Flashback: That time John Schneider was one of 2 GMs at Patrick Mahomes pro day

Flashback: That time John Schneider was one of 2 GMs at Patrick Mahomes pro day

If Russell Wilson never wins an MVP award, one of the likely culprits will be a lack of high-volume passing. Even if Wilson is tied in fourth place for touchdown passes with Philip Rivers and Drew Brees, Wilson gets far less awards consideration than Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck, Rivers, and Brees. I believe a part of that perception that downgrades Wilson in the eyes of the media and therefore the public is that he’s 22nd in pass attempts and if he’s not being asked to make as many plays, maybe it’s because he’s not as important. There are other factors we must consider too, and...
