The Noon Number: What’s the Point?

A look at some “struggling” blueliners 88 - Number of shots combined for John Carlson (50) and Matt Niskanen (38) so far this season, with a grand total of zero goals to show for it. That’s the second and seventh-most shots in the League, respectively, without a goal. Of course, that’s not to say that they’re not chipping in offensively even without goals. Niskanen’s nine assists are sixth among all goalless players, while Carlson is close behind in seventh with eight.

The Noon Number: Coming Up Empty

A look at a rare drought for the Caps’ top offensive defenseman 3.09 - Shots on goal per game for John Carlson, second-highest rate in the NHL for a player without a goal this season behind only Boston's Torey Krug (3.18). Carlson's 34 shots on goal is the fourth-most in the League for goal-less skaters, trailing Dustin Byfuglien and Keith Yandle (37) and Krug (35). Carlson's rate is currently a career high, up more than a half a shot per game from his 2.54 in 2013-14 and way up from last season's 2.21. In other words... the goals will come.
