ESPN NFL power rankings: Brian Hoyer seems like a pretty ideal bridge QB, all things considered

The 49ers and Brian Hoyer are not getting a lot of love this offseason, but the team is in a good position for the short term. The San Francisco 49ers were as active as anybody in free agency, and while they made some significant additions, they still have a lot of work in front of them. They still have to figure out their long-term solution at quarterback, and they only made a couple moves to address a woefully bad defense. Back after the Super Bowl, ESPN released a set of way-too-early power rankings. They ranked the 49ers No. 31. Two months later, the 49ers remain No. 31. Here’s what...

49ers post-free-agency mock draft 2.0

Now that I realize the Niners are making a run at the playoffs, these are the picks I think they will make. Remember, this is a fluid process. Round 1, pick No. 2:  Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State. The best corner to come out of college since Marcus Peters in 2015. Round 2, pick No. 34: […]

49ers still have work to do in offseason — here’s the list

The 49ers’ focus during free agency has been signing veterans on offense. This is smart. Kyle Shanahan’s system is complicated. Young players take more than half a season to learn it. So, by signing veterans — especially ones who have played for Shanahan and already know his system — the team eliminated the learning curve. […]

Donald Trump chides Colin Kaepernick again at rally

Donald Trump might have other concerns than what he reads online about Colin Kaepernick. Nevertheless, he brought up Kaepernick during a rally recently in Kentucky. During the campaign, Trump criticized Kaepernick for failing to stand for the national anthem. In the video above, you can see what Trump said about the 49ers free agent quarterback. Kaepernick opted out of his deal earlier this month and is still a free agent. Other quarterbacks such as Mike Glennon (Bears), Brian Hoyer (49ers), and Matt Barkley (49ers) have signed despite having worse careers statistically than Kaepernick....

There's no cure for ALS, the disease former 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark recently revealed he's battling. There's no way to even diagnose it. That's done by eliminating maladies with …

Dwight Clark’s diagnosis hits hard

If you’re of a certain age, the news hit like a punch in the stomach Sunday night. There are about 6,000 cases of the brutal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosed each year, and the average age at diagnosis is 55. On January 10, 1982, Clark rose high in the sky in the back of the Candlestick end zone, over Dallas defender Everson Walls, and with his fingertips corralled a pass from a scrambling Joe Montana, and held on for the touchdown. With that touchdown (and some late game defensive heroics) the 49ers were headed to their first ever Super Bowl. The touchdown changed...
