Golden Nuggets: The Ray McDonald meltdown continues

Thursday, May 28, 2015 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web. Good morning everyone. Former 49er Ray McDonald continued his downhill spiral with his second arrest in three days. This time for violating the restraining order placed on him by the woman from the incident a couple days ago. At this point, Ray McDonald is not only looking at jail time, but never again playing in the NFL. No team is going to sign him any time soon, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the league go ahead and make him ineligible. After the incident a couple days ago I...

Cowboys Greg Hardy Set To Begin The Appeals Process

Facing a ten-game suspension from the league, Hardy will miss Thursday's OTA when he heads to Washington for the first phase of the appeals process. You all know the story; there is no need to rehash the past of Greg Hardy. Like it or not, the man is a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He is also a player facing a ten-game suspension handed down by the commissioner.  As is his right, Hardy has appealed the sanctions levied against him by the league, and now his appeal is set to be heard by Harold Henderson on Thursday in Washington. Henderson was hand-picked by the commissioner to be the...

What Atlanta Falcons are poised for a breakout season in 2015?

Fact: Devonta Freeman isn't penalized when he breaks a cell phone contract The Atlanta Falcons may surprise some of their critics this season. With added depth and some semblance of a pass rush on defense, they're equipped for a potential rebound in 2015. While it's a long road ahead, there is room for cautious optimism. From a player-centered viewpoint, the Falcons' future is unclear. Sure, guys like Julio Jones, Matt Ryan, and Desmond Trufant are established. But one tier down there's a wealth of potential talent, guys like Devonta Freeman, Robert Alford, and Kemal Ishmael. If we want to...

Sam Bradford Injury: Eagles quarterback has been limited in offseason workouts

Not surprising. According to a report from Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford has been a limited participant during the team's offseason workouts. "But the star acquisition of the offseason is not expected to be on stage at the NovaCare Complex. Quarterback Sam Bradford has been limited throughout spring workouts and has not been participating in team drills during this week's organized team activities, NFL sources said.Mark Sanchez, who re-upped with the Eagles days before the Bradford trade, has been handling quarterback duties with the...

Adrian Peterson responds: he wants a 'secure future', not a trade

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson made a statement about his current situation and clarified why he's holding out of Organized Team Activities. On the next episode of Days of Our Vikings Lives... Earlier today we told you how Mike Zimmer felt about Adrian Peterson holding out of the team's OTAs. And in true Zimmer fashion, he kept it real and straight to the point--either AP was playing in Minnesota this season or he wasn't playing at all. (As if we needed another reason to love the no-nonsense Vikings head coach.) But since this team is obviously incapable of going more than...

NFL Top 100: Jeremy Maclin ranks No. 61 on the list

The former Eagles wide receiver made the NFL Top 100 list as revealed by NFL Network. NFL Network has been running their annual Top 100 players in the NFL series. It was revealed on Wednesday night that former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver made the list at No. 61. Maclin may no longer be with the Eagles, but it was his 2014 performance with Philadelphia that earned him this spot. Here's what we wrote about Maclin earlier this offseason: "Numbers: 1043 snaps, 85 rec, 1318 yards, 15.5 Y/R, 10 TD, 72 Long, 1 drop, 0 fumblesReview: Jeremy Maclin had his fair share of doubters heading...

Dallas Cowboys Offseason 2015: Joseph Randle Exuding Confidence In OTA's

As the organized team activities begin around the league, one Cowboy is certainly looking at making the most of his chance. The Cowboys have an opening in the backfield and many players will get a chance at the starting job between now and the first game . One player on the Cowboys' roster is already making a few declarations. Joseph Randle wants this job and had first crack on Tuesday. Some things that he said showed the confidence that he darn-near expects it. "He (Murray) had a good year last year. But I got to sit back and watch a lot and I felt like there was a lot of meat left on...

49ers have a sleep-talker amongst them

The folks at 49ers.com posted a recent interview with rookie safety Jaquiski Tartt in which he discusses all the learning he is doing with Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea and former high school teammate Jimmie Ward. Tartt will get plenty of special teams opportunity in year one, but his potential as a safety will get some development time behind Reid and Bethea. Those two are certainly a good pair of safeties to learn behind. All that is well and good, but it is the final quotation that is noteworthy. Tartt is rooming with fellow rookie safety Jermaine Whitehead, who the 49ers signed as an...

Report: Dezmen Southward had knee surgery, hopes to be ready for training camp

The second-year (now) cornerback's surgery doesn't sound serious, but he'll miss some time. Per ESPN's Vaughn McClure, Dezmen Southward had knee surgery today. According to McClure's report, it's not serious, and the team hopes Southward will be healthy by the time training camp rolls around in July. Southward was held out of yesterday's OTAs, and head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the knee injury when speaking to the media after practice. Still, surgery is a big jump from missing a day with a knee injury, so this news is a little surprising. If the hope is for Southward to be physically ready...

Giants OTA practice report: Highlights from the first OTA workout

Here are a few observations from Wednesday's OTA. We have already covered the two biggest news items from the New York Giants first Phase Three OTA Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. In case you were doing something unconsionable -- like working -- and not paying attention to Big Blue View, those were: Defensive end Robert Ayers being carted off with a left leg injury on the very first play of 11-on-11 drills. The revamped offensive line debuting with Ereck Flowers being given the opportunity to show he can handle the left tackle role in the absence of Will Beatty. Here are a...

Considering NFC West offensive lines

NFC West O-Line Rankings - Jim Miller: 1. Cardinals 2. Seahawks 3. 49ers 4. Rams Pat Kirwan: 1. Seahawks 2. Cardinals 3. 49ers 4. Rams— SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) May 25, 2015 The folks at SiriusXM NFL Radio are putting together a rundown of rankings for each position group by division, and earlier this week they got to the offensive lines. The tweet above features rankings by Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan, who have a regular show on the radio. The 49ers offensive line is a big question because of absences and turnover. Mike Iupati departed for Arizona in free agency, and Brandon...

Arizona Cardinals OTAs: Mike Iupati learning scheme as he should

But evaluating the guard is hard to do in shorts. After the Arizona Cardinals held their Tuesday practice, opening up their second week of OTAs, head coach Bruce Arians was asked about how guard Mike Iupati has looked. The prize of the offseason, Iupati is expected to be a major upgrade to the offensive line. But since practices are not in pads and are not full contact, it is hard to say. "Mike's not a soccer player," Arians said, citing as he always does about offseason work not being football. "He's a physical guy and this isn't the time to be physical." Arians did note how Iupati is...

Falcons Uniform History: #4 belongs to Jay Feely

No, really. There are some numbers occupied by multiple franchise greats, numbers that call to mind vastly different eras of successful Falcons football and icons both past and present. Inarguably the best player ever to wear #4 in Atlanta was Brett Favre, but his ignoble run with the Falcons makes him a non-starter for this list. This is a man who attempted four passes in a Falcons jersey, throwing two picks, so you can't consider him eligible unless you're some sort of loathsome half-Packers, half-Falcons fan. If you move past Favre, you're left with either Jay Feely or Dan Styzinski, a...

Lions rumors: Tom Lewand shuts down trade talk for now

Remember those rumors about the Detroit Lions potentially trading for another defensive tackle? Well, it doesn't sound like any moves are about to happen. Over the weekend, Jason La Canfora suggested that the Detroit Lions were looking into adding extra help at defensive tackle. To go a step further, he indicated that the Lions might be looking at potentially trading for another defensive tackle. After all, they previously made moves to add Haloti Ngata and Gabe Wright, so another trade wouldn't exactly be a huge shock at this point. As it turns out, though, it doesn't sound like a trade...

What Would You Consider A Successful 2015 Season For The Cowboys?

Making the playoffs is probably a minimum requirement to consider 2015 a success for the Cowboys, but is there more? I know that there are some eager beavers out there who read nothing more than the title of this post and are now itching to tell the world that "In Dallas, success is measured in Super Bowls," and that anything less is unacceptable. Dear Mr. Eager Beaver, please spare us that entitled nonsense. What endears us Cowboys fans so much to the rest of the NFL fanbase is our collective ability to hold on to successes from 20 years ago and derive some sort of expectation and...
