Cardinals trade Wells, cut two LBs

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — The Cardinals traded starting right guard Reggie Wells to the Eagles Friday for an undisclosed draft pick. ESPN.com reported it will be a sixth-round pick. Wells played seven seasons for the Cardinals after being taken by the team in the sixth round in the 2003 draft. From South Park, Pa., Wells played at Clarion in Pennsylvania, so he will be close to home with the Eagles. The Cardinals had a glut of guards after the acquisition of Alan Faneca and Rex Hadnot in free agency. Wells played in 104 games, starting 90 of them. He moved from left guard to right this off-season, ...read the rest of ...

Wrapping up the preseason

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Arizona Cardinals update: A few quick thoughts late Thursday night: -- Rookie quarterback Max Hall made a strong push to be considered for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Derek Anderson. It's pragmatic to temper praise of Hall with the realities of the preseason: the defenses don't have much in their game plans, and he played against backups. Still, his mobility, intelligence and toughness are going to take him a long way. He moves around well in the pocket and throws accurately on the run. Most importantly, not much flusters him.  And he thinks he belongs in the NFL. I asked him after ....

One man's guess at the 53

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Arizona Republic: One of the biggest misconceptions floated this time of year is that NFL teams trim their roster to the "final 53." There is nothing final about it. Teams have to trim from 75 to 53, but they adjust that 53 throughout the next few weeks, adding players from other teams and cutting some who were celebrating the day before. The Cardinals are expected to announce most of their cuts on Friday, and they will spend the weekend perusing the list of players released by other teams. Here's my guess how the roster will look at 53 at least to begin with. Most ...read the r...

A little something for everyone

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Arizona Cardinals update: The process that led to a four-year contract extension for defensive lineman Darnell Dockett was intriguing for a multitude of reasons. The best agreements provide benefits for all parties, and that was the case with Dockett. Here's how I evaluate the benefits: The Cardinals -- The first is obvious. They lock up one of their best young players in his prime, at age 29. Almost as important, the team stuck to its new policy of not extending deals that have more than two years remaining. Dockett fumed and fussed in 2008 and 2009 because the team wouldn't talk about a ...r...

  • Three things we learned Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times 1. Charlie Whitehurst throws a heck of a deep ball.He might get a running back killed in the flat with the way he leads him square into an oncoming safety, but send a receiver sprinting down the sideline and Whitehurst will put the ball right there on him. He completed three passes of more than 30 yards Thursday in Oakland, all to different receivers. Just as important, he avoided the interceptions that had coaches clenching their teeth in the previous three exhibition games. Whitehurst's final exhibition game was a bookend performance that was every bit as good as his first game.2. The runnin...

  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the point of no return Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com was one of the first people to ask the question. Is there any chance the Seahawks are going to cut T.J. Houshmandzadeh, he wondered during Seattle's first exhibition game? The numbers didn't seem to point in that direction. Not the 79 passes Houshmandzadeh caught last season, not the 373 receptions over the previous four years and certainly not the $7 million Seattle was contractually obligated to pay him even if cut him.The second time the topic came up was during a radio-show appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle when Mike Salk pointed out that just looking at t...
