Montreal Canadiens: Going off the board at the draft can be worth it

If the Montreal Canadiens chose to go off the board with their third-overall pick at the NHL Draft, they wouldn’t be the first team to do it. Taking risks can go one of two ways in the NHL. Grade Niemi’s and Lindgren’s season performance

Grade Niemi’s and Lindgren’s season performance

The secondary netminders were out in full force last season. Catch up on this week’s articles, and grade their performance. With Carey Price playing just 49 games last season, it’s a lucky thing he had a few good men to have his back. Three disastrous starts with the Pittsburgh Penguins and two with the Florida Panthers had 34-year-old Antti Niemi concerned about his future in the NHL. That is, until Marc Bergevin swooped in and scooped him up off waivers. With 19 starts for the Montreal Canadiens, he ended up going from the worst stretch of his career to the highest save percentage...

Who should be the Canadiens backup in 2018-19?

Who should be the Canadiens backup in 2018-19?

Two cases, one vote. Have your say! The Montreal Canadiens are an organization blessed with goaltending depth. From the NHL starter down to the ECHL and NCAA level, the Habs have few worries in net. While the position may have lacked statistical brilliance from the top down in 2017-18, it remains an area of strength for a franchise with plenty of holes to fill elsewhere. With no lack of suitors for a starting job at every level, though, it means tough decisions will have to be made when the players return for training camp. The spotlight between the pipes, of course, belongs to Carey Price,...

Links: An outlier season for Carey Price

In today’s links, Carey Price’s annus horribilis should just be an outlier, revisiting Lars Eller’s departure from the Canadiens, and what is the real value of a draft pick that is unlikely to yield a bona fide star player? Montreal Canadiens news and notes Carey Price’s dismal 2017-18 season was likely an outlier. [Montreal Gazette] Regardless of what Habs fans may be feeling watching Lars Eller rise to the occasion for the Washington Capitals, the problem was never the price Marc Bergevin fetched for the Dane, but rather the price he paid for Andrew Shaw. The recent history of the Canadiens’ backup position

The recent history of the Canadiens’ backup position

The backup job has been a game of hot potato since Carey Price was first handed the starter’s role. Carey Price has been cemented as the starter for the Canadiens since Jaroslav Halak was traded in 2010, ending a three-year competition between the two goaltenders to become Cristobal Huet’s successor. The backup role has been held by many different goaltenders, starting with Alex Auld, who was acquired by Pierre Gauthier quickly on the first day of free agency, signing a one-year contract for $1,000,000 for the 2010-11 season. Other options considered by the Habs for the role were...

Lindgren’s strong career start gives Habs peace of mind for the future

Lindgren’s strong career start gives Habs peace of mind for the future

Signed as an undrafted free agent, Lindgren has made it clear he has an NHL pedigree. Charlie Lindgren has been in the Montreal Canadiens organization for a little over two full seasons now, signing as an undrafted NCAA free agent at the end of the 2015-16 season. In the one game he played that year, he stopped 26 of 28 shots against the Carolina Hurricanes and looked right at home doing it. He played just two NHL games the following year where he posted two wins, a 1.48 goals-against average, and .949 save percentage, once again looking like a young player getting ready for NHL action. In...
