Five Thoughts For Friday

Five Thoughts For Friday

Thinking a bit about jersey numbers, the captainship, and Ottawa's youth 1.  I've seen a bit of chat about jersey numbers recently, since David Legwand couldn't pick his traditional number 11, because it will eventually be retired for some Daniel Alfredsson guy. It's funny, because essentially, jersey numbers should be meaningless. They hardly even serve a purpose these days, except maybe to distinguish Jamie Benn from Jordie Benn. And yet, so much superstition follows them. You get guys like Dan Cleary changing to 71 so Alfie can wear number 11. Kyle Turris changing to number 7 when he...

Spezza and Alfredsson: Contrasting Departures

Two captains have left two years in a row from the Senators. That train of thought can be misleading, though, as the circumstances surrounding their departures are very different. This summer, Jason Spezza requested a trade, and the hockey world said, "Not again!" After all, everyone remembered the moment that shocked the Ottawa Senators only a year earlier: Daniel Alfredsson, leaving the only team he'd ever known to play for the Red Wings. People started painting Spezza with that brush, or even the brush of Dany Heatley, the biggest Sens villain since Yashin. The thing is that as a...

The Spezza Trade: Paralysis and the Way Back

The Spezza Trade: Paralysis and the Way Back

This post isn't really about Jason Spezza. It's actually about me. Sorry for the indulgence. I've been trying to write something about Jason Spezza since before the trade. Some sort of summation, a wrap of his time in the capital. But it wasn't working. I thought it was because I was trying to write about an ending before it had officially taken place. If Daniel Alfredsson's departure illustrated anything, it was that the manner of leaving can matter a great deal. And then the Spezza trade happened. But I couldn't write anything. Alex Chiasson and some prospects and a pick. The return...

Red Wings Free Agency Report: Daniel Alfredsson Wants Another Year

News from the diggers today, this time from The Freep's Helene St. James: Daniel Alfredsson has told #RedWings he wants to play another season. Sides will talk again later this week. — Helene St. James (@HeleneStJames) June 23, 2014 Alfredsson, who will turn 42 this December put up 49 points in 68 games with the Wings last season, missing time with groin and back problems throughout the year. Still, he was healthy and productive enough to lead the team in points. Usage-wise, Alfredsson played both top six and third line minutes and was the most-consistently used forward on the top...
