Football Outsiders: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan wasn't worth his cap hit in 2015

Fact: Matt Ryan invented deep dish pizza Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan himself wouldn't defend his play last season. It was that bad. Because he wasn't at his best, Ryan has seen his fair share of criticism this offseason. It's not personal; it's just that we've grown to expect more from him. So it should come as no surprise that Football Outsiders is saying Ryan wasn't worth his cap hit in 2015. In short, they're using their PAYD (pay by average yards and demand) metric to come to this conclusion. (PAYD is explained in detail here if you're interested.) They estimate his 2015...

"The Godfather" Gil Brandt says trade for Julio Jones "almost looks cheap"

Five years after the fact, NFL analysts believe this blockbuster trade was one of the team's best moves in franchise history. Back in 2011, Thomas Dimitroff made what was believed to be a career-defining move: trading away a slew of picks to move up for the 2nd drafted wide receiver in 2011. The move was full of risk. Julio Jones was considered by some as a possession receiver who could not play up to his elite timed speed. Julio did not have the hands, route running skills, or production of University of Georgia's A.J. Green, but looked to have monster potential after blocking in Alabama's...

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: Fantasy Draft, Fireworks (Suck), and Humpday Cocktails

Goooooood evening Los Angeles Rams’ fans. Hoping this humpday has treated you well. Alright...enough of the small talk. Let’s get to it. Feel free to open it up to other topics...it is, after all, an open thread. Who Are You Drafting In Fantasy Football in 2016? If you land the first spot in your fantasy football league this year, who are you taking? It’s always a very risky move and, quite frankly, it’s why I hate getting the top spot. I’d much rather have a late first round pick. But I digress. According to Fantasy Pros, the Top 5 players being drafted this year (thus far) are...

Don't Call It A Comeback: Ranking Tony Romo's Fourth-Quarter Comebacks (#22)

Over the next several weeks before training camp, let's relive some of Tony Romo's best comeback stories. This one was an ugly slugfest with a division rival, but they ain't always pretty. [In the ten seasons that Tony Romo has been the starting quarterback, he's engineered some great fourth-quarter heroics to bring the Cowboys to victories. Since 2006, no quarterback has had more fourth-quarter comeback victories, 25 to be exact, than Tony Romo. His passer rating in the final quarter of football is an astounding 102.9, five points higher than the number two guy (Aaron Rodgers). Romo also...

Andrew Luck contract: Colts QB is overrated but not overpaid

The Indianapolis Colts heard the news about Doug Baldwin on Tuesday and decided "Man, we gotta get in on this news cycle while the gettin's good" and announced a five-year contract extension for Andrew Luck. The deal is worth $123 million from 2017-2021, and is worth $139 million if you include the $16 million he was already scheduled to make this season. It is the richest contract in NFL history and has "$87 million guaranteed," whatever that even means anymore. The point is that Luck is now super-duper rich as opposed to yesterday when he was ... no wait, he's really been super-duper rich...

49ers roster breakdowns, 90-in-90: OLB Corey Lemonier

Breaking down the 90 players on the 49ers offseason roster in 90 posts (over 90 or so days). We move on to outside linebacker Corey Lemonier. Each year, we run a series of post called "90-in-90" here at Niners Nation. The idea is that we'll take a look at every single player on the roster, from the very bottom to the top and break them down a few different ways. This is to help give everyone a basic understanding of a roster. Of course, this roster will change, and some days we'll have more than one so it's not strictly one per day but you get the idea. The San Francisco 49ers pass rush has...

A few familiar faces are hoping to lead a turnaround in the Meadowlands, as the Giants struggled mightily on defense in 2015. Their first contest coming out of the bye will be at home against the New York Giants, the subject of this opponent preview. The G-Men struggled last season, finishing 6-10 in one of the poorest divisions in the NFL. Following head coach Tom Coughlin’s retirement, they hired former Packers...

Cordarrelle Patterson Admits He Needs To Work Harder

Did he say it with his chest, though? One of the more frustrating players to watch for the Minnesota Vikings over the last two seasons has been wide receiver and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson. While his play on the field as a returner has remained at a very high level, his role as a wide receiver on the team has gone from potential breakout star at the beginning of 2014 to benched in favor of an undrafted free agent, to a grand total of two catches last year. His slide into the dog house started sometime after the overtime win in Tampa in 2014, his high water mark for the season. He...
