Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 71: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

Happy Fourth of July everyone. And, of course, Happy Birthday, Al Davis. We are now at 71 days until the 2015 season which means we recognize the best to every wear the number 71 for the Raiders as well as who currently sports that number in Silver & Black. Who wore it best: DT Bill Pickel He was the Raiders second round pick in 1983, a round after Don Mosebar who was my choice as the best to wear number 72 for the Raiders. So, all in all, a very good draft. Pickel appeared in all 16 games that season as a reserve nose tackle and poste 6.0 sacks on the way to the Raiders win in Super Bowl...

Friday Raiders mailbag 7/3: Can front 7 mask DB deficiencies? Amari Cooper a KR? and more

It's the Friday mailbag! If you sent in a question, you may find your answer here. Or perhaps you will find an answer to a question you didn't think to ask. Matthew asks: Will our front 7 be able to compensate for the deficiencies of the secondary? In other words, will we be able to stop the run at the line and pressure the QB adequately? Stop the run? Yes. Pressure the QB? That is far less certain. They have two large, lane cloggers in the middle in Dan Williams and Justin Ellis, added Mario Edwards, whose strong suit is stopping the run, and we know Khalil Mack can help stop the run from...

What condition the Raiders position is in: Offensive tackle

We check on the current condition of the Raiders offensive tackle position. Judging them as either Strong, Stable, Touch and go, Serious, or Critical. Starters: LT Donald Penn, RT Menelik Watson/Austin Howard Depth: Khalif Barnes, Matt McCants, Anthony Morris, Dan Kistler The left side of the Raiders line is home to Donald Penn, who defied expectations last season as a late free agent addition. There is a battle at right tackle between former second round pick Menelik Watson and former tackle turned guard turned tackle Austin Howard. Condition: Touch and go While the team is quite secure...

Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 72: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

Wow, this was a tough one. It's numbers like 72 that make me wish I didn't have to separate these guys by their number. There are at least three very deserving players in Raider franchise history one could make an argument deserves to be named as the best to wear it. But unfortunately I must choose just one. Who wore it best: C Don Mosebar (1983-94) Mosebar was drafted in the first round by the Raiders in 1983 and unfortunately carried the distinction of being the player chosen just before Dan Marino. It also means he got his Super Bowl ring as a rookie. That year he watched his...

Raiders attend pro day for supplemental draft prospects

The supplemental draft is coming up in a week on July 9. In total there are seven players eligible for that draft. Two of those players were on display Thursday at the West Georgia Pro Day and the Raiders were one of the teams with representatives in attendance to see it. Those players are defensive tackle Dalvon Stuckey and defensive end Darrius Caldwell. Stuckey was a Junior college transfer to West Georgia in 2014. The 6-4, 300-pounder had 40 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks last season. Caldwell dominated the Gulf South Conference last season with 18.5 tackles for loss and...

What condition the Raiders position is in: Tight end

The Raiders put some emphasis on the tight end position this offseason. We check in on it to see whether the condition is Strong, Stable, Touch and go, Serious, or Critical. Starters: Clive Walford, Lee Smith Depth: Mychal Rivera, Brian Leonhardt, Gabe Holmes Much like the wide receiver position, the tight end position for the Raiders has been pretty pathetic for a while now. Zach Miller left after the 2010 season and has never been replaced. Also like the wide receiver position, they set forth to remedy that in the draft by taking Clive Walford in the third round. They also added Lee...

Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 73: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

We've now hit 73 days left until the Raiders kick off the 2015 season. That means we talk about the best to ever wear the number 73 for the team as well as which of the team's 90-man roster is wearing that number today. Who wore it best: OG Charley Hannah (1983-88) Hannah split his 12-year career evenly between the Buccaneers and Raiders. Maybe he just like playing on a team with a pirate mascot, who knows. He was originally a third round pick by the Bucs and spent the first six seasons in Tampa, mostly as a tackle. When he came to the Raiders in 1983, they moved him to guard and he started...

Floyd Kephart: Oakland not making investment in keeping Raiders

In response to the recent reports that panned the proposal made to the Raiders for their new coliseum, Floyd Kephart  took to the radio to defend his proposal. He at points in the interview said the plan was "doable" and the reports were "inaccurate", but mostly he defended the reasoning behind why his proposal was somewhat unorthodox and not ideal. Among the less than ideal details was Kephart asking Mark Davis to sell 20% of the team to his company, New City Development LLC for $200 million. There's also the matter of the Raiders not owning the land on which the coliseum will sit, and...

What condition the Raiders position is in: Wide receiver

Derek Carr recently gushed about his two new starting receivers. Let's take a lot at how the position is stacking up overall. Starters: Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree Depth: Rod Streater, Andre Holmes, Brice Butler, Kenbrell Thompkins, Seth Roberts, Josh Harper, Milton Williams III, Kris Durham, Trindon Holliday, Austin Willis For the first time in a while, the Raiders made wide receiver a priority. They signed Michael Crabtree in free agency and drafted Amari Cooper at fourth overall. Following the drafting of Cooper, they cut James Jones who led the team in catches (73) and touchdowns...

Raiderettes started ball rolling on new California law guaranteeing worker protection for cheerleaders

California today approved a bill that guarantees cheerleaders receive at least minimum wage for their work. To some that may seem like a no brainer, but up until recently it was common practice for cheerleaders to work for small stipends, and often lose money due to appearance requirements set for to keep their jobs. Such was the case with the Raiderettes, who became the first NFL cheering squad to take their complaints to court. Initially it was just Raiderette 'Lacy T' who filed the suit and other Raiderettes began lining up to sign onto the suit as well. They would get the protections...

Derek Carr gushes about new weapons Crabtree, Cooper

It is just mid summer talk, but Derek Carr is already enamored with his two new additions to the receiving corp. Both Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree are already making their mark on the 2nd year QB who recently went on 95.7 The Game and gave praise to his new offensive weapons. Carr heaped praise onto his new rookie receiver Amari Cooper, gushing about his abilities and work ethic. It is just more of the same stuff that we have heard from anybody who has ever known Cooper but it is still refreshing to hear about the excellent chemistry developing already between him and Derek Carr. "He...

Raiders QB Derek Carr Impressed by Rookie WR Amari Cooper

Add Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to the list of people who have been impressed by rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper, Eddie Paskal of Raiders.com reports. Carr appeared on 95.7 The Game Tuesday and had high praise for his newest offensive weapon. “He [Cooper] is ridiculous in and out of his breaks,” said Carr. “His style […]

Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 74: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

We now hit number 74 which means we enter the second quarter of our countdown. Time's just flying by, right? Ok, whatever, just enjoy the triple digit temps of the summer and hush. Who wore it best: DT Tom Keating (1966-72) He joined the Raiders after two seasons in Buffalo. Upon arrival to the Raiders, he immediately was named an AFL All Star. In his second season, he was All AFL. That season he helped the Raiders take the AFL crown and reach Super Bowl II. In total Keating played seven seasons in Oakland. He lined up alongside Big Ben Davidson with the two of them wreaking havoc along the...

Raiders owner Mark Davis meets with LA officials in wake of "one-sided" Oakland proposal

As if to show Oakland that he is not messing around, Mark Davis was in Los Angeles on Tuesday according to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. This just days after what was widely deemed as a "one-sided" coliseum proposal from developer Floyd Kephart, not in favor of the Raiders. Davis and Chargers owner Dean Spanos were both in LA to speak with Mayor Eric Garcetti and promote their plans for a shared stadium in nearby Carson. The two owners are currently attempting to secure the Carson site ahead of Rams owner Stan Kroenke who is looking to build a stadium in Inglewood. Along with...

What condition the Raiders position is in: Running back

Glad you dropped by to see what condition this position is in. Where we rate the running back position for the Raiders as Strong, Stable, Touch and go, Serious, or Critical. Starters: Latavius Murray, FB  Marcel Reece Depth: Roy Helu, Trent Richardson, Taiwan Jones, Michael Dyer, George Atkinson III, FB Jamize Olawale Make no mistake, the Raiders are pinning their hopes on Latavius Murray to be the workhorse for this team. They added Roy Helu as a change-up back and receiver out of the backfield and took a flyer on journeyman former top pick Trent Richardson. They also finally gave up on...

The 1961 Denver Broncos beat the Oakland Raiders and not much else

Brian Shrout and I continue our review of the early history of the Denver Broncos. They beat a hated rival, twice, but other than that the season was going to be another rough outing for a franchise that would struggle for over a decade. The 1961 Denver Broncos left off right where the 1960 Broncos finished. Ever vigilant, they won their first game again in this season, but then would go on to lose 11 of their final 13 games to finish 3-11. They did pick up a win over the Oakland Raiders in the preseason 48-21 in Spokane, Washington of all places. To show how terribly organized the AFL was...

ESPN panel gives Raiders grim outlook, ranks front office worst in NFL

Today ESPN set forth to not just rank teams as they currently look, but to project how good they'll be over the next three seasons. They did that by putting together a panel of three experts - John Clayton, Louis Riddick, and Mike Sando - and have them rate each team on a scale of 0-100 in five categories: roster (excluding quarterback), quarterback, draft, front office and coaching. After all the results were in, they were able to rank each team by where they project they will perform over the next three years. Here is how they explain how to categorize their process: After averaging the...

Raiders Countdown to Kickoff: 75: Who wore it best, who's wearing it now

Another day closer to the Raiders 2015 season means another number. And it also means another legendary Raider. Number 75. A day after detailing one career Raider great on the offensive line - Steve Wisniewski - we move to the other side for a career Raider great pass rusher. One who has some pretty strong NFL bloodlines of his own. Who wore it best: DE Howie Long Howard Michael Long was drafted by the Raiders in the 2nd round in 1981, the year after the Raiders had won their second Super Bowl. In his third season with the team, he would be a major factor in the team getting their third...
