Before Raiders rookies head into their first training camp, they took time to inspire kids

Wednesday, the day before training camp is to begin, all 23 of the Raiders drafted and undrafted rookies took to the field at Memorial High School in Napa for a football clinic for some 327 kids from the Napa Valley Boys and Girls Club. It's a new initiative called the Raiders Rookie Club in which the kids get to meet this year's crop of NFL hopefuls while doing a Play 60 style field day. "This is everything," said Raiders fourth round pick Jon Feliciano. "This is what we're supposed to do as athletes and we're blessed to have such an impact on kids' lives and to be out here. You've gotta...

Who wore it best: TE Todd Christensen One of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. The Raiders were actually his third NFL team, though he played all but one game in his career with the Raiders. He was originally drafted by the Cowboys in 1978, but never played a game for them. In 1979 he played one game with the Giants before joining the Raiders where he would spend the rest of Played ten seasons with the Raiders from...

Ranking the AFC West by center

We reach the final offensive position ranking in the AFC West -- Center. After having ranked the teams by all offensive skill positions as well as tackle and guard. Let's take a look at how all the teams stack up at the center position. 1. Raiders - Rodney Hudson With a bullet, the Raiders new center is the best in the division. And his subtraction from the Chiefs leaves them to scramble to replace him. Hudson played at a Pro Bowl level last season and became the highest paid at his position this offseason. And he is just 25 years old. 2. Chargers - Chris Watt After the Raiders, the...

Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 47: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

Training camp report day is just a couple days away now. And 47 days from the Raiders season opener. Another day, another number. Today, number 47 and a classic Raiders reclamation project. Who wore it best: RB Tyrone Wheatley This former first round pick was given up for dead by the New York Giants. The Raiders dusted him off and made him their ground and pound back in Jon Gruden's offense. The Raiders had a resurgence of their own during Wheatley's time in Oakland. He ran for over 1000 yards in 2000 to help the Raiders reach the AFC Championship game. He was the smash to Charlie Garner's...

Cardinals take page out of Al Davis playbook in hiring first female assistant coach

The Arizona Cardinals made history today. They hired the first ever female coach. Her name is Jen Welter and Cardinals' head coach Bruce Arians has brought her into the fold as a coaching intern. She will coach the team's inside linebackers in training camp and preseason. This isn't just a gimmick either. Welter has a lengthy football resume. She played college rugby and then went on to play in the Women's Football Alliance for 14 years. Welter was also the first female to play a non-kicking position in a men's professional football league. She played running back and special teams for the...

Raiders place LB Sio Moore on PUP list to begin training camp

The Raiders have placed linebacker Sio Moore on the Physically Unable to Perform list with a hip injury. Moore suffered a hip injury late last season and had offseason surgery to repair it. The third year linebacker had practiced on a limited basis in minicamp last month and it the hope was he would be ready to go to begin training camp. There's no way of knowing exactly how long he will be on the PUP list, but based on his progress in the offseason, I wouldn't suspect it would be too long. Ray Ray Armstrong has primarily filled in at weak side linebacker in Moore's absence. The coaching...

Ranking the AFC West by offensive guards

We pick back up our Ranking the AFC West series with a look at the guard position, where there isn't a team in the division that can boast of two surefire solid starters at both guard positions, but where all have at least one road grader in place. 1. Chargers - Orlando Franklin, D.J. Fluker The Chargers could be starting two former right tackles at each guard spot this season. Franklin spent the first three years of his career at right tackle for the Broncos before switching to left guard last season where he had played well. He signed with the Chargers as a free agent this offseason....

Who wore it best: CB Lionel Washington Lionel Washington had a long 15-year NFL career, most of which as a Raider. His career started in 1983 as a 4th round pick by the St Louis Cardinals. After four seasons there, he joined the Raiders where he would spent the next eight seasons. From 1989-93 he was an everyday starting corner for the Raiders. Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 49: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

The Raiders rookies report to training camp in Napa today. There is also under 50 days until the Raiders 2015 season opener. We're in the home stretch now. And with 49 days left, we look at the best to wear number 49 and who wears it now. Who wore it best: WR Mike Siani (1972-77) It's tempting not to put Carl Weathers in this slot just because he is Apollo Creed and was in Predator. But I gotta go with those who did more than warm the bench for the Raiders for a couple seasons. The Raiders first round pick in 1972, Siani played six seasons in Oakland. The first couple seasons, he was a...

And for the rookies, they are on the eve of reporting to training camp. You can almost smell that Napa air and feel the excitement of football right around the corner. To mark 50 days to go, it only seems fitting the best to wear that number for the Raiders was one of only a handful of players to be on all three of the team's Super Bowl teams. Raiders have lowest contract value in NFL, nearly half that of leader

Based on Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie's penchant for not offering big contracts to his players, it could be assumed they would have a pretty low guaranteed money figure as well. A recent study by Business Insider revealed not only do they have the lowest contract value in the league, but they have nearly half that of the Cowboys who lead the NFL. These figures were collected from data on spotrac.com and the findings show the Raiders have $385.2 million in combined contract value. That's some $26 million less than the Patriots ($411.7 million) who have the second lowest money...
