Pointing Fingers: The Minnesota Wild goalie saga

So you want to point fingers and figure out who is to blame for the Wild's ineptitude lately? We have certainly all been over this since the slide of 2016 began for this team. Every fan blog, every beat writer, TV analysts and rubes alike. While a majority of the focus has fallen on Mike Yeo and his inablity to movitate this team out of their slump (I've even written about it), I keep seeing some people's landing spot in the blame game falling on the goalies. Some are convinced Devan Dubnyk is at fault for the slide. Since the calendar turned to 2016, he has started in 13 games to Darcy...

Islanders' Anders Lee going through bad luck scoring spell

DETROIT -- The relief on Anders Lee's face was palpable on Tuesday. He got a piece of Travis Hamonic's shot -- a waist-high tip just after Wild forward Nino Niederreiter appeared to deflect it -- and it sailed past Devan Dubnyk to give the Isles a 2-1 lead.

Wilderness Walk: Meltdown Continues Edition

Snow is falling in the Twin Cities, but the Wild's meltdown continues. There's really not much to say.  Same old story, an uneven effort over three periods, an early lead was lost, Devan Dubnyk was pulled with 15 minutes left in the third, lines were scrambled, a coach's challenge failed, the WIld took their foot off the gas.  The result was exactly as they deserved. There was some positivity in the form of Nino Niederreiter continuing to pay back the team that dumped him, Charlie Coyle keeping hot, and Jason Pominville scoring a quality goal.  The Wild put up 20 shots in the first...

Wild lose 5-3 to Islanders in first game back from All-Star Break

A week off to forget about Wild hockey sounded great, but when the players turn in that kind of performance, it's tough to not want to forget about it again. The players sure didn't shake the bad habits the plagued them prior to the break while on vacation or taking part in the All-Star weekend festivities. Charlie Coyle, Jason Pominville, and Nino Niederreiter scored for Minnesota, as the islanders found the back of the net behind Devan Dubnyk five times to best the Wild at Barclays Center. Minnesota put up 20 shots on goal in the first period, testing Jean-Francois Berube early in...

NHL 2016 All-Star Game

The NHL announced the format for the 2016 NHL All-star Skills Competition taking place January 30th in Nashville, Tennessee. Captains, Jaromir Jagr and Alex Ove.... um, maybe not Ovechkin (he was a late scratch because of an injury) for the Eastern Conference, and Patrick Kane and John Scott (not for the Arizona Coyotes...that much we know) for the Western Conference, will choose which players will take place in each of the events. Every player will take part in one of the events, so will Devan Dubnyk, the Minnesota Wild's only representative, take place in the Breakaway Challenge, the...

Devan Dubnyk Puts the Game On His Stick

Quite the soap opera performance for the Wild netminder, with some excellent plays, and some questionable ones. The entire Minnesota Wild team showed up and played like a fourth-liner trying to keep his name in the lineup.  Each offensive unit was dominant over the Arizona Coyotes, and the Wild also showed their elite defensive prowess by completely containing the Arizona offense.  Following the second frame, shots were 24-6 in favor of the Wild, but in the most Minnesota way possible, the score remained 0-0.  Devan Dubnyk was probably wishing he had hand warmers in his gear because he...

Postgame: Wild better come up with solutions during the All-Star break

The Wild outplayed the Coyotes from start to ... almost finish, but a Devan Dubnyk puck-handling gaffe led to the tying goal and a shootout loss

Arizona Coyotes play horrible hockey, win in a shootout anyway

The Arizona Coyotes defeated the Minnesota Wild in a game they shouldn't have won, but an overtime they should have. It's hard to describe the Arizona Coyotes' 2-1 shootout win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night at Xcel Energy Center. Louis Domingue played out of his mind in front of a team that couldn't get anything going, and then one bone-headed play by Devan Dubnyk gave the Coyotes all the room they needed to take the victory. Game Summary First Period Arizona took four shots on net to Minnesota's 13. Couldn't get much worse could it? Second Period Arizona took two shots on net to...

Game 49: Arizona Coyotes @ Minnesota Wild

As far as months go, January has been pretty bad for the Wild. They haven't been winning, they haven't played well, and this is a team that's looking pretty desperate for answers. Tonight they look to make their limping into the All-Star break just a little less noticeable with a victory against the Arizona Coyotes. This time last year, the Coyotes were out of the playoff race and in the process of trading off guys like Devan Dubnyk, Zbynyk Michalek, Antoine Vermette, and Keith Yandle. No doubt the players still tried hard, but management was flat-out tanking for a McEichel...

Coyotes @ Wild, Line Combinations, Arizona Notes, Key Figures

Minnesota looks to rebound in front of the home faithful Line Combinations Tonight the Minnesota Wild return to St. Paul from their west coast road trip to host the Arizona Coyotes. The wild have allowed the fewest third period goals all season but the wind has been let out of the sails in their last few losses. After giving up the game winning goal with ninety seconds left to San Jose, Minnesota missed out on getting at least a point. Same look for the Wild tonight but Devan Dubnyk will start between the pipes. Minnesota has been getting some production from their grinders lately with...

Wild vs. Coyotes: Game preview, tale of the tape, projected lineups

The Wild try to end a dismal January on a high note at home against the Arizona Coyotes. As far as months go, January has been pretty bad for the Wild. Tonight they look to make their limping into the All-Star break just a little less noticeable with a victory against the Arizona Coyotes. Sharks vs. Wild Preview: Saturday afternoon on ice

San Jose hosts Minnesota for the final time this season. With the exception of a struggling Dallas Stars team, the Sharks haven't exactly faced a tough schedule as of late. Things get a bit tougher as the Minnesota Wild come to town to start a back-to-back that ends against the Kings on Sunday. Right. The Wild are currently sitting in a wild card spot and despite not exactly being world beaters ought to face a tough challenge for San Jose. They have the fourth-highest even strength save percentage in the NHL, thanks mostly to the work of Devan Dubnyk, which I assume is as strange to read as...
