Fantasy Hockey Injury News for Sunday

Fantasy Hockey Scouts — Not half bad... James Neal marked his return after missing eight games due to a concussion with 3+1=4 & eight shots. Nice way to get your hands loosened up before the playoffs start. No Jaromir Jagr yesterday as he was slain by the flu... hopefully he's feeling better today, some of us could really use him. Martin Havlat sat out last night's game, he has a few minor injuries but likely would have played if it were a playoff game. Tyler Bozak was out again due to his shoulder injury, he's day-to-day. Jason Spezza (back) has been skating but nobody is expecting him back soon. The Wil...

Fantasy Hockey Injury News for Saturday

Fantasy Hockey Scouts — James Neal (concussion) and Paul Martin (thumb) will both be in the lineup for the Penguins finale today. Jaromir Jagr has a case of influenza and he will sit out of today's Bruins game. He may also miss tomorrow's finale but that's still up in the air. Sven Baertschi has a groin injury that forced him to miss last night's game. Ditto for Jiri Hudler with an undisclosed injury. And since the Flames have no more games left, they're done for the season. Tuomo Ruutu is going to have surgery on his hip during the off season. No, not the hip he had surgery on last year. The other one. Jean-...

Recap: Pens depth helps them beat Florida 3-1

PensBurgh — Make a list of the five most important Penguin skaters and it's probably Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Paul Martin and James Neal, though your preferred order might slighly varied. With four of the five out of the lineup on Saturday night, the Penguins leaned on their depth and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in order to get the win from the Florida Panthers. The game started slow for the Pens, but late in the first period Letang received a Beau Bennett pass and flung a puck through traffic past Jacob Markstrom. Then, shortly before the period ended Bennett, Joe Vitale and B...

Morrow Leads Penguins to 3-1 Victory over Hapless Panthers

Litter Box Cats — It's good to know that the Panthers can keep up with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately, the Panthers were able to keep it close with the Penguins minus Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal and Paul Martin. For a while it seemed like the Penguins would put up another touchdown on the Cats the way the Jets so gracefully did on Thursday night, but the defense was able to shut down much of the second half of the game while the third line chipped in a goal to keep it interesting. That was about it; not so much a bad way to lose as it was a dull way to lose. Tomorrow morning you wil...

  • Danger zone: Digging into Dan Bylsma's coaching strategies
You could hear the rumbles from Penguins fans and media yesterday after they saw the lines in practice. Chris Kunitz, as habit has been, was bumped from the Evgeni Malkin / James Neal pair back up to his other “usual” line with Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis. Jarome Iginla dropped down to the Malkin/Neal line, with Neal playing slightly away from his comfort zone on the left wing. Many vocal Pens fans had long clamored to unite Crosby+Iginla (keeping Iggy on his familiar right side) and keeping the successful Kunitz+Malkin+Neal line together. It offers a reasonable and balanced scori...

  • Islanders vs. Penguins - Game 4 Nap Updates: Orpik, Neal returning?
The main buzz coming out of morning skates before Game 4 between the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins: The Isles are not expecting lineup changes, the Pens could be expecting two. Pittsburgh has adopted a not-unusual-but-still-absurd policy of discussing no injuries, no nothing before playoff games. It's something playoff teams do more often than not, and almost makes you wish gamblers had more pull on hockey. (Okay, not really, but still...) Here's NHL.com on Brooks Orpik and James Neal's possible return from injuries. For the Islanders, possibly a decision between David Ull...
  • Islanders vs. Penguins Game 2 Lineup Moves: Sidney Crosby's back; Also: On coaching information
A mid-day lineup update (we think), as well as some food for thought before Game 2 of the New York Islanders series with the Pittsburgh Penguins: Pittsburgh: Sidney Crosby is a confirmed return for the Penguins. James Neal, who left Game 1 after taking a check along the boards from Travis Hamonic, was not on the ice for the morning skate. New York: As many fans anticipated, it looks like Marty Reasoner will be out. Not due to suspension, mind you; the league did not discipline him for his almost-knee on Jussi Jokinen near the end of Game 1. The modest surprise is who would replace Reas...
