Thoughts on Thursday: The Leadership Core, Sophomore Slumps, and Expectations

Thoughts on Thursday: The Leadership Core, Sophomore Slumps, and Expectations

1. One aspect of the New York Rangers’ offseason that may have gone unnoticed is how the team’s leadership core has underdone drastic changes since being upset by the Ottawa Senators back in May. Dan Girardi was bought out and is now playing his trade down in Tampa, while Derek Stepan was shipped off to the hockey hotbed of Glendale, Arizona for 75 cents on the dollar. Of the five players who wore letters for the team last season, two of them have already moved on to greener pastures. As for the other three, they’ve remained on shaky ground throughout the offseason. Ryan McDonagh’s...

What Might Hold The Rangers Back

What Might Hold The Rangers Back

For the most part, the offseason’s gone very well for the Rangers so far. Dan Girardi was finally cast aside and replaced with Kevin Shattenkirk (arguably the best free agent available) on a very reasonable deal. Brendan Smith was resigned after a stellar playoffs and Mika Zibanejad was given a long-term deal that will keep him in New York for the next five years. The Rangers did what they set out to accomplish this offseason: fix the defense. It was no secret that the Rangers’ defense was their Achilles heel last year and heading into this season, it looks remarkably better. A top-four...

2017 Report Card: Adam Clendening

2017 Report Card: Adam Clendening

Who? Sigh. Where did it all go wrong? Coming out of preseason, Clendening was poised to be a major possession-driving defenseman. He played well while Dan Girardi nursed an injury and Nick Holden struggled (a nice way of saying "got deked out of his socks") ... but then when Girardi came back, it was Clendo who sat. And sat. And sat. Statline: 28 boxes of popcorn, 14 hot dogs, 3 of those weird little containers of hummus with like two pretzels ... I'm sorry. Ok for reals now. Statline (5x5): 2 goals and 7 assists in 31 games played; CF% 56.41 Later in the season, he even sat for...

As of Now, Are the Rangers Contenders?

As of Now, Are the Rangers Contenders?

Every offseason, hockey media speculates about how teams will perform in the upcoming season. Most years, the New York Rangers are labeled as a team on the decline that could fall out of Stanley Cup contention. The Rangers have been mislabeled in the past, for example when their blue line was classified as one of the strongest in the league when it was an ineffective mess. Dan Girardi was viewed as this incredible shot-blocking, defensive defenseman – a title that he did earn earlier in his career, but should have been quickly stripped of after the 2013-14 season when his decline became...

Summer Survival Guide 2017

Summer Survival Guide 2017

Well, it’s been summer for over a month now and I finally found some time to slap together my annual Summer Survival Guide. Normally I try do this just after the Rangers get eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But I’ve been a busy boy this summer, so I had to keep you waiting. Because this SSG was so late in coming a lot of things that have been dominating our summer discussions are already stale. Kevin Shattenkirk is the newest bald Ranger, Dan Girardi was bought out and Brendan Smith was re-signed. The Rangers are a better team than they were when the Ottawa Senators eliminated...
