Canucks Hat Trick: Beating the back-to-backers, counting on Eddie Lack, measuring Bieksa’s worth

You have to give the Winnipeg Jets credit, lots of credit. In a preseason predictions roundup, the Hockey News picked the Jets to finish last in the Central Division. So did Yahoo’s Puck Daddy. Sportsnet.ca wrote, “Yawn. That’s my prediction …

Kuzma: Canucks show off their mean side

LOS ANGELES — Eddie Lack made a statement in more ways than one Saturday. When his captain charged to the net and tried to jam a Daniel Sedin rebound under Jonathan Quick in the second period of playoff-like showdown, the centre’s knee struck the goalie’s head and they tumbled to the ice. An irritated Quick punched Henrik Sedin and a scrum that included Alex Burrows and Tyler Toffoli pairing up, more than got the attention of Lack. He bolted from his crease and stood on his side of centre ice. He looked like he wanted a piece of Quick.

Gallagher: Lack, Burrows help bury Flyers

In this stretch run to what they hope will be a Western Conference playoff berth, the Vancouver Canucks have dropped some games against teams that can only be described as easy opponents. They’ve recently lost in Buffalo, Arizona and New Jersey, and for a time Tuesday night at Rogers Arena they flirted with adding the road hopeless Philadelphia Flyers to that list.

Botchford: Eddie Lack’s success a double-edged sword

Botchford: Eddie Lack’s success a double-edged sword

Eddie Lack spent most of the season waiting for this chance. That’s both good, and bad. The good, so far he’s killing it. Since Jannik Hansen exploded into Ryan Miller’s knee, Lack has a .934 save percentage. He’s played Sherpa on a team which, defensively, was up to its knees in mud for nearly three weeks. Without either blueliner from their top pairing, because of injuries to Alex Edler and Chris Tanev, the Canucks were a mess in a way that was comparable to the worst of last season.

Canucks 3, Sharks 2: Lack and Horvat strong as Canucks post huge win

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Eddie Lack was expecting it to be like a playoff game. He was right. In his first start at the raucous Shark Tank, the first shot at the Vancouver Canucks goaltender came when he attempted to play the puck behind the net in the opening period Saturday and was steamrolled by Tommy Wingels. No penalty was called.

Sharks 6 Canucks 2: Crease conundrum could cloud stretch drive

In theory, it had a lot of merit. In reality, it has created another crease conundrum. Giving Eddie Lack a rest and putting Jacob Markstrom to the test Tuesday made perfect sense for the Vancouver Canucks.

Willes: Behind Eddie Lack's laugh track lurks a tough competitor

The popular image of Eddie Lack is that of the happy-go-lucky jokester, and Henrik Sedin does nothing to alter that perception of his countryman. “I don’t think he understands where we are and how big every game is,” the Canucks’ captain said of the team’s newly minted starting goalie.
