2016 Raiders depth chart breakdown, 53-man roster projection, position battle: Tight end

The fourth edition in this series covers the tight ends as we fill out our projected Raiders 53-man roster. Wide receive and tight end were both upgraded prior to last season, both in free agency and the draft. Those acquisitions still lead their respective units, giving the offense some consistency and reliability it hadn't had in many years. Starters Clive Walford - 2nd year Lee Smith - 5th year Entering his second season with the team, Walford looks poised to be a big part of the team's offense. Even though he has been out all offseason after injuring his knee in an ATV accident, he's...

Rival Report 6/24: Ex-NFL TE Richard Gordon arrested for domestic assault, had AR-15 in car

In one of the more sad stories to come out this off-season, former journeyman NFL TE Richard Gordon has been arrested in Florida for domestic assault. Even scarier, he had an AR-15 assault rifle in his car with 2 magazines at the time of his arrest while he was allegedly on his way to a strip club where he had a previous altercation. Gordon was being held on a $6,000 bond after allegedly punching his girlfriend and kicking a car door into the arresting police officers arm and shoulder during his arrest. He supposedly was on his way to the Office strip club where he intended to shoot up the...

Raiders Las Vegas stadium proposal asking record taxpayer money, Clark County Commissioner strongly opposed

On Thursday when Raiders president Marc Badain objected to a new proposal from committee SNTIC chairman Steve Hill. The original plan had the Raiders and Las Vegas Sands Corp providing $750 million toward the new stadium project. Badain noted that was the 7th most ever provided by a team and private financier, which makes their proposal seem more than fair. That is unless you ask the obvious other question - where does the remaining $750 million being asked from public funding rank? The answer is it would be the most public funding proposed in NFL history, some $130 million more than the...

Raiders brass "not happy" with curve ball at SNTIC meeting in Las Vegas

The meeting with the SNTIC was held in Las Vegas today and of course it couldn't go smoothly. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss financing on various projects, and most importantly a potential new stadium that would facilitate the Raiders relocating there. Right from the start, the meeting was hijacked by a new alternative plan proposed by committee chairman Steve Hill which was introduced less than 24 hours ago. The introduction of this new plan did not sit well with County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, who argued it was too much to digest at such a late date. "I can't digest this in...

What '80s Raiders player would you add to today's roster?

The franchise fielded some of its most dominant teams and won two world championships in the '80s. Pick one athlete who would be the best addition to today's roster. The Raiders continued their winning ways into the 1980s. Tom Flores became the first Latino NFL head coach and he led the organization to a pair of Super Bowl victories over Philadelphia in 1980 and Washington in 1983. But the Raiders would not enjoy the overall stability during the '80s they had in the 1970s, as the team relocated to Los Angeles in 1982 and Al Davis engaged in open war (litigation) with the league. Still,...

Las Vegas is officially getting an NHL expansion team; What does it mean for Raiders?

While we're all here wondering if the Raiders would gain approval to become the first professional sports franchise in Las Vegas, the NHL swooped in and did it, announcing today they would be expanding to 31 teams and that new team will be playing in Las Vegas starting in the 2017-18 season. What exactly this means for the Raiders is debatable. First and foremost it clears away any notion that Vegas is not a viable place for a professional franchise. Whether it be the market itself or the legal gambling aspect that is omnipresent. In that respect, this move by the NHL could be just what...

2016 Raiders depth chart breakdown, 53-man roster projection, position battles: Running back

Next in our series examining the Raiders roster, we project who among the running backs will crack the final 53 as well as take a spot on the 10-man practice squad. Starters: Latavius Murray - 4th year Jamize Olawale (FB) - 5th year Returning as the feature back in this offense will be Latavius Murray following his first season as the full time starter in which he amassed 1070 yards rushing and made the Pro Bowl as an alternate. Olawale signed an extension last season which will keep him a Raider for a long time. He is considered the heir apparent to Marcel Reece who is entering the final...

DeAndre Washington should have significant impact on Raiders passing game

Deandre Washington may end up being a lot more than a third down back but he should have an instant impact on the Raiders offense, as a pass catcher out of the backfield. If the Raiders are going to take the AFC West, they are not only going to have to dethrone the Super Bowl Champions, Broncos, they also have to beat out the Chiefs. Both teams play suffocating man to man coverage, which gave the Raiders offense a lot of trouble last year. The Raiders have a talented receiving corps but against the quality of cover corners that they play in the AFC West, they will have to find other...

Raiders entering contract year, set to hit free agency in 2017

It's never  too early to start thinking about those players who are entering the final season of their career with the Raiders. For some of these players, the team will be considering extensions even before the season is over, as they did with Michael Crabtree last season. Here are those players who will have the team considering their future this season; Unrestricted Free Agents David Amerson (24) - He was claimed off waivers from Washington last season with two years left on his rookie contract. After a resurgence with the team last season, he will look to keep it going in his contract...

OPINION: Gimmicky "Color Rush" uniforms won't fly with Raider Nation

Any colors except Silver and Black would dishonor Raider tradition and the late Al Davis. Any alteration of the Raiders classic uniform at all rubs me the wrong way. The Silver & Black colors and shield logo transcend sports. They have a meaning unlike all others and are a way of life that includes credos such as "commitment to excellence," "pride and poise" and an inherent rebellious nature. So, when initial leaks of the 2016 "Color Rush" uniforms included a Raiders uniform with gold in it, I was not happy. This would suggest a throwback situation as the original Raiders uniform had gold...

What Raiders player from the 1960s would you add to the current roster?

The Oakland brain trust has assembled an dangerous 2016 roster, who could make it more so? The Oakland Raiders have a proud and storied history. The current roster, led by franchise quarterback Derek Carr and rising defensive star Khalil Mack appear to be on a mission to restore glory to the Silver and Black. But if you could add one player from each decade, who would it be? Let's begin with the 1960s. The parameters are simple. The player you select had to play in at least one regular season game from 1960 to 1969. Also, indicate which player, at the same or equivalent position, you would...

Raiders projected camp depth chart: Offense

Offseason training is now done for the Raiders and much was learned. The final portion of those offseason activities was minicamp, which the team attempts to mimic a training camp feel, which means it can also act as a nice preview of what we will see once the team takes the field for training camp on July 28 in Napa. Loaded with that information, here is my projected camp depth chart: Offense POS FIRST SECOND THIRD OTHER QB Derek Carr Matt McGloin Connor Cook RB Latavius Murray DeAndre Washington Taiwan Jones Jalen Richard Roy Helu, Jr. George Atkinson...

San Diego takes possession of longest title drought

Sunday night the Cleveland Cavaliers became NBA Champions with a hard fought win over the Golden State Warriors in game seven of the NBA Finals. In doing so they brought a championship to a city that hadn't had one in any major sport in 52 years. That win was 1964 when the Browns won the NFL Championship before the Super Bowl became a thing in 1967. Since then all major Cleveland sports teams have ended their seasons with a loss. That streak has now ended which means another city replaces it as the longest without a title in any major sport. That city is now San Diego. As San Diego Union...

NBA Finals game 7 open thread

Game seven of the NBA Finals tips off at 5:00pm Pacific time (8pm ET) tonight with the Cavaliers and Warriors facing off in Oakland. A champion will be crowned tonight. The NBA Finals were supposed to be over last week. With the Warriors up 3-1 in the series and headed back to Oakland where they rarely ever lose. There was one big problem -- they would have to do it without Draymond Green, who was suspended after a second shot to the nuts of an opposing player. This particular shot was provoked by Lebron James who stepped over Green. The easily provoked and always volatile Green responded...

If latest Color Rush design leak is true, it's far more palatable for Raiders

There's another supposed leak of the NFL's Color Rush jerseys for this season. And if it's true, the Raiders could look pretty badass when they face the Chiefs on Thursday Night December 8th. Just as fans would hope, and would only seem fitting, the color of choice would be black. These, AFAIK, is the official and final design color sheet for NFL Color Rush. pic.twitter.com/4otQMyv9xN — NFL Leaks (@NFL_Leaks) June 17, 2016 There is no question whether the Raiders are participating in the Color Rush jerseys this season. All teams are. The only question has been what those jerseys...

Unnamed scouts with harsh criticism of Shilique Calhoun's heart, toughness

With the Raiders finally getting Shilique Calhoun under contract, we looked back at what scouts were saying about him pre-draft. And the results were kinda messed up. Deciding where a prospect belongs on a draft board can be dirty business. They get poked and prodded about every aspect of their physical and mental makeup as teams attempt to get the process down to as much of a science as they can. In doing so, some unnamed scouts had some downright nasty things to say about Shilique Calhoun pre-draft, who the Raiders would end up taking with their third round pick. As you can imagine, a...

Amari Cooper coming out of his shell, finding "comfort" zone with Derek Carr, Raiders offense

Today Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper turned 22 years old. Entering just his second season in the NFL, he feels pretty good about his life right about now as well as his situation as the number one receiver on an up and coming Raiders squad. As a 21-year-old, he accomplished quite a bit. He's already had a 1000-yard season (1070)  and made a trip to the Pro Bowl, even in a season which saw him hampered by a nagging ankle injury in the second half. He shared all of that with his quarterback, Derek Carr, including the trip to Hawaii. Now having completed offseason training, his outlook is...

Rival Report 6/17: NFL VP of International believes NFL will have 1 or 2 international teams by 2026

There is a lot of debate about the logistics of having international teams in the NFL, specifically when traveling across oceans to far away countries like the UK. If you believe that the VP of International for the NFL, those issues will have been figured out by 2026. Mark Waller is a world traveler and important figure in the international affairs of the National Football League, and in a recent interview with ESPN he stated his belief that the NFL will have 1 or 2 international teams within 10 years. "I think we will have at least one or two franchises outside of the U.S. I think we'll...

NFL reportedly extends, expands new practice squad rules

The past two seasons the NFL opened added two spots to each team's 8-man practice squad, bringing the number of practice squad players to 10. That new rule was up for extension this offseason and the NFL and NFLPA have mutually agreed to keep the number at 10 for at least another two seasons, according to ESPN's Mark Dominic. With the initial practice squad expansion, the additional two spots could be filled by players with two accrued NFL seasons. All others were not allowed to have an accrued NFL season (more than 8 games active). The new deal will double the number of players who may...

Interview with Raiders rookie OL Oni Omoile

Oakland Raiders free agent rookie offensive lineman Oni Omoile took some time out of his schedule this week to answer some questions from yours truly. Lately a couple Raider rookies, long snapper Andrew East and offensive guard Oni Omoile took some time out from their minicamp schedule to do Reddit Ask Me Anything threads, which we at Silver and Black Pride covered here and here. However, Oni Omoile was kind enough to also field a few extra questions from RaiderDamus himself. I kept the interview relatively short because training camp is exhausting, but the answers I got were extremely...
