Canadiens Preseason Post-Mortems Revisited

Habs Eyes On The Prize — Prior to the season, I wrote this piece which featured a list of things I thought would need to go right for the Canadiens to be successful this season, and a list of factors that could could derail their efforts. Now that the season is over and our site is back at full strength, let's see how accurate the lists were. Potential Pitfalls 1. Andrei Markov re-injures his knee, or his ankle, or any other part of his body, and misses most of the season. To the surprise of many, Markov was able to suit up for all 48 of the Canadiens' regular season games, as well as all 5 in the playoffs, ...

Markov Nominated for the Masterton (and other links)

Habs Eyes On The Prize — It's certainly been a long arduous journey from the operating room to the dressing room for Andrei Markov. The Russian defenceman has undergone two ligament reconstruction surgeries in his right knee since 2009 and played in a mere 20 games over the past two seasons. As it stands now, Markov has been in the lineup for all 45 of Montreal's games this year, ranks first on the team in average total ice time per game, is sporting a 52.4% zone start adjusted Corsi For percentage, and ranks fifth in points among NHL defencemen. Although he's no longer the best defencemen on the team, it's cl...

Back to Bourqueness, Eliminated Emelin, Terrible Titles (and other links)

Habs Eyes On The Prize — Just as the Montreal Canadiens were getting ready for the return of Rene Bourque, who skated on a regular line in practice today and is expected to draw into the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Capitals, the Habs have learned that top-4 blueliner Alexei Emelin is done for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee. The minute-munching Russian, who has spent his season to Andrei Markov's right, ranked third on the team in EV TOI/G and 2nd among D in CF%, with greater on-ice numbers than off-ice numbers. Emelin was really coming into his own this season and his absence will ...

NHL Trade Deadline - Ryan O'Byrne acquired by the Maple Leafs

Habs Eyes On The Prize — In a bid to corner the market on former Habs who were propped up by Andrei Markov in his prime, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Ryan O'Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche. I'm assuming that a trade for Sheldon Souray is in the works, maybe even Craig Rivet. O'Byrne was acquired in exchange for a 4th round pick, and will hopefully give Randy Carlyle an excuse to sent Jake Gardiner back down to the AHL. O'Byrne played extreme tough minutes last season in a sacrificial role, but this year he's seen lighter zone starts at just 48% and and middling competition, yet remained the Avalanch...

Bruins Blog | Providence Journal — By Corey BourassaBOSTON (AP) -- Andrei Markov tied it with 8.2 seconds left in regulation, and Brendan Gallagher scored the only shootout goal to give the Montreal Canadiens a 6-5 victory over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. The victory snapped a tie for the second-most points in the Eastern Conference, giving the Canadiens 47. They lead the Northeast Division by a point over the Bruins. Harrold “fine” after being cut on shot that hit his helmet; Pesonen enjoyed NHL debut

Fire & Ice | Bergen Record — Devils defenseman Peter Harrold said he was “fine” after the game after being struck in the front of his helmet with a shot by defenseman Andrei Markov 56 seconds into the third period of tonight’s 2-1 loss to the Canadiens. Harrold was cut on the forehead and had blood on the inside of his visor when he got up and skated to the locker room to be stitched up by the doctor. “It hit the front of the helmet and pushed the screws in,” Harrold said. “I thought originally it hit the top and maybe snuck through the visor, but I think it was just a pressure cut.” Harrold said he received “a handful...
