Wilderness Walk: Wasted Opportunity Edition

Last night's game against the Jets was meaningless. It didn't have to be, but playing time decisions rendered it so. The Minnesota Wild won last night's game 4-3. It did not matter. This game wasn't ever going to be meaningful, and with any stakes whatsoever. It was pre-season, so the game doesn't count in any standings. Thomas Vanek was out for the Minnesota Wild. Dustin Byfuglien, Evander Kane, and Jacob Trouba were absent from last night's contest. Terrible Ondrej Pavelec was in net, meaning that scoring 4 goals was basically like scoring two against a normal goalie. The Jets recognized...

Byfuglien launches rocket, Little lifts rebound for Jets' 2-1 Victory over Wild

The Winnipeg Jets made the most of their scoring chances, defeating the Minnesota Wild 2-1 at the MTS Centre. Recap The Minnesota Wild enjoyed a slight edge in play during the first period, but were held off the score sheet. Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson were solid in net for Winnipeg. The Jets' confidence seemed to grow as the game wore on. Midway through the third period, Dustin Byfuglien fired a bullet with a one-timer shot from the point, on a nice power play feed from Tobias Enstrom. Minnesota goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov looked distracted by Andrew Ladd, who was perched right...

GameDay Thread: Winnipeg Jets vs Minnesota Wild

We have some hockey to watch! The Winnipeg Jets open their preseason at home versus the Minnesota Wild. The Winnipeg Jets will be dressing a fair share of top end talent and top prospects. The Wild are dressing a load of NHLers too, but most may as well be nameless AHLers. It is game one. This is largely a learning experience for youth. Let's see what the kids can do. For those unaware, the game will be available on TSN3 tonight Possible (likely) Line-ups: Winnipeg Jets Andrew Ladd - Bryan Little - Dustin Byfuglien Nic Petan - Adam Lowry - Michael Frolik Nikolaj Ehlers - Mathieu...

FlightZone: Pavelec Starts; Hutchinson Finishes

Byfuglien finds playing D fun, Arizona's PP coach is awesome, and the value of video. According to the one and only P-Willy (Patrick Williams of NHL.com), Ondrej Pavelec will get the start tonight and Michael Hutchinson will finish the game. I think this is a sign of things to come. Only thing I contend with here is the idea that Mark Scheifele is a better number 1 centre based on size. Dustin Byfuglien had fun playing defence and is sad he isn't playing D anymore. The Minnesota Wild's lineup for tonight's game. Powerplay coaches can do a whole lot to improve a teams powerplay. John...

Byfuglien ready for full season in hybrid role with Jets

If Dustin Byfuglien is excited about remaining a forward, he's doing a good job of keeping it to himself

Zone Deployment Optimization: Comparing Dustin Byfuglien at forward and defense in all three zones

Zone Deployment Optimization: Comparing Dustin Byfuglien at forward and defense in all three zones

Where does Byfuglien play best in all three zones? Recently Justin Bourne released a must-read article determining whether optimal deployment of Dustin Byfuglien is as a forward or defenseman. Bourne used video to study Byfuglien's habits under both deployments, much like a NHL coach would. In the article, Bourne shows examples of the typical defensive zone shift with Byfuglien the forward versus the defender. He then comes to the conclusion that Byfuglien is a better blue-line player than forward. But what do the on-ice results say? Last week AIH introduced a new way to evaluate and study...

FlightZone: Chevy Talks A Lot

Chevy does a few interviews, Lombardi on analytics, and the Leafs decide to be smart. Bob McKenzie interviewed Kevin Cheveldayoff in Penticton. Chevy wants you to remember that the Jets did extend Mark Stuart for 4 years. An entertaining, if not accurate season preview for the Jets. Ed Tait wonders why the Jets shouldn't have young players on the team. Kevin McCartney is in Penticton and had a comprehensive review of the Jets/Flames game. Dustin Byfuglien is a better defenceman than forward, but if you play him in front of Pavelec, he is a bad defenceman. Puckdaddy did a season preview...

How would Dustin Byfuglien look defending in front of Tuuka Rask?

Looking at what the numbers say Dustin Byfuglien's goal differential would be on a different team for 2010-14. This question was asked over the internet recently. Not specifically to me, but it looked like a fun exercise. So, I took a look at answering the question with two different methods. Dustin Byfuglien has played as a defender for this franchise for four years (well... one of them was part forward, part defenseman). In that time he has out shot his opponents 2686 to 2436 for 5v5 situations, giving him an impressive shot differential of +250. While Byfuglien's shot differential is...
