NY Jets: Thinking About the State of the Receivers

NY Jets: Thinking About the State of the Receivers

The Jets made a fairly minor signing yesterday, bringing Quinton Patton aboard from the San Francisco 49ers. Patton is unlikely to have a major impact in the Jets in 2017 and beyond. The odds are pretty good that he will not even make the team out of training camp. His presence did get me thinking a bit about the back end of the receiver depth chart. Then a few discussions around here about whether the Jets should sign a receiver got me thinking about the position as a whole. On today’s podcast, we take a look at the receivers the Jets have on the team. There is discussion about what the...

Patriots have reportedly not yet discussed a deal with ex-Jets CB Darrelle Revis

Patriots have reportedly not yet discussed a deal with ex-Jets CB Darrelle Revis

Despite a recent report that has “sources” “convinced” Revis will return to New England, no talks have happened yet. Ever since the New York Jets announced that they would release cornerback Darrelle Revis at the start of free agency, rumors started to swirl about a possible reunion with the New England Patriots. Revis was with the Patriots during the 2014 season and won his lone championship ring as a member of the team. Following the Super Bowl, however, he left to join the Jets and the 5-year, $70.0 contract they offered. The combination of the deal, which would have resulted in...

2017 NFL Draft: Bill Belichick, Matt Patricia, Patriots scouting the marquee Pro Days

The Patriots are at Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Missouri, and 7 other schools. The New England Patriots are deep in the NFL Draft scouting process and we have ten more schools to add to the list, including some big schools, some small schools, some big prospects and some head scratchers. No stone is left unturned at this point in the year. We are keeping track of all the players that have interacted with the Patriots over the course of the draft process here, and have added names like N.C. State SS Josh Jones and Cincinnati LB Eric Wilson. But there are a few other pro days that don’t...

New England Patriots: Lack of Early Draft Picks Is Surprising

The New England Patriots generally do very well in the NFL Draft, but they don’t have a pick in the first two rounds as it currently stands. Will this change? How Adam Schefter broke the story of the Patriots signing CB Stephon Gilmore

How Adam Schefter broke the story of the Patriots signing CB Stephon Gilmore

This is an awesome look at NFL free agency. CB Stephon Gilmore was the 9th biggest free agent name for ESPN’s Adam Schefter, but not from a talent perspective. Schefter wanted to get the biggest stories, which put QB Tony Romo as the 1st player on his list despite still being a member of the Dallas Cowboys. LB Dont’a Hightower was 7th on the list of 50 names. We know this because MMQB followed Schefter on the first day of free agency in a must-read look at the world of sports reporting. We also get a look at how the Patriots deal with Gilmore was a surprise to even Schefter on the first...

Dont'a Hightower took less money to return to the Patriots

According to CBS football writer Jason La Canfora, the Pittsburgh Steelers were never really in the running for New England Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower. La Canfora is reporting that even though the Steelers were offering more money, Hightower was happier going back to New England for a little less. The Steelers would have paid him over $9 million per year to join them, but, despite media reports purporting Hightower could make well over $10 million a season in New England, he ended up taking a base deal worth about $8.7 million per season with the Patriots. The dude never wanted...

Buffalo Bills aren't planning pre-draft luncheon with GM Doug Whaley, scouts

What could this mean? There are a few distinct possibilities. The Buffalo Bills pre-draft luncheon, an annual tradition when the team’s GM and select scouting-department members speak to the media, will not include Doug Whaley and his scouts this year. This news was reported by WGR 550’s Sal Capaccio. According to Capaccio, Buffalo’s head coach Sean McDermott will answer (likely pre-draft) questions on April 20. Per John Wawrow of the Associated Press, who’s covered the Bills for 17 years, no head coach has ever handled the pre-draft luncheon alone... until now. Laying out all...

“Numerous” NFL executives are “convinced” CB Darrelle Revis returns to New England Patriots

“Numerous” NFL executives are “convinced” CB Darrelle Revis returns to New England Patriots

The Patriots could have their solution if CB Malcolm Butler is traded. The New England Patriots would like to find a way to keep CB Malcolm Butler on a long-term deal, but if extension talks fall through and the New Orleans Saints offer a big enough trade package to acquire Butler, then head coach Bill Belichick the Patriots will be left with a possible hole on the roster. Newcomer Stephon Gilmore is the top cornerback on the roster, and Eric Rowe, Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones, and Justin Coleman would fill out the depth chart. Losing Butler puts a dent in the depth chart, but league...

PFF: Patriots WR Brandin Cooks laps the competition while running complex routes

No receiver is more efficient at routes with multiple changes in direction than Brandin Cooks. The New England Patriots acquired WR Brandin Cooks and are expected to jam him into the offense, adding an extremely young, extremely athletic, and extremely productive target into an already incredible offense. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has the fun job of finding a role for Cooks in an offense with the best deep ball receiver in the league in WR Chris Hogan, the best hitch and comeback receiver in the league in WR Julian Edelman, the best tight end in the league in TE Rob Gronkowski,...
