Doug Whaley, Rex Ryan talk Buffalo Bills offensive line situation

The Buffalo Bills have not addressed their offensive line since February's signing of Richie Incognito, and that has left them considering all possibilities for their 2015 lineup. Earlier this week from the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona, Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley and head coach Rex Ryan spoke with Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News about the team's situation along the offensive line. If you haven't read it yet, you are encouraged to do so; there is plenty to chew on. Let's take a few minutes to flesh out some of the more intriguing parts of that article, shall we? "We’re...

Happy 81st Birthday, Gino Cappelletti

A Patriots legend turns 81 today. Friday, September 9th, 1960 marked the first time the newly formed Boston Patriots stepped onto a field to participate in a competitive football game. It was day one of the inaugural American Football League season and the team hosted the Denver Broncos in Nickerson Field. Among the players was a 26-year old, who would go on to become a legend: Gino Cappelletti. The Patriots would eventually lose the game 13-10 but Cappelletti scored the young franchise's first points, a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter. This field goal marked the first three points...

2015 NFL Draft: Who Is Your Top Choice?

Let's pretend for a moment that the New York Jets are drafting first overall. They have their pick of the litter; everyone is available. In that scenario, who would you want? What I'm essentially asking is, who do you think is the best player in the draft, for this team. For me, it would likely be Dante Fowler, Jr., who I believe would elevate this defense to legendary status. I think he'll be the next Khalil Mack. He can set the edge and he'll be a dynamic pass rusher. He's perfect for Todd Bowles' famous A gap blitzes. He has experience from a number of different positions, and he'll...

We continue to track the latest news and rumors around the Miami Dolphins free agency. The NFL owners meetings that began on Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona are now over and team owners and coaching staffs have returned home. With league business out of the way, at least for now, teams will get back to the task of filling out their rosters for the upcoming season. The busy period of free agency is now over but there is still a ton of NFL level talent on the street. A lot of veterans that still have something left in the tank will be doing their own little mini tours of the NFL looking for a...

New York Jets: What Is in a Contract?

The Jets spent big in free agency. They had plenty of money, and they used most of it. Sometimes contracts aren't what they seem in the NFL, however. In other sports, contracts are guaranteed. If you hear a basketball or baseball player has signed a contract for $60 million over 5, years, that player is getting $60 million over 5 years. That isn't so in the NFL. Contracts are not fully guaranteed. Guarantees are part of the negotiations. Depending on guarantees and how the deals are structured in base salaries vs. bonuses, two contracts that look identical in terms of years and money can be...

NFL takes Brady's advice to study rulebook, bans Patriots' ineligibles exploit

NFL studies rulebook and determines that ploy of lining up players with eligible numbers outside the tackle box and declared as ineligible is now explicitly disallowed. After the Ravens' final offensive drive (and Hail Mary) fell short, the Patriots held on to win 35-31 in the AFC Divisional round. Afterwards, Tom Brady, who is often described as the epitome of class and grace, said indignantly after the game, "...maybe they should study the rulebook", in response to a question about the tactic of lining up receivers outside the tackle box declared as ineligible. Brady's sensitivity to the...

Who's your receiver at No. 14?

Logic suggests the Miami Dolphins will use the No. 14 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft on a receiver. Advanced logic suggests the Dolphins, if they do select a receiver, will take one of the big-bodied, wide-catch-radius guys available (maybe DeVante Parker, maybe not). Which receiver would you take at No. 14? Logic suggests the Miami Dolphins will use the No. 14 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft on a receiver. Advanced logic suggests that, if the Dolphins do indeed select a receiver at that spot, they'll take one of the big-bodied, wide-catch-radius guys available. Common...

Competition Committee Votes to Change Ineligibility Rules, Among Others

Today, the owners voted in favor of changing some rules. Remember when the New England Patriots were down 14 for the second time in January's AFC Divisional Playoff Game against the Baltimore Ravens and the team dug deep into its playbook to come back to tie - and ultimately win - the game? Creative football at its best. At one point during the third quarter, and down 28-14, New England opted to use an unusual formation: the team fielded just four offensive linemen, while tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, who was eligible, lined up at the left tackle spot. Running back Shane Vereen reported...

The Patriots are So Much Better at the Draft than the Rest of the AFC East

The Patriots are head and shoulders ahead of their division when it comes to manipulating picks in the draft. Bill Belichick started his Patriots tenure with one red paperclip. He now owns the entire league. Well, at least when it comes to the draft and the AFC East, there's no competition. The draft's compensatory picks were announced and the Patriots picked up an extra third round pick for their loss of cornerback Aqib Talib, as well as a seventh rounder for linebacker Dane Fletcher. If New England were a standard team that picked last in every round, they would expect to have the least...

2015 Big Blue View Community Mock Draft: NY Jets take Kevin White, WR, WVU

The Jets continue to build an offense for Geno Smith The 6th pick of the 2015 Big Blue View Community Mock Draft is in. 6) New York Jets GM - nysoldier Pick - Kevin White, WR, West Virginia Explanation To me, this pick is more about what isn't here, then what is. With the top two QB's off the board and no LT worth the 6th pick in the draft I have to look else where. The best bet would be to trade this pick away and move into the 10-12 range and pick up DeVante Parker. However, we are not allowed to trade picks. The offense has been ignored in the draft for so long in the first round by...

Kellen Davis signs with Jets

Another former Detroit Lions player has signed with the New York Jets. For the second day in a row, the New York Jets have signed a former Detroit Lions player. On Tuesday, they added former Lions offensive tackle Corey Hilliard, and on Wednesday, they officially signed former Lions tight end Kellen Davis. Davis joins the Jets after two stints with the Lions last season. He was first added right before the Lions' trip to London because injuries piled up at tight end, and he was let go about a month later when Eric Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria finally got healthy. A couple of...
