Somers: Matt Leinart no sure thing as Arizona Cardinals QB

Arizona Republic — He's is the only one on the roster. So we handicap the Cardinals' depth chart at QB.

Leinart no shoo-in as Cards' starting QB

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — NFL quarterbacks seeking work should find the Cardinals an attractive potential employer, partly because coach Ken Whisenhunt treats the position much like any other. Kurt Warner announced his retirement more than a month ago, yet Whisenhunt has yet to officially name Matt Leinart the starter, even though he's the only quarterback on the roster. OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1') Whisenhunt has professed confidence in Leinart at every opportunity but also joked that he doesn't have many alternatives. After three years under Whisenhunt, Leinart probably expects nothing more. Some coaches coddle quarterbac...

The star of the combine

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Several times last season prominent Cardinals players asked me if the team was making any progress in re-signing strength and conditioning coach John Lott. The Cardinals signed him to a new contract this off-season, and this video feature shows you why.  Lott talks about his role at the combine, and it's not much different than what he does as a Cardinals coach. He probably has more contact with the team's young players than any other coach, and he talks to them far more about what it takes to make it in the NFL than he does about bench pressing and squats. Plus, you ...read the rest...

Steak salads for everyone

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Former Steelers/Dolphins outside linebacker Joey Porter is due to arrive in Arizona tonight and spend the evening and part of Thursday visiting the Cardinals, said his agent, Jeff Sperbeck. This is Porter's first free agent visit, and he'll be meeting an old teammate,  inside linebacker Larry Foote, here. Foote, who played for the Lions last year. Clark Haggans, also a former Steeler, started all of last season for the Cardinals. Not sure where the group will be dining but maybe they'll find a restaurant with some Pittsburgh specialities. Throw in inside linebacker Gerald Hayes, who playe...

Becht agrees to terms, Ware still negotiating

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Tight end Anthony Becht agreed to a one-year deal with the Cardinals, and contrary to reports, free safety Matt Ware continues to negotiate with the club. Becht, who will be in his 11th-season, will receive a $50,000 signing bonus and a salary of $900,000. Becht was used mostly as a blocker last season and played a key role in the club's improved run game. In free agency, he had drawn interest from the Raiders and 49ers. Offensive lineman Rex Hadnot and quarterback Charlie Whitehurst are visiting today. As of yesterday evening, a visit by outside linebacker Joey Porter on Thursday had not been...

Ware deal not done yet

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — The agent for free safety Matt Ware's tonight denied an NFL.com story that Ware and the Cardinals had reached agreement on a multi-year contract. Audie Attar said the two sides were "still engaged in positive negotiations."   ...read the rest of this post

A busy week

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic —  It appears the Cardinals are going to have free agents visit all week. They had two in today, defensive end Nick Eason from the Steelers and Chiefs guard/tackle Wade Smith. Both left town without offers, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Cardinals tried quickly to get something done with Eason. End is his primary position but he also has some experience at nose tackle. He reportedly has an offer on the table from the Steelers, so the Cardinals are going to have to surpass that to get him to move West. It's been widely reported that outside linebacker Joey Porter is ...read the rest of t...
