Silver Nuggets: Dear Daniel

Silver Seven — Dear Daniel, I hope you are recovering after last night's marathon game, I know I am and I didn't have to play in it. Anyways, I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you how much you mean to this city and this team (as if you didn't already know). When people around the league talk about the Ottawa Senators, invariably Erik Karlsson comes up. Probably the word pesky is mentioned, and I guess Jason Spezza is pretty well known too. In Ottawa, it is Daniel Alfredsson. You ARE the Ottawa Senators, and it feels as though you always have been. People say that you could run for mayor,...

Breaking down Ottawa's last minute game tying goal

PensBurgh — It's a team game and one little slip can cost you the game. The Pittsburgh Penguins learned that the hard way. The below isn't really meant to dish out blame (everyone could have done something better) but just to illustrate how the breakdown happened. 0:08- Unreal play by Matt Cooke to bat the puck ahead and blow by Erik Karlsson, forcing Karlsson to slash at him, which breaks Karlsson’s stick. 0:20- Whistle blows, Karlsson is yelling at the referee for some reason, not understanding how HE gets the penalty when his stick broke..Maybe cuz he slashed another player and that’s why i...

Douglas Murraysson — er Murray — makes his mark in Pittsburgh

Senators Extra | Ottawa Citizen — ShareThis When you think about typical standout Swedish defencemen, you tend to think of dynamic offensive threats Nicklas Lidstrom, Erik Karlsson, and for those of an earlier generation, Borje Salming. You don't automatically think of Pittsburgh Penguins horse Douglas Murray. ShareThis

Game Thread - Pittsburgh Penguins vs Ottawa Senators

Habs Eyes On The Prize — Two teams I was hoping would lose in the first round are now facing off in the second round, so who to cheer for? Well Jimmy Rixner made a pretty good case for us today, and Karlsson sucks. This series is the best player in the world, Sidney Crosby, versus the pretend best player in the world in the mind of deluded Senators fans, Erik Karlsson. With Tomas Vokoun starting in net instead of Marc-Andre Fleury, the goaltending advantage that Ottawa has isn't even that big, even if Craig Anderson stands on his head once again (he probably won't though). Oh and did we mention that Kris Letan...

2013 NHL Playoffs: Biased predictions for the Ottawa Senators-Pittsburgh Penguins series

Silver Seven — It's time for us to embarrass ourselves yet again. If you thought our thoughts about the Senators' previous series were silly, wait until you read what we think about this upcoming series. 1. Daniel Alfredsson and Erik Karlsson tied for the team points lead with 6 each in 5 games. Alfie is 40 and Erik Karlsson is still recovering from having his season ended by not letting his season be ended. Who do you feel is more likely to lead the team in scoring at the end of this series? Or will it be someone else entirely? Bobby - I have a hunch that this series may have a few overtime games,...

Silver Nuggets: The Spezza Questions

Silver Seven — Firstly, outside of Erik Karlsson (and this year's version of Craig Anderson), there is no one more talented in the Ottawa Senators organization than Jason Spezza. Kyle Turris has done an admirable job of filling in this season, but Jason Spezza isn't a good player, he is a great player. He has that special next level that allows him to do things no other forward on the Senators can do. He makes his wingers considerably more effective, and I swoon to think of the effect he will have on the ineffectual power play. But all the hubbub (I always wanted to use that word) about his potentia...

Round 1 playoff predictions revisited

Silver Seven — The Silver Seven staff made a whole bunch of predictions about the Ottawa Senators and their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series with the Montreal Canadiens. Who knows what they're talking about and who's full of hot air? 1. Who will score more points, Erik Karlsson or P.K. Subban? Karlsson had 6P (1G, 5A) and Subban had 4P (2G, 2A). Adnan: Erik KarlssonCorrect! Peter: I'm predicting six points for EK, five for PK, so Erik comes out ever so slightly ahead.Peter hits the bullseye! Darren: PK. Whoops. Mark: PK SubbanWhoops. Ryan: Erik Karlsson, and I've put money on it. Fo...

Ottawa Senators annihilate the Montreal Canadiens again - win series

Silver Seven — [Game Summary] [Event Summary] [Faceoff Report] [Time on Ice] [Corsi] [Zone Starts] [Shift Charts] How about that? When Erik Karlsson went down in early February, joining Jason Spezza, Milan Michalek, Jared Cowen on the injured list, most observers including yours truly wrote off the season. Oh well, it is a short season. Just a couple of months of pain and we get a high draft pick and our star players return healthy for next season. Right? Wrong. The Senators not only never fell out of a playoff spot, but got three of those four players back, and then proceeded to eliminate the #2 se...

P.K. Subban nominated for the Norris Trophy

Habs Eyes On The Prize — P.K. Subban has had an incredibly season this year. He's outplayed Erik Karlsson in the playoffs, and outperformed Karlsson's Norris winning season from last year. Nominated with Subban are Kris Letang and Ryan Suter. I ran out of time to compare Letang to Subban before I went on vacation, but let's just say that if anyone is going to challenge him for the trophy among the nominees, it should be him. Suter on the other hand, seems to have been nominated for playing a lot even though he's not very good. Subban dwarfed him in every way this season. Press Release: The field for the James...

2013 NHL Playoffs: Is Erik Karlsson worn out?

Silver Seven — Despite the fact that he's obviously not at peak conditioning, Erik Karlsson remains the most potent offensive player in the Ottawa Senators lineup. That's been reflected in his ice time since returning from injury: He played over 27 minutes per game in the final three regular season games, and has had over 29 minutes in each of the two playoff games to date. In Game Two especially, his lessened conditioning was obvious; not only was he physically vulnerable on the ice, he was also mentally worn out, and made the kind of costly mistake that he rarely makes to set up the Montreal Canadi...

2013 NHL Playoffs: Biased predictions for the Ottawa Senators-Montreal Canadiens series

Silver Seven — Do these predictions matter much? Probably not, but they're still a lot of fun. So take a look, and make your own predictions for these questions in the comments! 1. Who will score more points, Erik Karlsson or P.K. Subban? Adnan: Erik Karlsson though these are dependent on both question #2 and question #3. Peter: I'm predicting six points for EK, five for PK, so Erik comes out ever so slightly ahead. Darren: PK. Erik is still far from 100%, and he's playing without Jason Spezza, who is a key offensive contributor. I think these two things give PK a slight edge in the points depart...
