Penalties defending Sidney Crosby frustrate Islanders

NewsdayBrian Strait took two penalties against Sidney Crosby in Game 3. The first, a hooking call early in the third, was the sort of call a player of Crosby's stature will get -- it wasn't much of a hook, but all eyes are on No. 87.

Game 1 a success: Pens score early, often to beat Islanders

PensBurgh — Game 1 sets the tone for a playoff series, and what a message the Pittsburgh Penguins sent tonight. Brian Strait took a penalty early in the game and Jarome Iginla took a slap shot that hit Islander goalie Evgeni Nabokov in the head. It might not have hurt him (he'd stay in the game) but it definitely seemed to rattle the goalie (obviously) and Beau Bennett would score the first game of the playoffs on the power play by sneaking in and throwing a shot up of Nabokov's shoulder just 3:30 into the game. From the the Pens never looked back. Ten game minutes later, Pascal Dupuis made it 2...

Islanders Bits: Brian Strait out 6-8 weeks; Flyers post-mortem; Moment of Nabby

Lighthouse Hockey — The New York Islanders get right back at it tonight in Ottawa, with both teams playing the second end of a traveling back-to-back. The Senators won via shootout in New Jersey yesterday afternoon. (You know what happened to the Isles.) So since the Isles essentially took yesterday off, they should be the better rested team. Before getting to tonight's game though, some additional coverage from yesterday's atrocity plus more: Brian Strait and that really painful looking crash into the boards? Broken ankle, 6-8 weeks. Which could mean the season for him. (Aside: Coliseum ice, or pure fl...

Ben Lovejoy traded to Anaheim

PensBurgh — For months we all knew the Pittsburgh Penguins had too many depth NHL defensemen. They lost Brian Strait on waivers to the New York Islanders last month, and yesterday they cleared a little more space by dealing Ben Lovejoy to the Anaheim Ducks for a 5th round pick in 2014. The reasons are obvious: Lovejoy was a decent depth guy, but younger guys like Simon Despres and Robert Bortuzzo have flashed more in games and shown that they can handle NHL ice-time, rendering Lovejoy an excess piece. Further, the Pens are at a 23 man roster limit with Matt Niskanen on injured reserve, and when h...

Islanders fall to Devils, 3-0

Newsday — There's no doubt that the Islanders thought they got a raw deal on Brian Strait's charging call late in the third period of a scoreless game with the Devils on Sunday, a game that wasn't scoreless for long. Steve Bernier got a good bounce, right to his stick with Evgeni Nabokov out of position, and the Devils scored with 3:54 to play.
