World Series open thread

World Series open thread

The San Francisco 49ers are on their bye week, and for those of you who are San Francisco Giants fans, it is coming at the absolutely perfect time. The Giants face off against the Kansas City Royals in the World Series, and no matter how it plays out, it will be done before the 49ers next game. While I am not a Giants fan, I figured some of you would enjoy having a place to talk about the game. One option is to head over to McCovey Chronicles. However, if you feel like sticking around here, I'll have this thread in the cover of the front page through the end of the World Series. During...

Seahawks sign Brett Brackett: Who is the Seahawks' new tight end?

The former Penn State captain could end up being a name to know. Hey all, it's been a while. For those of you who don't remember me (aka everyone), I'm an assistant editor over at Black Shoe Diaries, the SB Nation Penn State blog. Aside from being a PSU grad and fan, I am also a lifelong Seahawks and Mariners fan due to family connections to Washington (the good Washington, not the one I now live near). But I'm not here to tell you about me, I'm here to tell you about Brett Brackett. Watching Penn State football over the past five years has allowed me to watch some fantastic tight ends...

Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid are back together this Sunday

Donovan McNabb is set to call the Rams-Chiefs game on FOX where Andy Reid is coaching. One of the most successful and prolific quarterback-head coach combinations in Philadelphia Eagles franchise history is reuniting this Sunday. Sort of. It turns out that Eagles all-time passing leader Donovan McNabb, who is now a sports analyst at Fox Sports 1, will be on the call as part of the Fox broadcast team during this week's St. Louis Rams-Kansas City Chiefs game. Former Eagles head coach Andy Reid, who earned a record of 130-93-1 during his tenure with Philadelphia, is now obviously the man in...
Prediction time for the second half of the 49ers schedule

Prediction time for the second half of the 49ers schedule

The San Francisco 49ers have nine games to play following their bye. We take a look at how that might shake out with game-by-game predictions. The San Francisco 49ers head into their bye week having completed just about half their schedule. They have played seven games, and have nine remaining before the playoffs hopefully arrive for them. I realize technically this is not the halfway point of the season, but with the 49ers heading into their bye, I figured I would treat it as sufficiently halfway. As such, I wanted to do some mid-season assessments. I'll have a look at each positional unit...

Seahawks claim TE Brett Brackett off waivers from Titans, waive Rashaun Allen

Seahawks claim TE Brett Brackett off waivers from Titans, waive Rashaun Allen

The Seahawks have claimed TE Brett Brackett off of waivers from the Titans, looking to bolster their depth a little bit at the position, with Luke Willson and Zach Miller out due to injury. Brackett was draft-eligible in 2011 out of Penn State and has bounced around to the Eagles, Jags, and Titans, and has been up and down on practice squads and active rosters in his four seasons. Brackett's more of a "move" tight end at 6'6, 248 (or, that's what he was at at his pro day in 2011), and certainly has the athletic traits the Seahawks' FO seems to like. It's been a few years, but Brackett was...

Turner out for Sunday, Bell and Silatolu could be in

It looks like the Panthers might get Bell and Silatolu back from injury, but the talented rookie will be inactive. According to this article from Panthers.com, it appears Byron Bell and Amini Silatolu are progressing well and should be back from their respective injuries to play the Seahawks. While the two aren't world beaters, it's a case of being better than their backups. The biggest relief is getting Byron Bell back, as David Foucalt proved that he should have been left to stick around on the practice squad for the year, as he currently has no place on the 53 man roster. The potential...

Cowboys Getting Influx Of Help On Defensive Line Over Next Month

Cowboys Getting Influx Of Help On Defensive Line Over Next Month

The Cowboys are getting a few bodies along the defensive line. The Dallas Cowboys defensive line has been something of an enigma this year. A rotation of guys, there is no one star, but collectively they have been getting the job done. They don't get many sacks, only four so far on the year. Yet, as OCC showed earlier today, they are doing enough in getting pressure on quarterbacks to make a difference. They have been giving up some running yards, but they tighten up when the opposing offense gets near the points. All in all, they have been a success, but they surely would like to get some...

Minnesota Vikings Invade Raymond James Stadium- Join The Hoard!

I hate the Bucs soooo, so so so much. If you are traveling to the Tampa Bay area for the Bucs game, or if perhaps you are a Vikings fan who already lives nearby, the Daily Norseman will be hosting both a tailgate and post-game party (either celebrating our victory or drowning our sorrows, however this works out). If you are attending the game, coordinating seats or whatnot is obviously a bit of a moot point now- of course I'm sure there are still some seats available and if some of you want to do that, knock yourselves out. I've personally got my seat and I ain't movin'. (And it's a good...

Redskins Sign OLB Everette Brown; Place Orakpo on IR

The Redskins have officially placed OLB Brian Orakpo on IR, and signed Everette Brown for OLB depth The reports came yesterday that Brian Orakpo's MRI had revealed a torn pectoral muscle, the 3rd in his NFL career.  It was also reported yesterday that Orakpo would need surgery which would land him on Injured Reserve, and end his season and possibly his time with the Redskins.  Now the team has made it official, placing Orakpo on IR, and signing veteran OLB Everette Brown to fill the open roster spot and provide depth at OLB and special teams. Brown was signed by the Redskins...

BGN Radio is teaming up with Tony Bruno and Crossing Broad

Welcome to the Liberty Broadcast Co. I'm interrupting our regularly scheduled Philadelphia Eagles coverage here at Bleeding Green Nation to bring you a bit of site news. The Bleeding Green Nation podcast, BGN Radio, is now officially one year old. It's been a great year and here's looking forward to many to come. To give you an idea of the podcast's growth in just one year, the first episode recorded 254 listens. The most recent episode (#57) is currently near 5,800 listens. That's amazing. In even more important news, however, we have a special announcement to make. I'll turn it over to...

49ers vs. Broncos: Looking at San Francisco's sacks allowed [GIFs]

The 49ers gave up a lot of sacks. Joe Staley got beat a bunch. Alex Boone didn't block anybody. Super fun! When it rains, it pours. The San Francisco 49ers have a slew of injuries and the players who were actually healthy looked foolish against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. I said before the game that I was confident, but for no real reason -- discerning readers will note my random confidence is rarely placed properly. Whatever the case, there's one aspect of this game that I predicted correctly: the pass rush and offensive line play on both sides. I'm a little surprised the 49ers managed...

Buccaneers officially sign Trindon Holliday, cut Scott Solomon and Solomon Patton

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had plenty of work to do on Tuesday, as they set to work to replace an ineffective kick punt returner and a suspended defensive lineman. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday as the team was shuffled due to an ineffective return game and a suspension to Da'Quan Bowers. The team officially announced the reported signing of Trindon Holliday, and let go of Solomon Patton to make room. They also released the hard-working Scott Solomon to promote T.J. Fatinikun to the active roster from the practice squad, in a move that is seemingly a like...

Jon Beason Injury: Linebacker '50-50' on season-ending surgery

Linebacker says he is playing without a crucial ligament in his toe. New York Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason is in Charlotte, N.C. to visit Dr. Robert Anderson, and admitted Tuesday that his season might be over. Shutting Beason down is something that was advocated here on Monday, and now it sounds like it might become reality. Jon Beason on WFAN: "Right now, I'd say it's 50-50 i the smart thing is to get it fixed and get ready for next season." — Ebenezer Samuel (@ebenezersamuel) October 21, 2014 Giants LB Jon Beason tells @WFAN660 he's in Charlotte to see Dr. Anderson now....

Raiders week 7 Ballers & Busters

The breakdown of the individual performances both good and bad for the Raiders in their week 7 match-up with the Arizona Cardinals. Another week, another loss. And not near as exciting a loss as the offensive explosion last week against the Chargers. This week saw the Raiders behind from start to finish against the Cardinals. They pulled to within one point at 14-13 but then the Cardinals pulled away and won 24-13. The was more intrigue heading into this game than most of the other games the Raiders had played. They were facing a decent, albeit not dominant team in the Cardinals with...

NFL Power Rankings, Week 8: The Revivifying

The Rams picked up their second win of the 2014 season over the division rival Seahawks. How do the major power rankings adjust the Rams' ranking in light of the victory? With the Rams' second win in the books, let's see how they fare in this week's power rankings.. As always, if there's a power ranking you think merits inclusion, let me know and I'll start putting it in. Average ranking (# of rankings) 23.88 (8) Average change from last week +3.75 Highest ranking (source) 23rd (multiple sources) Lowest ranking (source) 26th (Kirwan) Biggest positive change (source) +7 (SB...
Darren Sproles injury: Eagles rusher feels he can play against Arizona Cardinals

Darren Sproles injury: Eagles rusher feels he can play against Arizona Cardinals

It appears there's a decent chance Eagles running back Darren Sproles plays this week. It came as a little bit of a surprise on Tuesday morning when it was reported that Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles would be participating in the team's light practice. It did not look good when Sproles suffered an MCL injury in Week 5 against the New York Giants. Reports following the injury indicated that Sproles would miss at least on or two games. It now seems like there's a decent chance that Sproles won't miss any playing time, which is certainly good news for Philadelphia's offense...

Ten Thoughts on the NFL: Chicago Bears and beyond

I have some NFL thoughts. Ten of them to be exact. Check out what I have and leave a few of your own in the comment section. 1) Just when we think the Cleveland Browns have turned a corner they lose to the previously winless Jacksonville Jaguars. And just when quarterback Brian Hoyer seemed to have established himself the The QB in Cleveland, he goes 16 of 41 with a fumble and an interception. It's time to warm up the Johnny Manziel stories again. 2) One more nugget from that game. I've always thought Denard Robinson could be effective at running back. After a career high 127 yards rushing,...

Who Are The Building Blocks For The Atlanta Falcons?

Who Are The Building Blocks For The Atlanta Falcons?

Considering the future. The Lions game is looming, but with the future of this team very much in the balance, I wanted to ask a question about the future of this football team, since the future is very much on our minds at the moment. Who are the building blocks of this Falcons team, going forward? I'm not talking purely about elite talents, because there's a relatively short list of those on this Falcons team. I'm considering players who are already very good, have a ton of potential or would fit as starters or rotational pieces in the years ahead. I'm not considering players who by virtue...
