The Daily Chum: Logan Couture scores on Drew Doughty, declines to gloat

Couture’s too classy, I guess. Fine. With time winding down, Logan Couture smacked the puck out of the Sharks defensive zone, just hoping to clear it as San Jose led 3-1 against its archrival. He did better than that. The puck sailed all the way down the end, and despite Drew Doughty’s best efforts, found its way into the back of the net. “I saw the blue line and saw the d-man was standing at the blue line and I just tried to lift it over him,” said Couture. “I didn’t even know I hit it hard enough to go in, so, I got lucky. That was Couture’s second goal of the night and...

“Spotter special” sends Sharks to top of Pacific

Brent Burns’ OT goal gave San Jose their fourth win on a five-game homestand. SAN JOSE — Sharks defenseman Brent Burns credited assistant coach Steve Spott as the inspiration for his game-winning goal in the Sharks’ 2-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes. “That’s a ‘Spotter’ special. Gotta throw him a plug,” Burns said. “[Logan Couture] made a great play on the entry. He had good poise with the puck, and brought that guy in, reversed it back, set it up. It was just a great play coming around the top.” So what, exactly is a ‘Spotter special?’ “It’s a secret,” Burns...

Garbutt goal confuses candid Couture, Sharks

Logan Couture gave an honest assessment of the Ducks’ controversial first goal. SAN JOSE — Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Garbutt’s first period goal in the Ducks’ 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks gave the Sharks a flashback to a memory that they’d like to forget. Ryan Garbutt came down the right wing with speed, and Sharks defenseman Brent Burns pushed Garbutt into a collision with goaltender Martin Jones. The puck went into the net as the result of the collision, and upon further review and amidst a coach’s challenge, it was determined the puck crossed the line before the net...

Quick Bite: Sharks lose game, Vlasic to injury

The Ducks ended the Sharks’ three game winning streak, as the Sharks also lost defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to an injury. SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks’ three-game winning streak ended and their injury woes got worse as Marc-Edouard Vlasic left after the second period in a 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at the SAP Center on Saturday night. The Sharks drew two penalties within the game’s first eight minutes, and scored the game’s first goal on their second power opportunity of the game. Logan Couture snapped a shot top shelf past Jonathan Bernier, and San Jose led 1-0 just 8:40...

Bottom Six Revisited: It’s time to make some changes

In Tomas Hertl’s absence, more can be done to maximize the bottom six. Let’s start with a basic assumption I’m making in this post: I like the top six as currently constructed. Patrick Marleau looks much more like his old self when up with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski and the Logan Couture, Joel Ward and Joonas Donskoi line kicks ass. So if you disagree with those basic ideas, the rest of this is probably a waste of time. With Tomas Hertl out for an extended time, the bottom six needs retooling. The Sharks started with the following lines in the bottom six for Friday’s game...

San Jose Sharks defeat Blackhawks; Jonathan Toews injured

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Logan Couture and Joel Ward scored in the first period and the San Jose Sharks gave the Blackhawks their second straight loss with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night.

Sharks get back on track against Devils

Goalie Martin Jones made 26 stops for his second shutout of the season and the Sharks got goals from four players en route to a 4-0 win over New Jersey on Monday night. Forwards Patrick Marleau, Logan Couture, Chris Tierney and defenseman Brent Burns scored goals to support Jones’ 15th career shutout. Coming off a season-long six-game road trip, and with only one idle day between games, the Sharks came out surprisingly strong. The Sharks struck shorthanded at 1:59 when Tierney’s wrist shot off the rush from the left circle found the back of the net. The Sharks continued to control the...

Quick Bite: Sharks dominate Devils

San Jose controlled the game from start to finish, and ended a three game losing streak. SAN JOSE — The Sharks ended a three-game losing streak, and opened their five-game homestand with a 4-0 win over the New Jersey Devils. Chris Tierney, Patrick Marleau, Logan Couture, and Brent Burns all scored, while Martin Jones stopped 26 shots in his second shutout of the season. San Jose controlled play from the opening puck drop, and generated quality chances within the game’s first minute-and-a-half. 104 seconds in, the Sharks were shorthanded after Matt Nieto interfered with Devils goaltender...

Kevin Labanc scores first NHL goal

Sharks’ rookie Kevin Labanc has scored his first NHL goal tonight against the St. Louis Blues. The goal came in the second period on a delayed penalty and tied the score 2-2. He sticks in the slot while the play develops near the St. Louis blue line and is then able to pick up a rebound and fire it past Jake Allen. Great to see his strong play early in this season rewarded with a goal. Here’s to many more goals in teal for Labanc. The Sharks currently trail 3-2 after two periods. Jaden Schwartz has two goals for the Blues and Logan Couture scored his first 5v5 goal of the season....

Sharks ice new lines ahead of road trip

In the Sharks’ last practice before a six game road trip, Pete DeBoer once again switched up his lines. SAN JOSE — A day before departing for a six game, 14-day road trip, San Jose Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer once again changed up his forward lines. Joel Ward skated on the top line alongside Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton, and Melker Karlsson slid into Ward’s spot on Logan Couture’s wing, while Joonas Donskoi filled in on the other wing. In the bottom six, Tomas Hertl moved back to center, flanked by Mikkel Boedker and Patrick Marleau. The fourth line, where Matt Nieto, Chris...

The Daily Chum: Miscues cost Sharks in loss

San Jose was just too sloppy against the Desert Dogs. Tuesday’s loss stings more because the Sharks left points on the table than because of the actual play on the ice. Yes, San Jose looked particularly sloppy in the second period and did not convert on many of its numerous chances in front of the Arizona net but the Sharks still controlled most of the play at even strength. The fourth line struggled and then got little to no playing time late in the game. Micheal Haley played only six minutes and the Logan Couture line looked less than terrific against Connor Murphy and Jakob Chycrun...
