Raiders 2015 Free Agency Wishlist: Defensive tackle

Defensive tackle is one of those positions on the Raiders that could use a long term solution but isn't desperate for attention right at the moment should the team be unable to find a suitable free agent. Antonio Smith played well last season and actually got stronger as the season went on. He is expected back for a second season, though if the Raiders were to go big in free agency, they could release him with not dead money left behind. Beside Smith last season was rookie Justin Ellis who played well enough to earn the starting job, though there are upgrades out there. Here are a few names...

2015 NFL free agency: Raiders release LaMarr Woodley

The move isn't a surprise. Woodley looked to be a shell of his former self in Oakland, and if he's offered a contract in 2015, it will be for the league minimum. The Steelers' fourth-highest salary cap contributor is unemployed. The Oakland Raider released defensive end LaMarr Woodley Sunday after a biceps injury cut short the season of the player they signed in free agency. Woodley had five tackles for the Raiders, the other team he's played for in his eight-year NFL career along with the Steelers. Woodley was a post-June 1 release for the Steelers in 2014, saving the team cap space last...

Raiders to release LaMarr Woodley this week

In one of the more expected reports, LaMarr Woodley will be released by the Raiders this week according to a source close to CSN Bay Area's Fallon Smith. Woodley is perhaps the most expected cut of all this off-season. He was cut by the Steelers last offseason and signed to a 2-year $12 million deal by the Raiders. He played in six games before being lost for the season with a biceps injury. Previous to his injury, he was basically irrelevant in the lineup. He started all six games and had a total of 5 tackles (3 solo). His replacement, Benson Mayowa, eclipsed that total after one...

Raiders 2015 Free Agency Wishlist: Defensive end

As I mentioned when putting together the wishlist for at wide receiver, it ran pretty evenly in the fan poss as the Raiders number one need with an 80% desperate need. Again, I agree wholeheartedly. And over the past three years, they have not put near enough emphasis on fixing the position. The only decent defensive end they have had in the past few years was Lamarr Houston and he left as a free agent last offseason. An attempt was made last offseason to temporarily fill the positions with Justin Tuck and Lamarr Woodley and it didn't work out too well. Tuck played fairly well and Woodley...

Raiders 2015 Free Agency Wishlist: Center

Here we are. At the center position. One of the few positions the Raiders should be set but may not be due to the uncertainty surrounding Stefen Wisniewski. He and the team have not agreed to terms on a new contract and if that doesn't happen, he will hit free agency. If that happens, they would be left with just 31-year-old utility interior lineman Kevin Boothe on the team. That's not a favorable situation. These free agent centers would present a far better situation for the Raiders: Rodney Hudson One of the best young centers in the NFL last year and he has gotten better the past couple...

Two recent 1000-yard wide receivers cut, adding options for Raiders

The cuts just keep on comin' this offseason. Today, two former 1000-yard receivers were let go, adding to what looks to be a pretty abundant group of free agent wide receivers. The Falcons cut Harry Douglas and the Dolphins let go of Brian Hartline. Both receivers are just a season removed from surpassing the 1000-yard mark and both are still reasonably young. Hartline is 28 and Douglas is 30. Now is when I remind everyone the Raiders haven't had a 1000-yard receiver since 2005 and have had just one since 2002. Hartline is especially intriguing. He had two-straight seasons of at...

Raiders 2015 Free Agency Wishlist: Guard

Good guard, the Raiders need one badly. Austin Howard was terrible most of last season in a failed attempt to switch the former tackle to guard and that plus the poor play of Menelik Watson at right tackle has caused them to move Howard to right tackle. Now they simply don't have a viable starter. Unless you count Kevin Boothe, but I think they would rather have him as the fallback option. Offensive line was the focus last offseason when they signed Howard in the first place and now it must once again be a priority. That being said, they really have three good free agent options to fill...

Raiders release Tyvon Branch

Coming into the offseason, the Raiders had a decision to make with regard to Tyvon Branch. He was coming off two-straight seasons in which he was placed on injured reserve and was to be a $9.6 million salary cap hit this coming season. And Thursday, that decision has been made -- Tyvon Branch has been cut. Not long after the Jason La Canfora first reported the news, Branch said his goodbyes It was a blessing to play for the raiders wearing that shield was special to me... Raiders must spend more than any team in NFL to meet salary floor

I have talked a lot about the Raiders being behind on their need to meet the league's salary floor requirements as laid out by the CBA. Each time the discussion of how much money the Raiders have to spend under the salary cap comes up, it must be mentioned that they need to spend nearly all of it to meet the cap floor of 89%. Now at the halfway point of the four-year window from 2013-16 in which teams must meet that 89% league minimum, the NFLPA has released their figures as to what percentage of salary available each team has spent over the past two years. Those findings as laid out by...

Raiders 2015 Free Agency Wishlist: Tight end

Coming off the Free Agent Wishlist for the wide receivers, we go into another position that has been bereft of top talent for some time -- tight end. Since Zach Miller left as a free agent to head to Seattle following the 2010 season, the Raiders have not been able to fill the position with a legitimate weapon. Not to sell Mychal Rivera short; he has performed fairly well, especially considering he was a sixth round pick. He's just as advertised. He will make some catches but he has serious problems in the blocking department. To be as poor a blocker as Rivera is, he would have to be an...

AJ Hawk cut by Packers, viable option for Raiders?

The hits just keep on coming today with teams cutting players, mostly in salary cap moves. Hawk was designated as a failed physical, but that doesn't mean a whole lot especially with even training camp so far away. How much interest should the Raiders have in Hawk? Let's see. You won't find a player more durable than A.J. Hawk. He has missed just two games in his nine-year career in Green Bay and he has been their full time starter that entire time. He was a weakside linebacker his first three seasons in the NFL with seven games played at middle linebacker and the past six seasons he has...

Reggie Bush cut by Lions, viable option for Raiders?

One of the more exciting players in the NFL over the past few years has been Reggie Bush. He is now a free agent after being cut by the Detroit Lions. Could he be a good addition to the Raiders? Let's see. Since spending the first five seasons of his career in New Orleans as the number two overall pick, he has had a two-year stop in Miami, and a two-year stop in Detroit. Now 30-years old -- the widely believed age running backs begin to go downhill quickly -- he is a free agent once again. Bush has had basically three good seasons in the NFL from 2011-13. He was at his most durable in those...

Jacoby Jones cut by Ravens, viable option for Raiders?

Cuts are coming in across the league today. The first one was that of Ravens wide receiver/kick returner, Jacoby Jones. How viable an option is he for the Raiders? As a receiver, he doesn't offer a whole lot. He is a complementary guy who break off a big play from time to time. Normally he can provide around 30 catches for 500 yards and a couple touchdowns, though he is coming off a career worst 9 catches on 18 targets despite appearing in all 16 games. His value has always been more as a return specialist where he was named All Pro in 2012 with a combined 3 return touchdowns. One of those...

Raiders Free Agency Wishlist: Wide receiver

Neck and neck for the most desperate need on the Raiders in S&BP polls was defensive end and wide receiver. Both were hovering around 80% as a desperate need and I couldn't agree more. The Raiders' utter lack of elite wide receiver talent has been a long and tiresome struggle. It's hard to watch, to be honest. If you like good football, watching the Raiders' wide receiving corps has not been worth watching. The statistic that the last 1000-yard receiver was Randy Moss (1005) in 2005 doesn't even cover the futility.Overall, his time in Oakland was a cautionary tale. One most would just as...

If Chargers and Raiders move to Los Angeles, who stays in the AFC West?

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders seeking a new stadium could eventually result in a shakeup of the AFC West. Everyone knows the St. Louis Rams are making their run at the Los Angeles market after owner Stan Kroenke committed to building a stadium there. The Chargers and Raiders recently revealed their own proposal to move to Los Angeles and share a stadium together. IF that scenario happened with both teams moving to LA and sharing a stadium, one of those teams would likely have to move to the NFC. As Sports Illustrated's Peter King has pointed out, with LA as the No. 2 market,...

Inglewood City Council gives NFL Stadium go ahead

The Inglewood city council unanimously approved the building of an NFL stadium on the site of the old Hollywood Park Casino Tuesday evening. The land is owned by Stockbridge Capital, of which Rams owner Stan Kroenke is a part. They had begun clearing ground on the site just two weeks ago and were moving quickly toward gaining approval to build a new NFL stadium on the site. And the race began. A week ago, the Raiders and Chargers - no doubt in response to Kroenke moving full speed ahead on getting his LA stadium built - became unlikely bedfellows by going in together to purchase a...

Raiders add Cal Bears kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, what could it mean for Sebastian Janikowski?

The Raiders have welcomed back former Cal Bears kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, who spent a few days with the Raiders last preseason and kicked two 47-yard field goals in their final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Normally such a signing doesn't hold much meaning. It is written off a a 'camp leg'. But this one may mean something more. Consider a few details. First off, the Raiders officially announced it with press release and tweet and everything. That seems a bit much for a camp leg. The Oakland Raiders have signed free-agent K Giorgio Tavecchio. http://t.co/kel431cg9R...

2015 Al Davis Memorial All-Combine Freak Team Offense top performers

The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine is complete, which means it's time to put together this year's Al Davis Memorial All-Combine Freak Team. It is as it sounds. A team put together with the top athletes at each position. Al Davis put a lot of stock in player performances at the combine with special consideration for 40-yard-dash times. That's why this team bears his name. Here is this year's team; beginning with the offense: QB Marcus Mariota, Oregon His 4.52 40-yard-dash was tops among QB's at the combine. He also had the best 10-yard split (1.57) and 3-cone (6.87) and was in the top three in...
