Michael Arace commentary: Both Jackets, Leafs can smile about trade

Eddie Shore — the late, great Hall of Fame defenseman and longtime owner of the minor-league Springfield Indians — once demanded that a used goal be thrown into a trade so that he would feel better about the return. On Thursday, the Blue Jackets traded a guy who might never play again to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a guy who has a contract that is purported to be the NHL’s worst. Here’s a question: Which side had to throw a used goal into the deal? A few more thoughts on the Nathan Horton-David Clarkson deal: Horton signed a seven-year, $37.1 million contract with the Blue Jackets on...

Game Recap 61: Shooting Blanks

The Blue Jackets came out hard, played mostly solid hockey with a makeshift lineup, but could not solve Cory Schneider, falling 2 - 0. Coming into this late afternoon affair at Nationwide Arena, the Blue Jackets got some good news in the form of the activation of Sergei Bobrovsky. Although Bob would not start this one, it was a positive note heading into the final 21 games. That was the only good news, however, as both Brandon Dubinsky and Matt Calvert are out for an extended period, due to concussion-like symptoms. Newly  acquired David Clarkson took the wing on the top line with Ryan...

[Saturday FTB] - Miracle Off Ice: Clarkson Still Gone

Some news and links to start your weekend right. Clarkson aims to get back to his old Devil ways as a Blue Jacket"Agent indicates winger and his family were rattled by Toronto media’s no-holds-barred reporting." Really, Davey? Because you received kid gloves treatment by the Toronto media right to up to the end. Maybe he reads a lot of PPP. Blue Jackets: Newly acquired David Clarkson happily out of Toronto spotlight

When David Clarkson matured as a player during his six seasons with the New Jersey Devils, he was a second- or third-line forward who saw second-unit power-play time, finished checks and, on occasion, dropped his gloves to fight. But the day he signed a seven-year, $36.75 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs — July 5, 2013 — Clarkson’s days as a “secondary” offensive player ended.

Silver Nuggets: Can the Senators exploit the falling cap?

Reports came out today that the Senators were interested in the former Maple Leaf and now Blue Jacket forward, David Clarkson. Part of the reason could be because of past interest, as the Senators were one of the finalists to sign Clarkson during Alfiegeddon, but ended up losing out to his hometown Leafs (phew). Another reason could be that the Senators were trying to ship away two or three of their bad contracts (Michalek, Legwand, Greening) to Toronto in exchange for one massive one, in order to free up roster spots. The final reason I could think of was that the Senators may be trying to...

Blue Jackets trade Nathan Horton to Maple Leafs for David Clarkson

Four days short of the trade deadline, the Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs rocked the NHL on Thursday night by swapping big-ticket, free-agent regrets. The Blue Jackets sent injured right wing Nathan Horton — whose career likely is finished because of a degenerative back condition — to the Leafs for right wing David Clarkson, whose career has gone off the rails since he left the New Jersey Devils.

Nonis 'should get medal' for making Clarkson disappear

If not for the magic act pulled off by Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis — author of “How to make David Clarkson and his seemingly non-movable contract disappear — then Dale Tallon certainly would have been the architect of the most surprising transaction of the day.

Wait, WHAT? Nathan Horton Traded for David Clarkson

No, seriously. What happened? We did what now? Really? Well, I guess he's changing his number. The Blue Jackets just made a trade that stunned the NHL. Unfortunately, it was because nobody in the NHL believed anyone would ever trade for David Clarkson. The team has sent LTIR-Wing Nathan Horton to Toronto, straight up, for Clarkson. No salary retained by either side, no picks. A pure player to player swap. In remarks to the press, Jarmo is praising Clarkson as a "physical, hard skating, goes to the net" kind of guy, and that is true, but he's being paid over $5 million a year for the next...

David Clarkson Unceremoniously Thrown Away

The Leafs traded David Clarkson. Seriously. The Leafs swapped David Clarkson to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Nathan Horton. The deal centers around Horton's contract not being insured. The Blue Jackets would rather get any tiny return on the money they have to pay while the rich Leafs are happy to stash Nathan Horton on LTIR and be free of his contract aside from tagging room in the summer. David Clarkson was garbage while he was here. Despite the trade today his contract was a bad enough signing that Dave Nonis will almost certainly be canned for signing. Expect to hear it from the guys...
