Karl Alzner, John Carlson don't mind being separated

Washington Post — Dating back to their time in the American Hockey League, Karl Alzner and John Carlson weren't just a consistent defensive pairing they were joined at the hip. Friends on and off the ice, they developed a strong chemistry as defensive partners and were one of the most stable elements over the Washington Capitals' lineup in the previous two seasons. Rarely did they play games skating alongside anyone else and they turned into the team's shutdown pair. Read full article >>

Canes @ Caps

Canes Now | News & ObserverJeff Skinner's power-play goal has given the Canes a 1-0 lead after the opening period at Verizon Center. Had Caps defenseman John Carlson not come to Braden Holtby's rescue, it would have been 2-0. The Canes thoroughly controlled the first 10 minutes of the game against the Southeaast Division leaders, outshooting the Caps 14-0. Carolina kept the puck in the Caps zone, pressuring Holtby. Skinner's goal was his 11th of the season and his first in 10 games. It came on a four-on-three power play as Eric Staal ripped a shot from the right circle and Skinner knocked in the rebound at 5:01. The Can...

Third Period Thread

Japers' Rink — A pair of second period goals from Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson tied the game on two separate occasions, setting the stage for Joel Ward to put the home team ahead by one late in the second (on a rather delightful dangle). The tide has turned in Washington's favor (the Capitals outshooting their opponents 26 to 19 through forty minutes) and the third period looks to begin as boisterous as the previous ended (at four on four). Your third period is right ahead.... Washington Capitals Hockey Tweets

Capitals vs. Maple Leafs: Miscues drop Washington to bottom of NHL standings

Washington Post — It should have been a simple play, but like so much this season nothing comes easy for the Washington Capitals. John Carlson took a long-range shot halfway through the first period Tuesday night at Verizon Center that went high and wide, rimmed around the glass and made it all the way back behind the Capitals’ net where goaltender Michal Neuvirth came out to play the puck. When defenseman Tom Poti approached, Neuvirth left it for him, but there was a miscommunication and neither player took control of the puck. The miscue made a nice gift for Toronto Maple Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk. Re...
