Ranking potential landing spots for Shaun Hill

Matt Maiocco's Instant 49ers | Santa Rosa Press Democrat — We don't know exactly when it's going to happen, but it is likely to happen soon: 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill will become ex-49ers quarterback Shaun Hill.   As reported here in the wee hours, the 49ers have given Hill permission to seek a trade. The club is apparently waiting on the arrival of the official, signed David Carr contract before making its next move.

Closer look at 'restricted' market

Matt Maiocco's Instant 49ers | Santa Rosa Press Democrat — Some of the best free agents on the market are considered untouchable because of the level of compensation that a new team would have to provide. Draft picks are valuable currency in the non-salary cap NFL, as teams that draft well have a better chance of creating a winning nucleus while adhering to their budgets.

How Pitts fits ...

49ers Blog | Sacramento Bee — It's so early in the process that talking about how free-agent guard Chester Pitts would fit in San Francisco would be terribly premature ... On that note, here's how Pitts would fit on the 49ers: I spoke with John McClain,...

Matt Maiocco's Instant 49ers | Santa Rosa Press Democrat — The 49ers have given backup quarterback Shaun Hill permission to seek a trade, said a source late Thursday, just days after the club reached a contract agreement with free-agent David Carr to take Hill's place on the depth chart.

Regardless what's said, there will be 49ers QB competition

Matt Maiocco's Instant 49ers | Santa Rosa Press Democrat — When I asked 49ers coach Mike Singletary (several times) at the NFL Scouting Combine whether Alex Smith would be the team's starting quarterback in 2010, he finally said yes.   "The thing for me is I'm always going to use words like 'probably' and all those other things because I like competition," Singletary said. "I like guys knowing that they're always going to compete. But I feel very comfortable in saying Alex Smith is our starting quarterback going forward."

Bye-bye Becht

Niners Insider | San Francisco Chronicle — First Kurt Warner and now tight end Anthony Becht ? Warner infamously went on a free-agent visit to the 49ers last year only to have God tell him 20 minutes in, that he belonged in Arizona. No word on whether Becht got the same feeling, but after his visit to the 49ers, Becht accepted a...

  • TE Chris Baker in Seattle, staying an extra night Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times Tight end Chris Baker is visiting Seattle Friday, and staying an extra night on his visit. The price of tight ends in this market was demonstrated by Ben Watson's three-year deal for $6 million guaranteed, $12 million overall. There are other teams interested in Baker so we'll see what happens over the weekend.
  • Seahawks still talking with tight end Chris Baker Talkin' Hawks | Seattle Post-Intelligencer Now eight days into the free-agency period, the Seattle Seahawks have had some hooks in the water -- and their seaplane at the dock -- but have yet to land a single fish.

  • Shhhh, people working Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic  Arizona Cardinals update: Things are quiet today. Maybe, as they say in old westerns, too quiet. I have not word on negotiations with the agents for linebackers Larry Foote and Joey Porter. I have heard the Cardinals remain interested in Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst and likely will talk to his agent this week. Whitehurst is restricted and would cost the Cardinals a third-round pick if the Chargers didn't match. Whitehurst hasn't thrown a pass in a game since being drafted in 2006 out of Clemson, but the Cardinals might determine he's a better risk than drafting a quarterb...
  • Hawks in the hunt for QB Whitehurst Seahawks Insider | Tacoma News-Tribune Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting that the Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals are in the hunt to secure the services of San Diego restricted free agent Charlie Whitehurst. The four-year pro visited both teams, but hasn't saw any regular season action as the third-string quarterback for the Chargers. San Diego tendered [...]
  • Patience not necessarily a virtue in free agency Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times The Seahawks lost out on tight end Ben Watson Friday morning when he signed a three-year deal with Cleveland.Could running back Mike Bell be next? That's an increasing possibility. It has been three days and counting since Bell visited the Seahawks, and Seattle still hasn't made a move to sign the restricted free agent from New Orleans.Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Some considered Seattle the sleeping giant of this year's free-agent signing period. The franchise had the league's richest owner, and a new coach who was relentless in his accumulation of talent at USC. Some thought the Seahawks would go m...
  • So much for L.J. Raiders Silver and Black Blog | San Francisco Chronicle Former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed with the Redskins, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, which means he won't be visiting the Raiders on Sunday as reported by profootballtalk.com. That's fine just the same. If the Raiders really needed a veteran running back, they could have just...

  • Basketball: Latest bracket projection BearTalk | Oakland Tribune Here is this morning’s NCAA Tournament bracket projection from ESPN.com’s Joe Lunardi. Cal is a No. 7 seed in this bracket, set to play Virginia Tech at Buffalo. Looming in the next round, likely West Virginia. But maybe . . . Todd Bozeman and Morgan State. If this came to pass, we’d never again be able [...]
