Senators top Sharks in San Jose

Kelly picked up a bouncing puck that neither Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic nor Justin Braun could handle at center to break in alone on Martin Jones. Burns wrist shot from the top of the right circle sailed over the left glove of Ottawa goalie Mike Condon while the teams were skating 4-on-4. San Jose defenseman Paul Martin earned his 300th career point on the lone assist. Logan Couture continued his recent production on the power play as the Sharks’ center scored his seventh goal in 10 games. With Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson in the box for holding, Joe Pavelski spotted...

Vlasic, Karlsson, Dillon in as Sharks look for first win against desert dogs

Melker Karlsson will play his first game in over two weeks. SAN JOSE — Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Melker Karlsson will play tonight against the Arizona Coyotes, San Jose Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer said. Brenden Dillon was a full participant in the morning skate, and will also draw back into the lineup. Vlasic missed the thrid period of San Jose’s 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, but practiced yesterday and participated in the morning skate. Dillon was a late scratch on Saturday due to illness. Karlsson has not played since he injured his left ankle against the Tampa Bay...

Notes & Quotes: Injury updates, and DeBoer’s thoughts on Carpenter, Boedker

Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Melker Karlsson, and Tommy Wingels all practiced today. SAN JOSE — Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Melker Karlsson were full participants in the San Jose Sharks’ practice this morning, while Tommy Wingels participated in some drills. Barclay Goodrow was sent down to the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda for the second time since Friday morning in a corresponding move. Vlasic joked that he missed the third period of Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks because his skates blew up and he “didn’t have another pair,” but said that he was okay today. “I’m not going to...

Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s penalty differential pickle

Yes, he’s taking more penalties than usual this year. I’m not the first to notice Marc-Edouard Vlasic seems to be taking more penalties this year than in years past and frankly I’ve had enough people ask me about it on Twitter that I don’t know who to credit with the idea. So let’s keep it simple: yes, Vlasic is taking more penalties this year. In 5v5 play, Vlasic has taken six penalties and drawn one. The ratio isn’t particularly concerning nor surprising. As a defender, Vlasic is prone to take more penalties than he’ll draw; the issue, such as it is, for Vlasic this year...

Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s injury could provide opportunity for Dylan DeMelo

A silver lining on what would be a very dark cloud. Marc-Edouard Vlasic left Saturday’s game early with a yet to be disclosed injury. Pete DeBoer declined to comment further following the game and the San Jose camp was expectedly quiet on Sunday. We’ll likely hear something today, though there’s no guarantee it’ll be anything of substance. The Sharks are in trouble if Vlasic is out long term, obviously, but Dylan DeMelo is one player who would benefit from such an absence. DeMelo played in just his second game of the season on Saturday and he drew into the lineup due to the...

Quick Bite: Sharks lose game, Vlasic to injury

The Ducks ended the Sharks’ three game winning streak, as the Sharks also lost defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to an injury. SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks’ three-game winning streak ended and their injury woes got worse as Marc-Edouard Vlasic left after the second period in a 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at the SAP Center on Saturday night. The Sharks drew two penalties within the game’s first eight minutes, and scored the game’s first goal on their second power opportunity of the game. Logan Couture snapped a shot top shelf past Jonathan Bernier, and San Jose led 1-0 just 8:40...

Throwback Thursday: The trade that got the Sharks Marc-Edouard Vlasic

13 lucky years and one day ago the Sharks made a franchise-changing move. The Sharks play great defense in no small part due to the contributions of one Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The Canadian continues to lead the way on San Jose’s blue line, routinely tasked with shutting down the opposition’s most dangerous players. Without Vlasic, the Sharks would be a much worse team. We have a 2003 trade to thank for acquiring this generational player. Lest I take credit for this tidbit of historical trivia, here’s the tweet that inspired this post. On this day in 2003, the Sharks traded Miika...

The Daily Chum: Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Justin Braun shut down Steven Stamkos

Oh, and Vlasic scored a goal. I’m notoriously critical of Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s shooting ability. It is not very good, at least by NHL defender standards, but that’s small potatoes given his incredible defensive ability. It doesn’t hurt that despite not having much of a shot, Vlasic already has three goals this year. Yes, that puts the 2016-17 season in a tie for seventh in best goal scoring years for Vlasic in his 11-year career and his 0.2 goals per game would be the best of his career if he keeps it up. He probably won’t, nor does he need to, as this offensive output is just...

Capitals vs. Sharks Third Period Thread

The Sharks struck first, as your-favorite-pickle-and-mine, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, bounced a slap shot from the point off the substantial rump of Karl Alzner to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Then, will just over two minutes left in the frame, stranded-through-hiker-awaiting-rescue Brent Burns walked into the cirle and ripped a wrist shot past Branden Holtby to make it 2-0 Sharks. Third period ahead... Tweets from @JapersRink/tweet-tweeters
