One can argue that the 49ers quarterback’s demonstration — sitting during the national anthem Friday before a preseason game — was ill-timed, offensive and disrespectful. But if he had taken a less controversial approach, would you have noticed?

Thomas, who was acquired in a trade for Jeremy Kerley, never appeared in a regular-season game for San Francisco.
Two days after he sparked a national conversation by sitting during the playing of the national anthem, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick spoke for 18 minutes at his locker today and explained his controversial stance. Why did you choose to do this? People don't realize what's really going on in this country. People aren't being held accountable for. Is this something that's evolved in your mind? When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand. Police...

First, is what he is protesting legitimate? And secondly, does the protest hurt anyone? The answer to the first question is yes. Black and Brown populations get routinely

San Francisco 49ers will reportedly get Jeremy Kerley, a receiver and return specialist for offensive lineman Brandon Thomas.
Kerley, a fifth-round pick in 2011, joins Torrey Smith as the 49ers’ only wideout with more than 36 career catches. The move comes after slot receiver Bruce Ellington sustained a hamstring injury in a preseason loss to the Packers on Friday. Wide receivers DeAndre Smelter (hamstring) and rookie Bryce Treggs (MCL) are also injured, and Eric Rogers (ACL) was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Thomas, a 2014 third-round pick, didn’t play a snap last year after he missed his first season with a torn ACL he sustained prior to the draft.

A day after 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem, there were no reports of an NFL player following his lead in any of the six preseason games played Saturday. After the Eagles played the Colts, Philadelphia safety Malcolm Jenkins, 28, who has routinely spoken about race relations during his eight-year career, explained his decision to stay standing. In July, Jenkins and other teammates met with Philadelphia police commissioner Richard Ross Jr. to discuss ways to improve the relationship between the police and community. While he’s not inspired to...

No matter how you feel about Colin Kaepernick's decision not to stand during the national anthem, burning his jersey does not seem like a proportional response.
After tumbling from starter to third-stringer, 49ers cornerback Kennth Acker was traded to the Chiefs for a conditional draft pick. After spending his first NFL season on injured reserve with a foot injury, Acker had three interceptions in 13 starts last year. The 49ers began paring down their roster by releasing wide receiver Jerome Simpson, offensive lineman Ian Silberman and seven other players. The decision to part with Simpson, 30, was a bit surprising considering he and Torrey Smith were the only wideouts on the roster with more than 36 career catches. Silberman, a sixth-round pick,...
