A (very) early projection of the Flyers opening night lineup

Things are looking pretty darn good folks! With the acquisition of former, now-current Flyer, James van Riemsdyk, the Philadelphia Flyers have greatly improved their top six. In turn, this has their bottom six looking much more powerful than it was last season. Although, that’s not really saying a whole lot, is it? So since it appears the Flyers won’t be making too many more moves before the start of the 2018-2019 NHL season, let’s take a look at what could be the team’s opening night roster in Las Vegas. The NHL awards were given out last night in Vegas, and the only Flyer who looked to be a serious threat to take home an individual award came up just short, as Sean Couturier’s first-ever Selke nomination ended with him finishing second in the voting. But the Flyers’ captain and best player got some recognition as well, and we learned just how close he was to ending up as a finalist to be the league’s most valuable player. Claude Giroux finished fourth in voting for the Hart Trophy, given...

Making a case for Sean Couturier to win the Selke Trophy

Making a case for Sean Couturier to win the Selke Trophy

Typing that headline made me oh so happy. Sean Couturier had a season that virtually none of us were expecting. He finally cracked the 40 point mark and then decided to tack on another 36, giving him an amazing breakthrough 76 point year. While he benefited from playing on a line with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek for most of the beginning of the year, and no one is denying that certainly helped him, one can absolutely make the argument that he helped Giroux’s game as well. Couturier lightened Giroux’s workload by assuming the center role on the line, and with his elite hockey sense,...
