The Splash Zone 10/20/17: Matt Burke Proving He Was The Right Man For The Job

The Splash Zone 10/20/17: Matt Burke Proving He Was The Right Man For The Job

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours. After the departure of Vance Joseph, Adam Gase already had his guy for the vacant defensive coordinator position. When Gase hired Joseph and Matt Burke, he knew Burke would take over the defense when Joseph left town. And so far, Burke’s defense has been impressive, compared to last season. In Joseph’s defense, the defense was really banged up last year. The most impressive stat for this defense is that they’re 4th against...

Phinsider Week 7 Game Previews and Predictions

Phinsider Week 7 Game Previews and Predictions

Welcome to another edition of Justin Hier’s weekly game previews and predictions! As has been the case this NFL season, fans from all over were treated to a wide array of upsets on Sunday, continuing one of the wildest first halves of an NFL season in recent memory. The most shocking of those upsets? The Miami Dolphins’ 20-0 second half run against the Atlanta Falcons that erased a 17 point halftime deficit. This week, those same up-and-down Dolphins face a New York Jets team that absolutely spanked them up in the Meadowlands just a few weeks ago, but this time, they play at Hard Rock...

Miami Dolphins: Why being not normal is more than okay (and quite honestly a bit more fun to watch)

Miami Dolphins: Why being not normal is more than okay (and quite honestly a bit more fun to watch)

Say what you want about the Dolphins, but defying the norm has become their bread and butter. Looking at all that has happened to the Miami Dolphins so far this season is starting to have opposing fans perplexed. In fact, it is confusing many people from odds-makers, to fans, coaches, and analysts. But this is a team that has bought into the mindset of the man hired to right the ship, and to say that head coach Adam Gase is a bit of an oddity himself is an understatement. After years of coaching searches, player searches, roster additions and subtractions, Miami has finally seemed to have...

ESPN: Jay Cutler ‘one QB you would not want as teammate’

ESPN: Jay Cutler ‘one QB you would not want as teammate’

ESPN reporters recently polled 155 players about the quarterback position, asking questions like “Which QB talks the most trash?” and “Which QB do you most want to sack?” While Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler did not show up in the results for either of those questions, he can be found in the responses for two of the other questions - and not questions for which you want to be the response. There were 64 total responses (either players did not answer the question, or ESPN pulled out the answers that were single votes for a quarterback) to the question “Who is the one QB you...

What We Learned: Falcons vs. Dolphins

What We Learned: Falcons vs. Dolphins

Fact: Ricardo Allen once took a nap on a bed of hot coals It happened once again. A fast Falcons start on both sides of the ball as well as special teams. A halftime lead that did not necessarily spell "comfort," but was pleasing at the very least. Once the wheels fell off in the beginning of the second half against the Miami Dolphins this past Sunday, the wagon went downhill at a terrifying speed, smacked a wall, caught ablaze, and burned down a village by the time the clock hit triple zero. A 17-0 halftime lead dreadfully turned into a 20-17 win for the Dolphins, leaving the Falcons at...

The Splash Zone 10/19/17: Gase Wants Pass Catchers To Practice More

The Splash Zone 10/19/17: Gase Wants Pass Catchers To Practice More

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours. The Dolphins pass catchers this season seem to be allergic to catching the football. In the pass two weeks, there have been 10 dropped passes. That’s a scary number as that’s five drops per week. The dropped passes must come to and end and the only way to fix those drops is to hit the jug machines and get more reps. You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day's round-up below. CATCH THIS! Adam Gase tells...

Phinsider Week 7 Fantasy Football Rankings

Phinsider Week 7 Fantasy Football Rankings

It’s time for another run of Justin Hier’s weekly fantasy football rankings! Week 7 was chalk full of surprises in both real life and the fantasy football world, something that has become a true trend thus far this NFL season. One such surprise was the shocking turnaround for the Miami Dolphins during the second half of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, one that saw Jay Ajayi finally return the type of production that is expected from a running back that many fantasy owners took in the first or second round drafts. This week, Ajayi gets a New York Jets team that bottled him...

What offseason move for the Dolphins would you have changed?

What offseason move for the Dolphins would you have changed?

The Miami Dolphins have started the 2017 regular season on a roller coaster, winning their first game, then dropping the next two while scoring a combined six points total, before coming away with two more wins - all while trying to find a rhythm for the offense. With the team sitting at 3-2 on the season, we are starting to get an idea of what the team is, and where they need to address things for next year. But, what about this year? Now that the season has begun to play out, what would the Dolphins do today if they could go back and change one move they made in the offseason? Would it...

Miami Dolphins Rookie Report for Week Six

Miami Dolphins Rookie Report for Week Six

Taking on the defending NFC Champion Falcons in Atlanta this past Sunday, let’s take a look and see how the Miami Dolphins rookies fared in this contest. Entering Sunday’s game as an overwhelming underdog, the Miami Dolphins may have finally given their fans a reason to smile. Trailing 17-0 at one point, the Dolphins put in an extremely impressive second half performance to comeback and defeat the defending NFC Champion Falcons by a score of 20-17. While the whole team put in a great performance on Sunday to comeback and defeat Atlanta, the rookies on this squad also did their best to...

Is this Dolphins defense the real deal?

Is this Dolphins defense the real deal?

The Falcons were a good barometer. The defense has been playing well all season, so far. Holding Phillip Rivers and Co. to 17 points, and Brees’ Saints to 20 points. The reigning NFL MVP and defending NFC champs were supposed to walk all over Miami. Some TV pundits did not even give guesses at the score because they didn’t want to “embarrass” the Dolphins. Miami was 12 point underdogs. They won. The defense pitched a second half shutout and held Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and the rest of the Dirty Birds to just 17 total points. There is a lot to be excited about with this defense....

What Happened Here? Week 6, Atlanta Falcons Edition

What Happened Here? Week 6, Atlanta Falcons Edition

Film doesn’t lie, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a rich discussion to be had. Last week, I introduced a new series to the Phinsider called “What Happened Here?” We look at game tape as a Dolphins family - and instead of just blindly accepting someone else’s conclusions, we form our own. I’ll set the context of the play and it’ll be up to you to tell us what’s going on during the play. The 1st edition of “What Happened Here?” involved a play that didn’t work, and there were an array of responses and theories as to why it wasn’t executed properly (the vote was...

The Splash Zone 10/18/17: Keep Feeding Jay Ajayi

The Splash Zone 10/18/17: Keep Feeding Jay Ajayi

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours. We saw it on Sunday, when the team can get Jay Ajayi going, good things will happen. As the game wore on, Ajayi kept running hard and is one of those backs that gets stronger as the game goes on. With Ajayi able to run well, it can open up the passing attack with some great play action plays. If the Dolphins can stick with the running game, they can win any game with the way this defense has been playing lately. You can check...

Can Dolphins avenge Week 3 loss to Jets?

Can Dolphins avenge Week 3 loss to Jets?

The Miami Dolphins lost to the New York Jets in Week 3. They get a second-shot this week. The Miami Dolphins rolled into Week 3 coming off a win over the Los Angeles Chargers and ready to continue their winning ways against the “worst team in the league” in the New York Jets. Things were looking up for the Dolphins as they worked to find their rhythm behind quarterback Jay Cutler and an offense that seemed like they needed a little more time to hit their full stride, but the potential was there. It then took the Dolphins 59:59 to find any sort of points, coming away with a touchdown...

NFL Power Rankings Week 7: Dolphins start to rebound

NFL Power Rankings Week 7: Dolphins start to rebound

As you may have noticed, things have been a little off here on The Phinsider recently. Basically, work got in the way of me being able to focus on the site, and I apologize for that. One big example of things missing from the site was last week’s NFL Power Rankings rundown for the Miami Dolphins. We pick it back up today for Week 7. The Dolphins have been plummeting down the power rankings from all over the internet with their 2-2 start to the season and a league-worst 10.3 points per game average through their first four games. After this past weekend’s come-back win over the Atlanta...

Jay Ajayi getting back on track? The Dolphins better hope so.

Jay Ajayi getting back on track? The Dolphins better hope so.

The Miami Dolphins seem to have finally found their offensive identity with a 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Through the team’s first four games, they had struggled to get the offense into any sort of rhythm, scoring just 10.3 points per game through that period. While the offense still struggled on Sunday, they nearly doubled that average, and discovered the identity for the team that every one should have already known was there: Jay Ajayi. With 26 carries for 130 yards, Ajayi looked like the running back he is supposed to be, breaking off chunks of yards and breaking...

The Splash Zone 10/17/17: Is This The Dolphins Turning Point?

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours. Similar to last season, the Dolphins were supposed to lose this game. The Dolphins ended up beating the Falcons, while last season they beat the Steelers. After last years game, the Dolphins won 9 of their next 10 games and wound up with a wildcard spot. We saw the Dolphins offense have life against the Falcons and the defense played some great ball. Maybe this is the turning point for the 2017 season. You can check out that...

Pro Football Focus: Jay Ajayi Dominates in Dolphins' Heroic Comeback

Pro Football Focus: Jay Ajayi Dominates in Dolphins' Heroic Comeback

Jay Ajayi carried the Miami Dolphins' offense to a shocking victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Miami Dolphins teetered on the edge of another disappointing outing before rallying in the second half to overcome a 17-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons. Jay Cutler and the passing game once again had trouble carrying the offense, but Jay Ajayi's 130 yards on the ground proved to be enough to tote the Dolphins to victory. After failing to reach 100 yards rushing for three consecutive weeks, Ajayi's strong performance captured the attention of Pro Football Focus. The former Boise...

The Splash Zone 10/16/17: Dolphins Stun The Falcons

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours. I’m not going to lie. I woke up yesterday morning expecting the Dolphins to get dominated by the Falcons. After one half of play, it looked grim. But as they say: “Any given Sunday”. The Dolphins found a way to pull of a great comeback. Jay Cutler looked sharp in the second half and Jay Ajayi was running angry. Thanks to some great play from the defense the Dolphins closed out the game with a Reshad Jones interception....
