Canadiens vs. Oilers third period thread

The Canadiens have their biggest lead in ... a long time. It's 4-0 heading into the second period. The first five minutes of the second period we're played pretty tightly, with only five total shot attempts, 3-2 in favour of the Oilers. The Oilers drew a penalty, with Devante Smith Pelly getting called for an elbow on Eric Gryba. Zack Kassian came to the defense of his teammate, resulting in coincidental roughing minors for Kassian and Smith-Pelly. Ben Scrivens stood tall on the subsequent Oilers' powerplay, and beyond once it was five on five again. The goalie's strong work would for the...

Canadiens vs. Oilers second period thread

The Canadiens lead 2-0 heading into the second period. The Habs did not do very well to contain the Oilers early on, allowing them six shot attempts within the first 1:17. Within the first five minutes of the game, Connor McDavid's line had created six shot attempts of the Oilers' total eight. Ben Scrivens made a couple of key saves to keep it even while the Habs got their game going. This would end up being key, as the Habs went on the powerplay and moved the puck around, freezing the Oilers with a lot of traffic in front of Cam Talbot. Tomas Plekanec blasted a one-timer that was deflected...

Cult of Hockey: Oilers easily winning Kassian for Scrivens trade

The early returns on the Zack Kassian for Ben Scrivens trade? Edmonton is easily winning the deal. Kassian has played strong physical hockey for Edmonton, stood up for his teammates, and exhibited a high degree of skill as a third-line player.  In eight games he’s got two goals and four points. He’s only played 108 […]

Canadiens vs. Sabres second period thread

The Habs trail 1-0 heading into the second period. The Habs had started to lay the first blocks of their game-plan when Marcus Foligno broke in on Ben Scrivens and scored on the Sabres' first shot of the game. The quick-strike by the Sabres didn't deter the Habs, who continued to pursue an elusive and well-earned goal. The Habs led 9-2 in shots on net by the midway of the first period, and were starting to stir things up in front of Robin Lehner. The Sabres began to respond, finally getting some shots through on Ben Scrivens who ended up with ten recorded saves by the end of the first...

Jacob de la Rose, Ben Scrivens in, Daniel Carr out vs Blue Jackets

The last game before the All-Star break will see Ben Scrivens get a chance for his first win as a Hab Daniel Carr missed the last two periods with a lower body injury and with Jacob de la Rose a healthy scratch for the last few games, they didn't need to call anyone up for one game before the All-Star break. Ben Scrivens will get the start for the Canadiens after Mike Condon allowed four goals against Columbus last night. #canadiens Jacob De La Rose, Ben Scrivens in, Daniel Carr out vs #bluejackets — Renaud Lavoie (@renlavoietva) January 26, 2016 The moves shouldn't come as a...

Canadiens vs. Blackhawks third period thread

The Habs are down 3-1 heading into the third period. Torrey Mitchell was sent off for tripping 1:13 into the second period, allowing the Blackhawks to establish an attack on the powerplay that they followed through for the first seven minutes of the period where they had six shot attempts to the Canadiens' three. Ben Scrivens was solid making a number of key saves to allow the Canadiens to get some form of offensive-zone presence going. This is a really defensive game from the Habs who are focusing more on managing the Blackhawks' offensive weapons than pouring on the offensive...

James Reimer rusty but reliable in Maple Leafs return

James Reimer rusty but reliable in Maple Leafs return

All told, Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer was pleased with his long-awaited return to the net, stopping 39 of the 41 shots he faced Thursday in Toronto's 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Instant analysis: Max Friberg brings another offensive weapon for IceCaps

Dustin Tokarski became extraneous with the arrival of Ben Scrivens The Montreal Canadiens proceeded to make a minor trade with the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday afternoon, by trading goalie Dustin Tokarski for Swedish forward Max Friberg. In many ways it is unsurprising to see Tokarski get dealt, as the once upstart backup who claimed Peter Budaj's spot with an outstanding performance in the 2014 semifinals against the Rangers, most notably robbing Martin St. Louis on various occasions with spectacular saves, slowly saw his stock fall until he in turn lost the backup role this season to Mike...
