On Pro Football: Texans look for alternate at corner

Houston Chronicle — Now that we know free-agent cornerback Leigh Bodden has returned to New England, where he wanted to be all along, it’s pretty obvious what happened. Teams often tell a player and his agent to check around the league to see what the best offer they can get and then let them know.

Jaguars can't resist urge to splurge on Aaron Kampman

Florida Times-Union — Well, so much for the Jaguars being flea-market shoppers in NFL free agency. Anybody who thought this franchise would only try to win on the cheap, or not make any moves to excite the fan base, needs to rethink that misguided logic.read more

For the Jaguars, signing Aaron Kampman was a 'calculated risk worth taking'

Florida Times-Union — Jaguars general manager Gene Smith said the decision to sign defensive end Aaron Kampman of Green Bay, who is 30 and is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament, was a “calculated risk worth taking.”Kampman, who agreed to a four-year, $26 million contract Sunday with $11 million guaranteed, could provide a much needed boost to the team’s pass rush this fall, but Smith said the decision to sign Kampman will not change his overall philosophy of building the team through the draft.read more

  • Tackling the Rhodes interview The Jets Stream | New York Daily News We've probably spent too much time on this already, but ... There are two comments I'd like to make regarding Kerry Rhodes' radio interview yesterday: 1. It was incredibly selfish of him to criticize the coaches for reducing his leadership role and not featuring him in the defense. Understandably, he was hurt by having to yield play-calling duties to fellow safety Jim Leonhard, but look at the facts: The defense finished NO. 1 IN THE LEAGUE. Obviously, the coaches knew what they were doing. If the Jets had finished somewhere in the middle of the pack, then, yes, he'd have every right to be ups...

But credit head coach Ken Whisenhunt. He isn't making anything official. He is going to have the still-young and still-unproven NFL quarterback show that he deserves to start. Whisenhunt said in a Tuesday radio interview that the Cardinals would sign a quarterback to compete with Leinart for the starting spot. Whisenhunt said he has a "great deal" of confidence in Leinart. But he said he won't just hand the job over to Leinart until he "goes to three Pro Bowls" and the Super Bo...
  • Mike Martz: We have two starting running backs in Chicago FFToolbox.com When the Chicago Bears signed Chester Taylor last week, we knew it would mean a decrease in Matt Forte's fantasy value. But from the words of offensive coordinator Mike Martz, the dreaded running back-by-committee situation could be upcoming in the Windy City. Martz intends to utilize both Taylor and Forte at running back and insists that it doesn't matter which player is officially listed on the depth chart with the No. 1 offense. "We'have two starters," Martz said according to the team's official Web site. "That's how we look at it. We're fortunate to have two starters. As you look around th...
  • Thomas Jones signs with Chiefs FFToolbox.com Running back Thomas Jones was a 1,400-yard rusher for the Jets last year, but the team didn't want to pay nearly $6 million for him in 2010 and wanted to get younger in their backfield. So the Jets cut Jones. Now Jones will get a chance to backup one of the better young rushers in the league. Jones signed a two-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, where is expected to be a change-of-pace runner behind Jamaal Charles. Jones will get $3 million in 2010 and $2 million in 2011. • Jim Sorgi to backup another Manning FFToolbox.com Quarterback Jim Sorgi has become sort of a cult figure in the NFL for backing up a guy who has never missed an NFL game in his 12 seasons, Peyton Manning. Now Sorgi will do the same for his brother Eli, who has started 87 consecutive games. Sorgi signed a one-year deal to join the New York Giants on Monday. This occurs two days after the Giants lost their main 2009 backup, David Carr, to the San Francisco 49ers. Sorgi has played in 14 games in six seasons with the Colts. He has thrown six touchdowns and one interception in that time. The 29-year-old Sorgi went on injured reserve last December...
