Bruins’ self-proclaimed defensive depth being put to test

In the offseason, Peter Chiarelli said he felt the Bruins had nine NHL-caliber defensemen. A 10th, he would later say, was close in Zach Trotman. It was hard to disagree. Then the B’€™s traded Johnny Boychuk. Then Kevan Miller dislocated his right shoulder in a fight Saturday night, leaving him out indefinitely. You can bet […]

Flames, Avalanche, Sharks also were in on Nick Leddy

The list of teams the New York Islanders were competing with in the Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk cap casualty sweepstakes continues to trickle out. Previously Winnipeg was mentioned for Leddy and Florida was mentioned for both. Now add a few more teams to the list believed to have pursued a deal for the ex-Blackhawks blueliner. From item 14 in Elliotte Friedman's Oct. 8 30 Thoughts column: Some execs were surprised at the Leddy deal from the Chicago perspective, because the Blackhawks asked for draft picks from other teams, not players. Bowman said he wanted assets that wouldn’t hurt...

Islanders new defenseman Johnny Boychuk: Don't take us lightly

There were two new faces at Nassau Coliseum on Monday morning, both of which added even more excitement and intrigue to a locker room that was downright dreary just a few months ago. Meet the New Islander: Johnny Boychuk, perfect hockey name and good player

Johnny Boychuk fires bombs and tends to destroy people -- legally, which is cool. The New York Islanders pulled off a one-two punch with cap-crunched teams Saturday, acquiring Johnny Boychuk and then Nick Leddy, who is joined by Rockford goalie Kent Simpson on his way to the Isles organization. We dug up a few references to help familiarize you with the new acquisitions. Previously we focused on Simpson, the least known of the new acquisitions. Now here's a bit about Boychuk. From Colorado to Boston, with an Austrian Lockout Sojourn Boychuk had been with the Bruins since 2008, when he was ...

Looking at the Bruins’ candidates to replace Johnny Boychuk

The trade of Johnny Boychuk left a tough hole to fill on the right side of the Bruins’ second defensive pairing. Not only was Boychuk a dependable player alongside Zdeno Chara on the top pairing for years, but his work in anchoring the second pairing without Chara in the postseason is what allowed the B’s […]

Johnny Boychuk Traded to Islanders

Way out West there was a fella, fella I want to tell you about, fella by the name of Johnny Boychuk. At least, that was the handle his loving parents gave him. But he never had much use for it himself. This Boychuk, he was called "Rocket." Now, Rocket, that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then, there was a lot about Rocket that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. That's why Johnny Boychuk has played his last game in a Bruins uniform. Now this story I'm about to unfold took place starting back in 2009, just about the time of our conflict with Montreal and the...

Panthers Made 'Serious' Offers for Boychuk, Leddy

The Winnipeg Jets aren't the only team to leak that they were pursuing one of the two defensemen acquired by the New York Islanders on Saturday. Dale Tallon, general manager of the Florida Panthers, said he was in "serious negotiations" for both Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy, but the Islanders beat them to both, as the pieces needed "just didn't make sense" to the Panthers. That report comes from George Richards of the Miami Herald, who was covering the Panthers preseason game against the Lightning on the night of the trades.

Peter Chiarelli: Johnny Boychuk deal a 'tough trade,' but a necessary one

BOSTON -- In a deal that will be received negatively by the players and the fans, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli traded defenseman Johnny Boychuk to the New York Islanders on Saturday. Other organizations were in the mix for Boychuk’s services, but the Bruins ultimately pulled the trigger on a deal with the Islanders, sending Boychuk to Long Island in exchange for two second-round draft picks -- the Philadelphia Flyers’ second-round pick in the 2015 NHL entry draft and the Islanders’ second-round pick in the 2016 draft -- and a conditional third-round pick in the 2015 NHL...

Peter Chiarelli: Johnny Boychuk trade ‘doesn’t make us better now, obviously’

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Saturday that he traded defenseman Johnny Boychuk due to the team’€™s salary cap situation and because he found the return ‘€” two second-round picks and a conditional third ‘€” to be strong value. He did concede one point, however. “This doesn’€™t make us better now, obviously,” Chiarelli said, “but […]

With Krug and Smith Finally Signed, There Was No Reason to Trade Johnny Boychuk

Three draft picks for Johnny Boychuck is nothing to scoff at, especially with two second-rounders coming back, but after signing Torey Krug and Reilly Smith to deals to avoid this salary cap conundrum, why move Boychuk at all?

Rapid Reaction: Boychuk dealt to Isles

BOSTON -- It didn’t take long for Bruins fans to show their anguish on social media once news broke that general manager Peter Chiarelli traded defenseman Johnny Boychuk to the New York Islanders Saturday afternoon. Sending Boychuk packing had nothing to do with his play, it was simply due to the team’s salary-cap constraints and had been rumored for a while. The Bruins will miss his relentless style of play and now Boston’s blue line takes on a different look.
