Fear the Poll: Who belongs on the Sharks’ top power-play unit?

Fear the Poll: Who belongs on the Sharks’ top power-play unit?

Does it make sense to leave Joel Ward there? It seems San Jose head coach Pete DeBoer wants to get Joel Ward going by putting the forward on the Sharks’ top power-play unit. That might not be the right decision, but I want to see what you all think. Here’s how the top power-play unit looked in the Sharks’ loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday: Brent Burns — Joe Thornton — Logan Couture — Joe Pavelski — Joel Ward The only oddity here is Joel Ward, who has taken the place of Patrick Marleau on the top unit. San Jose has other options on the top unit, including rookies Kevin...

Notes & Quotes: Red Wings have need for speed, as Sharks have no need for Heed

Plus, Mikkel Boedker draws back into the lineup. SAN JOSE — In the Red Wings’ dominant, 3-0 win against the Sharks about ten weeks ago, one aspect of Detroit’s game stood out above all others. “Speed,” San Jose center Logan Couture said. “They’re a quick team. They skated around us. It could have been a lot worse than 3-0.” In addition to the scoreboard, the Red Wings controlled possession (57.5 FF%) and scoring chances (54.84%) in their win in late October. The win proved to be a bit of an aberration for this iteration of the Red Wings. This season, Detroit will not be...

Small Sample Size: Scoring chances and zone starts against the Minnesota Wild

Small Sample Size: Scoring chances and zone starts against the Minnesota Wild

These things were related as the Sharks collapsed. I’m a big fan of Kevin Labanc, but hoo-boy did the forward get roasted in the scoring chance department against Minnesota last night. He, along with linemate Logan Couture, finished with a team-worst 28.57 and 37.50 scoring-chance for percentage, respectively. That means when they were on the ice only 28 percent and 37 percent of the scoring chances that took place went in favor of team teal. For a pair of guys who otherwise look pretty darn good, that’s a serious problem. That’s about the way the whole night went as the Sharks...

San Jose Sharks fall 2-1 to Kings in overtime

Tanner Pearson capped a 2-on-1 break with a game-winning goal 58 seconds into sudden death as the Kings beat the banged-up Sharks 2-1 at sold-out SAP Center. Pearson drilled in Jeff Carter’s cross-ice feed with only defenseman Justin Braun back for the Sharks after San Jose’s Logan Couture committed a costly turnover in the visitors’ zone. Considering San Jose was playing without one-third of its blue line crew — Marc-Edouard Vlasic and David Schlemko are sidelined with injuries — the Sharks were searching for silver linings as they maintained a two-point lead over Anaheim in the...

Quick Bite: Jones, Sharks steal win in Anaheim

Martin Jones made 34 saves in the Sharks’ win. Martin Jones stopped 34 of 36 shots as the San Jose Sharks escaped the Honda Center with a 3-2 overtime win over the rival Anaheim Ducks. San Jose played Anaheim evenly for the game’s first handful of minutes, and scored the game’s first goal. Mikkel Boedker’s net front pass eluded Logan Couture and found Paul Martin, who shot the puck into an open net. Couture was pushed into Ducks goaltender John Gibson by Anaheim’s defensemen, and Randy Carlyle opted not to challenge the goal. The Sharks held an advantage on the scoreboard, but...

Senators’ Mike Hoffman suspended two games for cross-checking Logan Couture

The NHL wrapped up a fairly busy afternoon of suspensions on Friday by handing another one down to Ottawa Senators forward Mike Hoffman for his actions against a San Jose Sharks winger on Wednesday. Hoffman was less than pleased with Sharks forward Logan Couture shoving him to the ice in the third period. Hoffman retrieved the puck, got up and made a bee-line for Couture.
