NFL Power Rankings 2014, week 4: Buccaneers are not the worst, anymore

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not the worst, after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Celebrate good times! The Bucs won a game! I get to be not-completely-negative-about-power-rankings. Wow. How long ago has that been? 2012? Was there a moment of positivity there? The first few weeks of 2011? Or was it as far back as 2010, when the Bucs actually had a winning season (but still no playoffs)? I don't know, but I like it. Yay being positive. Danny Kelly has the Bucs in 26th place, up from 31st last week. Shutdown Corner has the Bucs in 28th place, up from 32nd. The Washington Post has them way...

Falcons to work out C/G Leroy Harris

Falcons to work out C/G Leroy Harris

In news that does not suggest any reason for optimism about Joe Hawley's knee injury, Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Falcons will work out center Leroy Harris. While an official update on center Joe Hawley's status is not yet available, there isn't much encouraging news bouncing around regarding Hawley's injury. First of all, Adam Caplan played harbinger of doom with this report. On #Falcons C Joe Hawley, hearing his right knee injury is more serious than first thought. — Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) September 30, 2014 Then Ian Rapoport reported that the Falcons will consider...

Lions promote George Winn from practice squad

Lions promote George Winn from practice squad

In need of help at running back, the Detroit Lions have signed George Winn from their practice squad. By the end of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, the Detroit Lions were down to only Reggie Bush at running back. Joique Bell suffered an apparent concussion, and Theo Riddick and Montell Owens both left with hamstring injuries. Aside from Bush, fullback Jed Collins was really the only other option in the backfield if the Lions wanted to run the ball. It was not a good situation, to say the least. In order to make sure they're not in a similar situation this week, the Lions have...

Five (Not So Quick) Takeaways From Dallas's Win Over Saints

Five (Not So Quick) Takeaways From Dallas's Win Over Saints

Five observations on Dallas's dominating victory against the New Orleans Saint's. Overreaction Monday is so much nicer after a win. Three weeks after a disastrous opening day loss against the 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys are flying high, winning three in a row and exorcising some demons against Sean Payton and the Saints. A game like Sunday's is actually hard to analyze; so many things went right that it's hard to pinpoint any one thing, as Al "The Coin Flip" Michaels can attest. That being said, I'm not afraid to give it the old college try, so here are five takeaways from Sunday's victory....

Should ILB Paul Worrilow Be Benched?

Should ILB Paul Worrilow Be Benched?

Worrilow has been nearly free of criticism. The undrafted free agent seemed to be the only player who could tackle in 2013, working his way up to playing time and shining in a lost season. After adding weight, and calling the plays, the surprising player is at the top of the team's problems. Undrafted linebacker Paul Worrilow was one of the reasons Atlanta Falcons fans were optimistic coming into 2014. The undersized player added weight, quickly became a starter, and earned play calling duties. However, this season he has been a disaster. The middle of the field is consistently open, with...

The FCC has ended the blackout rule, NFL could follow suit

If it's up to the FCC, there will be no more sports blackouts. The NFL still has to follow suit, though. The FCC has officially removed the infamous blackout rule from its books, per Daniel Kaplan. The rule prevented games from being seen on television in a home team's market if the game did not sell out of non-premium tickets. However, the elimination of that rule does not mean that the NFL will remove its own blackout rule: it has just lost an excuse to hide behind. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were recordholders in home blackouts from 2010 through 2012, with 19 of 23 home games blacked out...

Scott Wells was in the ICU this summer

Scott Wells was in the ICU this summer

The Rams' starting center missed a chunk of the preseason thanks to a tick bite. It could have been worse. A lot worse. Jim Thomas broke a story early this morning that Scott Wells was admitted to a hospital for four days this summer when a tick bite left him infected with ehrlichia, a bacterial compound that kills 1.8% of those that come down with it. He was on antibiotics for nearly two weeks, which affected his appetite and taste leading to him losing 20 pounds in the four days he was in the hospital. Two interesting parts of this story: the media approach and the affect on the...

Packers-Bears Performance Grades: Aaron Rodgers powers Packers to rebound win in Chicago

Packers-Bears Performance Grades: Aaron Rodgers powers Packers to rebound win in Chicago

We take a second look at the game film from the Packers 38-17 road win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday and hand out positional performance grades. One week after the Packers offense looked dysfunctional and broken in Detroit, Aaron Rodgers made good on his advice to Cheesehead nation when he told everyone to "R-E-L-A-X" heading into the team's NFC North road showdown with the Chicago Bears. While the first half went back and forth, with both team's offenses carving up the opposion for huge yardage and a 21-17 halftime score, the Packers defense created some crucial turnovers in the third...

How Lions' future opponents fared in Week 4

A look at how the Detroit Lions' future opponents performed in Week 4 of the season. In Week 4, the Detroit Lions' future opponents combined to go 5-6. Here's a look at how each team performed: Week 5 - vs. Bills (2-2) - lost to Texans, 23-17 Buffalo jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but it didn't hold up. The Bills lost their lead in the third quarter when J.J. Watt intercepted E.J. Manuel and went 80 yards for a touchdown. Manuel rebounded later with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams to make this a 3-point game, but he was picked off again with around a minute left in the fourth...

Carson Palmer injury: Cardinals QB 'slowly' improving; Guard Jonathan Cooper cracks lineup

The Arizona Cardinals were hoping to get Carson Palmer back after the bye, but the former Bengals and Raiders quarterback said he isn't throwing as much as he'd like. It seems most Arizona Cardinals fans were hoping for the return of their starting quarterback Carson Palmer this week, following the team's Week 4 bye. That might not be the case. Palmer is still recovering from the nerve damage in his right shoulder, and it sounds like it's taking longer than expected. "I was hoping to be throwing more than I am," Palmer said. "It's slowly improving. Nothing ever improves as fast as you want...

Daily Slop: Redskins Begin Work for Seahawks Game; Where do new Redskins Sanford, Crawford fit on the depth chart?

A look at the top Redskins stories around the web Washington Redskins failed with technique - Washington Redskins Blog - ESPNThe problem started with the bump-and-run coverage coach Jay Gruden said they employed against the New York Giants. It becomes a problem if the corners don’t get their hands on the receiver -- as the Washington Redskins rarely tried to do in their 45-14 loss. "We asked them to do it," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "If you’re in bump and run, it’s called ‘bump’ and run for a reason and we just weren’t getting a good piece of them." Time and again the...

Redskins Re-Sign OLB Gabe Miller and DL Robert Thomas to Practice Squad

The Redskins officially fill out the practice squad today. Yesterday the Redskins announced the signing of safety Jamarca Sanford and the re-signing of cornerback Richard Crawford to the 53-man roster.  They also announced the signing of offensive tackle Terren Jones to the team's practice squad, which still left one spot open on the 10-member squad.  OLB Gabe Miller was cut following the Thursday night game against the Giants, but his agent tweeted that he would be rejoining the team on the practice squad. This move would have filled out the practice squad, but the team made an...

After four games, the Cowboys' 3-1 record is a welcome respite from the three consecutive 2-2 starts of the previous years. But does that mean that all is well in Cowboys land? The State Of The NFC South, Week 4: All Is Darkness and Fire

The State Of The NFC South, Week 4: All Is Darkness and Fire

Is this all there is? The NFC South is typically one of the most competitive divisions in football, and sure enough, all four teams are within one game of one another. Let's take a quick gander at the standings, shall we? Panthers: 2-2Falcons: 2-2Saints: 1-3Buccaneers: 1-3 My God. The NFC South has been an unmitigated tire fire thus far in 2014, and to look upon the futility of the four teams contained within is to chance madness. The Panthers have a weak offensive line, secondary and receiving corps, and appear to be backsliding mightily after a fine start. Our Falcons have one of the...
