Lions-Saints report card: Time to admit it, this team is bad

Lions-Saints report card: Time to admit it, this team is bad

The same problems keep popping up. Maybe it’s time to change our expectations. Before I get into this week’s grades for the Detroit Lions’ game against the New Orleans Saints, we need to talk. The Lions have been completely outmatched in three of their four last games. A flurry of late-game scores in all three games have helped distract some—myself included—to the real problems with this team. There’s no way around it. Over the past four games, this Detroit Lions team has been bad. Not just 1-3 record bad, but should-have-been-blown-out bad. The Saints, Panthers and Falcons...

Lions-Saints player of the game: Who gets the game ball?

Lions-Saints player of the game: Who gets the game ball?

Just a handful of players had a good game against the Saints. Let’s honor one of them. For the second straight week, the Detroit Lions dropped an egg and looked just plain awful against good competition. As far as a team effort, it was a flat, uninspiring performance. But there were a few good individual performances against the New Orleans Saints worth praising, so let’s hand out a game ball like we always do. Here are the Game Ball standings through five games: Darius Slay - 4Matthew Stafford - 4Glover Quin - 3Ezekiel Ansah - 3Anthony Zettel - 3Jarrad Davis - 3Darren Fells - 2Jamal...

Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints stock report

Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints stock report

In a roller coaster of a game, the Lions had plenty of ups and downs so we’re going to look at who’s up and who’s down now. The Detroit Lions were underdogs coming into the Saints game, but very few could have predicted just how incredible this game would turn out to be. The Saints were burying the Lions until a Jamal Agnew return touchdown put them right back into it. The Lions would claw their way back to within one score of the Saints in their home, but the injuries on the offensive line would eventually catch up to the wounded Lions and they would fall back to lose by two scores....

Lions-Saints final score: Detroit’s wild comeback falls short, 52-38

Lions-Saints final score: Detroit’s wild comeback falls short, 52-38

That was technically a football game, I’m told. That’s not exactly the way the Detroit Lions wanted to head into the bye week. Detroit was dominated from front to back against the New Orleans Saints, eventually losing 45-17. Let’s get to the recap. First half The game got off to a suboptimal start after a Saints punt pinned the Lions inside their own 2-yard line. After gaining just one yard on their first two plays, Matthew Stafford dropped back, couldn’t find anyone open and was promptly sacked in the end zone. To make matters worse, he fumbled the ball and it was immediately...

Week 5 NFL picks: Staff predictions for Lions-Saints

Our staff tries to rebound after whiffing last week. Last week, the Pride of Detroit staff took a beating. All 10 staffers picked the Detroit Lions to defeat the Carolina Panthers, and all 10 were wrong. But it doesn’t look like any of them are deterred by the Lions’ Week 5 performance. A large majority of our staff is still picking the Lions to defeat the New Orleans Saints on the road this week. Take a look: Chris Perfett (4-1): 81-73 LionsAlex Reno (4-1): 30-23 SaintsMike Payton (3-2): 21-17 LionsJustin Simon (3-2): 20-19 LionsKent Lee Platte (3-2): 47-35 LionsRyan Mathews (3-2):...

How to watch Lions-Saints: Game time, TV schedule, online streaming, announcers, more

Here’s all of the relevant information for Sunday’s matchup between the Lions and Saints. The Detroit Lions are hoping they can head into their bye week with some positivity after losing their Week 5 matchup with the Carolina Panthers. In order to do that, they’ll have to take on the New Orleans Saints, a team they’ve defeated three years in a row and twice on their home turf. The Saints are currently riding a two-game winning streak and are well-rested after their early bye last week. The Saints have an opportunity to gain ground in the NFC South after the Panthers lost to the...

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints preview: On Paper

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints preview: On Paper

Can the Lions beat the Saints for the fourth straight year? For the third time already this season the Detroit Lions will face an NFC South opponent this Sunday. The first two didn’t go so well ,but the Lions are hoping to turn things around as they are set to face the 2-2 New Orleans Saints, a team they have now beaten three years in a row. But the tides could be turning. The Saints are riding a two-game winning streak and are coming off a full week of rest after an early bye. They’re extremely healthy going into Week 6 and, as a result, are significant favorites in this game...

NFL Week 6 odds: Saints now favored by 5.5 over Lions, may continue to rise

NFL Week 6 odds: Saints now favored by 5.5 over Lions, may continue to rise

Early money is heavily on the Saints, and the betting line is only growing. The Detroit Lions opened as 3-point underdogs to the New Orleans Saints, a seemingly fair line for a 3-2 team on the road against a 2-2 team. But since the game has opened, the line has shifted drastically. The general consensus has the Saints now favored by 4.5 points, but some have that line as high as 5.5. A shift in a betting line like that is usually a sign that a majority of early bettors are placing money on one side. In other words, when the Lions were just 3-point underdogs, a huge majority of gamblers...

New Orleans Saints scouting report: Can the Lions’ exploit the Saints’ weak defense?

New Orleans Saints scouting report: Can the Lions’ exploit the Saints’ weak defense?

New Orleans’ defense is better, but still extremely vulnerable. The Detroit Lions are heading down to New Orleans for the third year in a row to face a 2-2 Saints team. Since the Saints defeated the Lions in the playoffs of the 2011 season, Detroit has won three straight in the series. New Orleans comes into the game healthy off their bye week, but their identity is still unknown. After looking like one of the worst teams in the NFL through two weeks, the Saints are now riding a two-game winning streak. In fact, their last win was their first shutout since 2012. Considering where this...

10 things I think I know about Week 6: Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints

10 things I think I know about Week 6: Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints

10 quick thoughts heading into Week 6. The Detroit Lions have once again found themselves in loss column. Just in time to travel to the New Orleans Saints, who are coming off their bye week. Neither team has played consistently yet this season, but the Saints enter Sunday’s game after a 20-0 thumping over the hapless Miami Dolphins. This is the the third time the Lions face off against an NFC South opponent. Hopefully this matchup will end differently than the first two. Here are 10 things I think I know heading into Week 6 against the Saints: 1. I think the Lions offensive line is...

Wednesday open thread: Is the Saints game a must-win for the Detroit Lions?

Wednesday open thread: Is the Saints game a must-win for the Detroit Lions?

Is it too early in the season for a must-win game? The Detroit Lions were knocked from their pedestal by the Carolina Panthers in Week 5. Gone are the days when the Lions shared a piece of the NFC North lead. Detroit’s impressive 3-1 record against the NFC is now just a pedestrian 3-2. They are still clinging to playoff spot, but just barely. With the bye week just five days away, the Lions have one more big game before their week of rest. The Lions head south to play the 2-2 New Orleans Saints, Detroit’s sixth consecutive in-conference game. A win puts them at a healthy 4-2 record...

New Orleans Saints vs. Miami Dolphins: Open Thread

New Orleans Saints vs. Miami Dolphins: Open Thread

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are traveling to London, England to take on the Miami Dolphins and Jay Cutler. Last week’s London game was a one-sided beating of the Ravens by the Jaguars. This game could easily go the same way with the Saints offense facing a Miami defense that managed to get taken apart by the lowly Jets last week. It will be interesting to see if the Saints continue to use their three-headed running back by committee despite Adrian Peterson being badly outplayed by Mark Ingram and rookie Alvin Kamara. On the Miami side of things, we will have to watch to see if...

Saints-Dolphins, Week 4 in London: Game time, TV schedule, more

It’s another week of breakfast football at Wembley Stadium. Week 4 is officially underway, and Sunday’s full slate of games gets an eaaaaarly start for the second straight week. The New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins kick off at 6:30 a.m. PT live from London at Wembley Stadium. The game will broadcast on FOX, and you can get a live stream at FOX Sports Go. The Dolphins are a 3.5-point favorite, and I decided to lay the points. It’s not ideal, but I have virtually no interest in picking the Saints outside of the Superdome. They’re not always bad on the road, but they are woefully...

New Orleans Saints @ Miami Dolphins Live Thread & Game Information

New Orleans Saints @ Miami Dolphins Live Thread & Game Information

Your Miami Dolphins travel to take on the New Orleans Saints this week in what will serve as one of Miami’s eight “home” games. Your Dolphins come into the week limping a bit after a drubbing at the hands of the New York Jets last Sunday. The Saints started the season slowly, dropping their first two before rebounding last week beating the Carolina Panthers by a score of 34-14. Despite the Saints early struggles this season they should give the Dolphins all the can handle. Drew Brees, despite the record, has started the season off hot having thrown for 867 yards, 6 touchdowns, and...
