Raiders training camp day 5 wrap: Defense heating up

You know, you'd think I'd know better by now that even when the weather in Napa is cool in the morning, it is no indication of the temperature in the afternoon. What began as a bit chilly this morning, was 90 degrees by the time practice started and here I am in pants, depriving the world of my calves. Anyway... After their first day off this training camp, the Raiders were back in pads again today. They have been eligible to be in pads the past three practices and have been in pads each time. Returning were Jake Murphy and Rod Streater from concussions and Nick Kasa coming off the PUP...

Raiders training camp injury update: Two first team linemen unable to finish practice

Raiders training camp injury update: Two first team linemen unable to finish practice

After a day off of camp in Tuesday, a few guys were able to get healthy. Monday saw the receiving corps getting banged up but that group got good news today with three receivers returning to action - Rod Streater, Jake Murphy, and Nick Kasa. Streater and Murphy were both out on Monday with concussions and had to go through the concussion protocol before returning to action. Kasa had been on the PUP list for the first four days of camp with a hip flexor injury. Kasa and Murphy's return put the tight end position at full strength. The receiver position still has a couple players out. Not...

Mark Davis responds to San Antonio rumors, Bob McNair and Jerry Jones do too

Mark Davis responds to San Antonio rumors, Bob McNair and Jerry Jones do too

When the news first broke that Mark Davis was meeting with San Antonio officials about relocation possibilities for the Oakland Raiders I didn't think very much of it. It is very hard to believe that the Raiders would leave California, that would be a deal breaker for a large amount of the fanbase. Even without believing that it would really happen though, it has become an interesting idea to think about. Don't worry, there won't be any endorsing of the idea to move to San Antonio in this article. There will be an endorsement for the NFL to get a team into San Antonio in general though,...

Brice Butler trained with Calvin Johnson, AJ Green over summer

Last year around this time, Butler was a rookie seventh round pick trying to stand out in a wide open receiver class. He made the team because he showed some potential, but he was not really a part of the Raiders attack, catching just nine passes all season. Must Reads Raiders to have tough decisions at wide receiver Levi Damien Must Reads Raiders to have tough decisions at wide receiver This training camp, there's something different about Butler. He looks to have taken big leaps in his receiving skills. I would go as far as to say the difference in night and day,...

Report: Oakland Raiders Discussing Move to San Antonio

Raiders owner Mark Davis has reportedly met recently with several San Antonio officials to discuss the potential of moving his NFL team from the Bay Area to the Alamo City. There's been talks of a potential move for a current NFL team for some time now. The Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and Buffalo Bills have all been rumored at one point or another as teams to potentially move to different cities. Los Angeles,Toronto and even London have been mentioned as potential destinations for a team to move to. In a bit of a surprising development, it could be the Oakland Raiders moving to San...

Raiders special teams has potential to be very special in 2014

Last season, the Raiders special teams play was anything but special. Sebastian Janikowski missed several kicks he should have made and has said since that he was affected by the change from having Shane Lechler holding for him for 13 years to have Marquette King as his holder. For King's part, he was raw power with no finesse and it took half the season before one could see real improvement in that area. The return game was a travesty. The coaching staff tried one last time to get something out of Jacoby Ford to no avail. They cycled through Taiwan Jones and Greg Jenkins at kick and punt...

Kory Sheets sees an opening with Raiders, runs through it

This isn't the first time Kory Sheets has been in Raiders training camp in Napa. That introduction happened six years ago. He was an undrafted rookie with the 49ers who came up to Napa to have joint practices with the Raiders. Since that time, his career has taken him to many different places, but the one thing that has eluded him is a spot on an NFL roster. In that training camp and preseason, he made a positive impression with the 49ers. That was also back when the cross-bay rivals played against each other each preseason. In that game, he had 12 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. The...

Raiders training camp day 4 wrap: Khalil Mack makes impression

It was day four of Raiders training camp and the Raiders were once again in pads just as they had been on day three. Padded practices will be frequent this year and it sounds like there will be fewer days in shirts and shells than in years past. It's much easier to judge how these players are performing when pads are on. There are a great many drills they just can't do without them, especially when it involves aspects such as blocking, and pass rushing. And with that, we have our first good looks at Khalil Mack. And he's as advertised. He made a fantastic one-handed grab in linebacker...

Raiders training camp injury update: Receiving corps getting banged up

Raiders training camp injury update: Receiving corps getting banged up

We're now four days into Raiders training camp and the receiving corps is looking a little peeked. A position that was at full strength coming in now suddenly has several key members missing time. Rod Streater went down late in practice on Sunday and it was discovered he has a concussion. He was sidelined for practice on Monday and will have to go through the concussion protocol in order to return. Also going out with a concussion on Sunday was tight end, Jake Murphy. He joined Nick Kasa who has been out all of camp on the PUP list. A surprise addition to the sideline club was that of Juron...

Hall of Fame induction is bittersweet moment for Ray Guy

Hall of Fame induction is bittersweet moment for Ray Guy

As the first punter ever elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Ray Guy recently reflected on his 14-year career in light of Saturday's induction ceremony. When Ray Guy was drafted by the Raiders in 1973, the safety/punter from Southern Miss didn't know much about the team. In fact, he wasn't really even sure where they played. "I did not know a lot about the Raiders in general," Guy said in a conference call Monday. "I knew they existed because I knew of the year they came into existence. So, when I got drafted by them, I had really not an idea about them and where they were and all...

McFadden: Raider Nation deserves my best

Darren McFadden is determined to make the most out of his one-year deal with the Raiders after having most of his tenure with the team wracked with injury and ineffectiveness. Throughout much of his time with the Oakland Raiders, running back Darren McFadden has been off the field for one reason or another. His injury list is as long as a San Jose phonebook, and it has left Raider fans disappointed and wondering what might have been for the team, which is an entirely different beast with a healthy and effective McFadden working his magic. He signed a one-year deal with Oakland in the...

Raiders add safety Jeremy Deering

Raiders add safety Jeremy Deering

The Raiders have announced they have signed free agent S Jeremy Deering. There was a roster spot available so no corresponding player release was needed. Deering is an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers. He originally signed with the Patriots but was waived following OTA's last May. He will be a safety but has played at several different positions including running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. He didn't switch to safety until his senior year. The 6-1, 209-pounder is an ideal candidate for special teams. He is a big, athletic all-around football player who returns kicks as well...

TJ Carrie showing rare maturity beyond that of typical rookie

When TJ Carrie entered the NFL draft, he was seen primarily as a return man. He was first team All-MAC as a return man and third team as a corner. So, it's understandable return specialist was where he was recognized the most while his cornerback abilities were secondary (so to speak). But that's not how it was supposed to be. He came to Ohio University as a cornerback and it was there where his coach got him into adding return specialist to his repertoire. "I definitely tried to harp myself on trying to play the cornerback position," said Carrie. "And I think the beauty of the college...

Raiders training camp wrap: Day 3

Raiders training camp wrap: Day 3

It was pads day! Well, it wasn't quite as exciting as all that. There were a few drills you wouldn't normally see but otherwise, it was all conditions normal. First up is the absences. Newly out was tight end Jake Murphy who suffered a concussion in yesterday's practice in a collision with linebacker Bojay Filimoeatu. He will have to go through the concussion protocol before he can return. Kaluka Maiava is still out with his hamstring injury. Returning to action was rookie fourth rounder, Keith McGill who was on the PUP list the first two practices with an ankle injury he sustained in the...

Menelik Watson eager to move on from frustrating rookie season

Last year's second round pick OL Menelik Watson had rough go of it for his rookie season. The injuries started early and kept him out often, a very frustrating experience for a raw athlete just trying to figure out the game. Finally 100% healthy again, the 2nd year player is focused and ready for action. As soon as last season was done Menelik became completely focused on moving forward. There was a lot to move on from for the talented Englishman. Not the least of which was controlling his frustration and preparing his body better. "I’m a powerful man and I have to control my temper a...
