Quick Bites: Doing the same thing and expecting different results

Quick Bites: Doing the same thing and expecting different results

Something, something, banging my head against the wall. It’s difficult to watch a game and commit each play, or even how one player performed, to memory. In an attempt to record what my eyes think they saw, I tried to focus on a handful of players, namely defenders, in the first period. My eye test told me Radim Simek did a good job a handful of times closing the gap between him and oncoming forwards in the neutral zone. It seemed that, despite the Sharks shot advantage, the Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun pair spent more time than not in their own zone. Braun seems to have one way...

Winning Play: Dillon keeps Sharks rolling

The San Jose Sharks are closing in on their goal, which isn’t just to win games. ”We just gotta keep rolling,” said Justin Braun, of his team’s modest two-game win streak. “Start shutting guys down like we used to.” San Jose clearly isn’t there yet. Despite the 5-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, the Sharks were blown away in terms of shot volume and location. This wasn’t just because of score effects either — after the first period, per Natural Stat Trick, San Jose was overwhelmed by shots (17-9) and High-Danger Corsi (9-1). Despite this, they managed a 2-0 lead in...

Sharks extend mastery of Canadiens

Martin Jones stopped the Montreal Canadiens — and the San Jose Sharks’ four-game skid. Jones made 40 saves — 22 in the third period — to help the Sharks beat the Canadiens 3-1 on Sunday. Justin Braun, Brent Burns and Joe Pavelski scored for San Jose. “We did a great job of eliminating those Grade-A chances and those odd-man rushes that have been causing us some problems,” Jones said. “It was much better tonight.” Jones improved to 7-1 against Montreal as the Sharks beat the Canadiens for the seventh consecutive time. Jeff Petry scored for Montreal. “When you run into a...

Winning Play: Knights strike back?

Winning Play: Knights strike back?

LAS VEGAS — From the drop of the puck — literally — the San Jose Sharks were a step behind the Vegas Golden Knights. We’re not talking just about William Karlsson’s (71) goal, 14 seconds in. It’s hard to blame Aaron Dell for kneeing a Brayden McNabb (3) point shot right off Karlsson’s leg, back into the net. That’s a fluke. What wasn’t a fluke, however, was Dell (30) torpedoing what appeared to be a simple hand-off to Justin Braun (61) past the receiver, into Jonathan Marchessault’s (81) clutches. Maybe Braun didn’t communicate his location well? Maybe...
