The Rangers have absolutely nothing to gain or lose (other than injuries) in tonight’s game at the Bell Centre against the Canadiens in the regular-season finale for both squads. The Rangers are locked into second place in the Metropolitan Division and may find out today who they’ll face in the first round (almost certainly starting Thursday at Madison Square Garden). The Flyers can clinch third place with a win at Pittsburgh this afternoon. So coach Alain Vigneault will give seemingly-indestructible defenseman Dan Girardi the game off (meaning he’ll play 81 of 82 regular-season games)...

Approaching Dan Girardi’s locker stall after Friday night’s 4-3 loss to the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the question to be asked was a simple one: Did the way the Rangers played, particularly defensively, serve as any kind of eye-opener in terms of how they needed to play during this four-game road trip. Granted, a couple of minutes before, Girardi’s defense partner, Ryan McDonagh, branded it a “sloppy” defensive effort.
