Aaron Burbridge will get opportunities to compete for 49ers slot receiver role

How much of a contribution do you expect from Burbridge in his rookie season? The San Francisco 49ers lost a significant offensive weapon this offseason, with Anquan Boldin likely landing somewhere else in free agency. The team did not add a wide receiver until the sixth round of this year's draft, selecting Michigan state product Aaron Burbridge. He is not expected to replace Anquan Boldin, but he might provide some similar skills. Burbridge took home Big Ten receiver of the year honors this past year, catching 85 passes for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns. He spent much of his time in...

Packers sign Stanford rookies Blake Martinez and Kyle Murphy to rookie contracts

Two more rookies have inked their deals, which leaves just three more to go. The Green Bay Packers' front office continues to work this week during rookie minicamp. With the crop of seven draft picks in town for their first practices and formal exposure to the locker room at Lambeau Field, those players are continuing to sign their rookie contracts. The latest two names to put pen to paper are the two Stanford Cardinal products: fourth-round inside linebacker Blake Martinez (as reported by ESPN) and sixth-round offensive lineman Kyle Murphy (reported by Packer Report). Martinez was chosen...

2016 NFL Draft: Salary cap hits for the Seahawks' draft picks

A quick note on Seahawks' rookie cap hits: All rookies make a base salary of $450k, and this will go up by $90k per season as they progress through their rookie contract for most players. From Round 3 to Round 7,  all these players get the $90k "per year raise," but 2nd round picks and 1st round picks get a bigger raise. For instance, Germaine Ifedi (Pick 31 overall, 1st rounder) will start at $450k, but get a $375k raise each season. Jarran Reed (Pick 49 overall, 2nd Rounder) will start at $450k but get a $222k raise each season. To determine a player's cap hit, you simply take their...

Highlights from Justin Tuck's retirement press conference

Justin Tuck met with the New York media one last time. One of the greats in the history of the New York Giants is retired Friday afternoon. Justin Tuck reflected on his career in the NFL and as a Giant in his parting press conference. And in the words of our own Ed Valentine, who made the trek down to East Rutherford foe the rookie mini-camp, Tuck was "Terrific". On his retirement, and being able to come back and retire as a Giant, Tuck said "To retire a Giants I outkicked my coverage." Adding "Words don't express how I feel about this organization." He was asked about the Giants' 2007...

Buccaneers rookie mini-camp roster includes 21 tryout players

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced their rookie mini-camp roster for the next three days. The Bucs get their seven draft picks and nineteen undrafted free agents in the building for the first time, adding a whopping 25 tryout players who hope to make the roster -- but are mostly there just to serve as camp players so they can actually go through practice. After all, if you have wide receivers, you need quarterbacks to throw them the ball. Quarterbacks like, apparently, Steven Bench. We talked about all of these undrafted free agents when they were announced, and the draft picks have...

Dallas Cowboys Offseason 2016: Cowboys Draft Picks On Defense Will Get Plenty Of Opportunities

The Cowboys drafted some players for their defense, but will any of them be able to help in 2016? Though Babe Laufenberg doesn't like hearing this, Ezekiel Elliott does help alleviate the stress that is on this defense and also helps the Cowboys' offense become more effective. One thing where we agree is that the Cowboys need to allocate better resources to the defense. At some point in time, the only way for the Cowboys to improve their defense is going to be spending resources on it. Is there something we may be missing here? Some elaborate plan for their defense that we can't see right...

49ers release four players to make room for draft picks and UDFA signees

It's already that time of the off season where cuts are made. The 49ers released four players to make room for their 11 draft picks and 11 UDFAs. Fooch's note: The team also announced nine of their draft picks have signed. That list includes DeForest Buckner, Rashard Robinson, Ronald Blair, Aaron Burbridge, John Theus, Fahn Cooper, Jeff Driskel, Kelvin Taylor, and Prince Charles Iworah. The only draft picks unsigned are Joshua Garnett and Will Redmond. The NFL can be a cutthroat business and the time for the first round of releases is already upon the league. The San Francisco 49ers signed...

2016 NFL undrafted rookies: Who are the UDFA long snappers in Arizona Cardinals camp?

Get to know a couple more of the undrafted rookies. Today, in our going through the undrafted rookies, we turn to the two long snappers. I focus on both of them because typically there are no highlights or stats to pull up for long snappers. Their measurables aren't all that important, either. What is important is that they consistently deliver a perfect snap to the punter or the kick holder. Arizona signed two undrafted rookie long snappers. With the retirement of Mike Leach, they need to find one. It is safe to say it is highly likely one of these two players will be on the final roster...

Lions ink nine rookie draft picks, A'Shawn Robinson still unsigned

The Detroit Lions have signed almost all of their 2016 NFL draft class. The Detroit Lions announced on Friday they have signed nine of their ten picks from the 2016 NFL Draft class. The one player missing? Alabama defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson. No word yet if there's a holdup in negotiations or if there is something else delaying the Robinson signing, but at this point there is no real reason for concern. Although the second-round pick will likely miss the beginning of rookie minicamp -- which begins on Friday -- there's no reason to believe Robinson will hold out. The new collective...

Friday Open Thread, Part Deux: May 6, 2016

Wow, that filled up quickly, even with deleted comments. Thread's full! Wow, busy day today. Here's a new open thread for you. Here's a new rule that I'm only posting one time: Don't be a jerk. If you are, and comments get deleted, don't cry. If you're banned, you'll know why. NOW DROP IT! Thanks. News since our last open thread: Arif posted Podcast 131: Matt Harmon Rides the Roflcopter. Ted tells us that there's not a lot of job openings for the Vikings' roster. Willie Beavers (snicker) signed a contract with the Vikings, and so did Kentrell Brothers. From...

Falcons 53 man roster projection: Who stays and who goes?

A wildly early guess for the Falcons roster. My esteemed colleague Aaron Freeman at FalcFans released his 53 man roster projection today, and in the interest of embarrassing myself by getting fewer players right than him, I'm going to deliver my project right now. Please note unlike Aaron, who is wise, I'm not going to include any potential free agents in the mix here. This is purely players who are currently on the roster or competing to be. Giants rookie jersey numbers: Who wears what, and who was the best to wear it

Some jerseys weigh more than others. The new names have new numbers. The 2016 New York Giants draft class have all been assigned their jerseys for the upcoming year. As a draft pick, you already have high expectations pressed upon you, but nothing compares to the weight of history. With every number comes a lineage of players who have worn it before you. In anticipation of rookie training camp, we give you a quick rundown on what numbers the rookies have chosen, and who has worn them best for the Giants over the years. Disclaimer: It's important to note that all numbers are subject to...

Los Angeles Rams Odds Don't Improve After Drafting Jared Goff

Las Vegas casinos updated their odds, and they don't view the Rams in a more positive light. Quite the contrary..... The Los Angeles Rams have used their immense draft capital in recent years to build a solid defense, a young and developing OL, and to collect a pair of electric play-makers on offense. That has led to a belief among some fans that the Rams are "Only a QB away" from being contenders in the NFC West. I don't necessarily agree with that. Nor did 3k in his piece from December. Now, the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas agrees. After drafting Jared Goff #1 overall, the Rams odds...

DeForest Buckner signs 49ers rookie contract, per report

The 49ers are getting their rookies signed quickly. We break down the projected salary cap numbers for DeForest Buckner. The San Francisco 49ers appear to have DeForest Buckner signed and ready to get going. NFL Network reporter Rand Getlin tweeted that he is hearing the defensive tackle has signed his rookie contract. The 2011 collective bargaining agreement made this all a lot easier, creating a rookie wage scale that gets most players signed shortly after the draft. Here is a rundown of the projected numbers for the deal, courtesy of Over The Cap. A year ago, Arik Armstead's contract...

Three Years Later, Sports Illustrated Upgrades Grade For 2013 Cowboys Draft From C+ to B+

Widely ridiculed for picking Travis Frederick at the time, the 2013 Cowboys draft looks much better three years later. Three years ago, in grades published immediately after the 2013 draft, Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated panned the Cowboys draft: The Travis Frederick selection was a reach. A major reach. Fellow C Brian Schwenke was taken 76 picks later and it's hard to say Frederick is noticeably better. It got better from there, with TE Gavin Escobar, WR Terrance Williams and S J.J. Wilcox, for starters. The Cowboys, though, still need help at RT, possibly a backup RB, another pass...

USA Today is Trolling Chicago Bears' fans again

USA Today Sports must have one mandate; Pick a big market team and poke their fan base. The last couple of offseasons that big market has been Chicago, and the team has been the Chicago Bears. You certainly remember their Power Rankings last May when they had the Bears at #32, "Remember that movie 'Unstoppable'? John Fox may need to recruit Denzel Washington to parachute in and avert this train wreck." They must not have received the memo that Fox improves a franchise when he takes over. You see putting a perennial bad team like the Cleveland Browns at #32 wouldn't really move the needle....

First-round draft pick? So what, Eli Apple's mom becomes a bigger star

And the best thing about the Giants first-round pick is that he really doesn't care. Eli Apple is a first-round NFL draft choice for a New York team with a perfect name for New York City. He could be headed for stardom. His mom, though, Annie Apple, is already a star, having taken the social media world by storm using the Twitter name (@SurvivinAmerica). The new Giant cornerback seems to have no issue with sharing the spotlight. "I have no problem with at all," Apple said Friday during rookie mini-camp at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. ""She wants the whole spotlight she can have...

Packers 2016 Rookie Minicamp Roster: UDFAs, tryout players, and returning players

Wondering who is in Green Bay for rookie camp this weekend? Here's the full list of draft picks, signees, and more who are practicing at the Don Hutson Center. The Green Bay Packers begin rookie minicamp today, and they began the day by announcing the signing of 19 undrafted free agent players. Combined with 62 players already on the roster and seven draft picks, this brings the team's 90-man roster up to 88 players, which means that two tryout players should get contract offers after this weekend's practices. Thanks to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, we also have the complete roster from rookie...

Don’t Walk: Stability and the Seahawks receivers

Rookies? Where we’re going we don’t need rookies. Imagine a dimension where Russell Wilson never existed. We know in this alternate reality Matt Flynn doesn’t work out either, because he’s had his chances with other teams since and if he actually didn’t suck (and it was just his bad luck to be in our timeline and get hit by a dangeruss meteor) he could have made it with the Raiders or Jets. I mean in a universe of infinite Flynns there’s probably one Flynn who’s fixing his bloody marys with the pulp of NFL defenses and stirring giant margaritas using his Lombardi...

That leaves only third-round pick Darian Thompson and fourth-round pick B.J. Goodson yet to sign. The Giants also announced the signings of 14 undrafted free agents. More players could be signed after the rookie mini-camp concludes on Saturday. UDFA signings JOSH WOODRUM, QB, LIBERTYHeight:...
