Hal Gill still has a big impact

After Bolton’s Hal Gill completed his four-year collegiate career at Providence College in 1997, many on the scene predicted there was no way he would ever play in the NHL. Too slow, they said. Big, obviously, but not tough enough. No talent. It was not the finest example of talent evaluation. The too-slow and untalented Gill has merely played more than 1,100 NHL games, plus 110 more in the playoffs, won a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009 and earned some $22 million.

Hal Gill has played in just four games this season and has been a healthy scratch since Dec. 21, but the veteran defenseman has been an important part of the Flyers, coach Craig Berube said after the team practiced Friday in Voorhees.
