Let’s talk about the bottom six

Let’s talk about the bottom six

Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via It could certainly be improved. Despite the result of the past few games, one the of the Flyers’ key strengths has been their top two lines and how they have been able to dominate play at 5-on-5. In nearly every game they have played so far, the Kevin Hayes and Sean Couturier lines have been able to drive play fantastically well, create high danger scoring opportunities in and around the slot, and eye test wise, just simply look fantastic out there. However, this cannot be said of the bottom six. This is not to say that I at all blame them for how the...

Who doesn’t love a late night shootout?

Who doesn’t love a late night shootout?

Photo by Derek Cain/Icon Sportswire via Postgame 10/12 The dream is dead. The Philadelphia Flyers will not go 82-0-0 in 2019-20, after dropping the first game of their Western Canadian road trip to the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2 in a shootout. Philly won the shot and shot attempt battle, but were never able to create enough momentum to open the floodgates, as Jacob Markstrom stole the show by stopping 30 of 32 shots on goal through 65 minutes, then denying both Jakub Voracek and Kevin Hayes in the shootout. While Claude Giroux was able to bury his free breakaway attempt, it wasn’t...

It’s only been two games, but the culture change is obvious

Photo by Mitchell Leff/ This is what a ‘bias for action’ looks like. In their two games to start the 2019-20 season, the Flyers have done a lot of things right on the ice, both small and large. For staters, the new line combinations are looking awfully good together. I certainly wouldn’t have expected the dominance we have seen so far while Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier have been separated. Both against the Blackhawks and the Devils, the Kevin Hayes ‘first line’ and Couturier’s ‘second line’ completely outplayed their competition (even if the Hayes line was not matched...

Flyers 4, Devils 0: How’s that for a home opener?

Flyers 4, Devils 0: How’s that for a home opener?

Photo by Mitchell Leff/ Some observations for your morning... Now that’s a home opener, eh? Okay, technically the Prague game counted as a hone game, but last night was the real home opener, and it was good. After a bit of a messy start that still saw the Flyers getting some chances, they took over through the final two periods, grabbing the momentum and running with it. Goals by Ivan Provorov, Kevin Hayes, Sean Couturier, and Travis Konecny grabbed and maintained the Flyers’ lead, and the Devils just didn’t have an answer. Glorious, glorious victory. Travis Sanheim and Matt Niskanen lead the way on defense

Photo by Chase Agnello-Dean/NHLI via Analyzing defensive pairing performance for Flyers vs. Blackhawks The Philadelphia Flyers won their season opener on Friday over the Chicago Blackhawks and there are plenty of reasons to be excited. The team looked a little quicker and alive under new head coach Alain Vigneault, while Kevin Hayes played a pretty good game in between Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek. We know the goals and saves that got us to the final score of 4-3, but let’s try to take a deeper look at some of the plays that may have gone unnoticed on Friday. Line By Line will try...

Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3: Czech this out!

Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3: Czech this out!

Photo by Chase Agnello-Dean/NHLI via It got nervy in the end, but the Flyers get the season off to a good start in Prague! In a historic matchup, playing their first ever competitive match outside of North America, the Flyers began their season on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks from the O2 Arena in Prague. The Flyers started out with the line of Claude Giroux, Kevin Hayes and Jake Voracek, and sent out the pair of Travis Sanheim and Matt Niskanen on defense. Both the Flyers and Blackhawks were sloppy with the puck early on, and play was chippy through the first few minutes. The...

Flyers season preview - The Forwards

Flyers season preview - The Forwards

Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via There is much to be excited about here! Introduction For the Flyers, going into this off-season, there were many concerns and growing questions regarding forwards. There was a gap at 2C, and overall a lack of depth in quality beyond the first line. Now, at a bare minimum, the roster questions have been answered. Kevin Hayes is your new second line center, and is looking like a fantastic addition to the team (as evidenced in this line by line recap). It is also looking like Joel Farabee will make the roster out of camp, which will add more quality to the...

Young Rangers Look to Avoid Faceoff Disaster

Kevin Hayes thinks the New York Rangers are going to miss him. In at least one aspect of the game, it won’t take long to find out if he’s right. The former Rangers center, now a member of the rival Philadelphia Flyers, sounded as if he still misses Broadway in an interview last week, more […] The post Young Rangers Look to Avoid Faceoff Disaster appeared first on The Hockey Writers.

Slap Shots: Flyers vs Rangers

Heather Barry - SB Nation NHL © The pics are prettier when the team wins, folks. The Philadelphia Flyers concluded their home preseason schedule with a division matchup against the New York Rangers. Carter Hart stopped every shot he faced in two periods, making it 25 saves without a goal surrendered in the preseason, Kevin Hayes scored his first goal with the Flyers against his old squad, and Jake Voracek recorded a three-point night as the Orange and Black finally provided a spark for head coach Alain Vigneault, beating the Rangers 4-1. The Flyers now head out on the road next week...
