The Daily Chum: Evaluating who is still healthy on the Sharks’ blue line

The Daily Chum: Evaluating who is still healthy on the Sharks’ blue line

Hint: Not this guy. The injury bug is really testing the Sharks’ blue line depth. As soon as Marc-Edouard Vlasic returned, Dylan DeMelo was gone. Then Paul Martin missed Wednesday night’s contest against the Calgary Flames at the last moment, forcing the Sharks to skate with five defenders. To recap, the following defenders were not available for Wednesday’s game: David Schlemko, Paul Martin, Dylan DeMelo. The good news: Martin is likely a day-to-day situation and will probably return to the lineup on Saturday and Tim Heed, who made his NHL debut on Wednesday, looked pretty darn...

Sharks vs. Flames: Lines, gamethread and where to watch

No Dylan DeMelo as the Sharks look for an Alberta sweep. Here’s what we know as the Sharks get ready to face off against the Calgary Flames at 6:30 p.m. PT in the ScotiaBank Saddledome: Not a whole lot. We know Dylan DeMelo will not play tonight after playing only four minutes against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, but we don’t know who will fill in for him nor do we know if Marc-Edouard Vlasic will be good to go nor do we know who’s starting in net for San Jose. I do have some educated guesses, though. Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer will likely start Aaron Dell in net given a...

Sharks vs. Oilers: Lines, gamethread and where to watch

The return of the Vlasic Marc-Edouard Vlasic seems ready to make his triumphant return to the San Jose Sharks’ lineup tonight while Tim Heed might make a surprise debut as the Sharks play in Rogers Place for the first time. Friend of the Blog Kevin Kurz has the details in his gameday post ahead of an interesting Pacific tilt. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. PT. Where to watch / listen in San Jose CSN-California / Stream for free on NHL.com today only / KFOX 98.5 I was on Edmonton radio this morning with Lowetide to talk Sharks hockey, including San Jose’s three All-Star selections. Marc-Edouard Vlasic to make flight to Alberta

David Schlemko will stay in San Jose We’ve got good news and bad news on the injury front from Acquaintance of the Blog Curtis Pashelka. Marc-Edouard Vlasic will make the trip to Alberta to battle the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. He’ll likely be a gametime decision against the Oilers on Tuesday night. Vlasic is making the trip to Edmonton, but not Schlemko. Vlasic, it appears, will be a game time decision tomorrow #SJSharks— Curtis Pashelka (@CurtisPashelka) January 9, 2017 The bad news? David Schlemko will stay behind in the Bay Area. Vlasic is recovering from taking a...

Sharks' Vlasic dealing with 'a few fractures' in his face

SAN JOSE Sharks stalwart defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic returned to the ice on Friday, exactly one week after a frightening incident when a slap shot by Philadelphias Shayne Gostisbehere deflected into his face.I feel pretty good, considering I got a slap shot to the face, Vlasic said, although he later added that hes still in a lot of pain.Speaking publicly for the first time, Vlasic said the puck caused a few fractures and some nerves that are damaged. He wasnt told specifically where the damage was done, but pointed to his nasal/cheekbone area.

San Jose reassigns Tim Heed to Barracuda

San Jose reassigns Tim Heed to Barracuda

This likely means Marc-Edouard Vlasic is ready to return. Tim Heed’s time with the San Jose Sharks is over. The team returned him to the San Jose Barracuda after a one-game ride in the press box, possibly signaling the return of Marc-Edouard Vlasic to the Sharks’ lineup. That return can’t come a moment too soon. The Sharks struggled in three games without Vlasic, posting an 0-3 record in three one-goal losses. With David Schlemko very much on the shelf, San Jose can use all the help it can get on the blue line. Heed heads back to the Barracuda where he is scoring 1.11 points per game....

The Daily Chum: Sharks need to start rolling four lines again

The Daily Chum: Sharks need to start rolling four lines again

Shortening the bench can’t be the answer. The Sharks managed to get a point against the Kings on Tuesday night despite playing without Marc-Edouard Vlasic, David Schlemko and Tomas Hertl. Losing to L.A. will never feel satisfying, but San Jose should look at the silver lining in what turned into a halfway decent performance after a fine third period of action. Martin Jones kept the Sharks alive through two periods and San Jose turned on the jets in the third. They couldn’t find a go-ahead goal after Jeff Carter knotted things up on the power play, but San Jose applied most of the...

San Jose Sharks fall 2-1 to Kings in overtime

Tanner Pearson capped a 2-on-1 break with a game-winning goal 58 seconds into sudden death as the Kings beat the banged-up Sharks 2-1 at sold-out SAP Center. Pearson drilled in Jeff Carter’s cross-ice feed with only defenseman Justin Braun back for the Sharks after San Jose’s Logan Couture committed a costly turnover in the visitors’ zone. Considering San Jose was playing without one-third of its blue line crew — Marc-Edouard Vlasic and David Schlemko are sidelined with injuries — the Sharks were searching for silver linings as they maintained a two-point lead over Anaheim in the...

Sharks vs. Kings Preview: Shorthanded San Jose looks for revenge

Sharks vs. Kings Preview: Shorthanded San Jose looks for revenge

No Marc-Edouard Vlasic, perhaps David Schlemko in rematch against Los Angeles The Sharks took one of their toughest defeats of the season in terms of possession on New Year’s Eve against the Kings. The scoreboard read just 3-2, a testament to a fine game from Martin Jones, but San Jose took a beating without Marc-Edouard Vlasic in the lineup. Things might get even tougher for the Sharks on Tuesday when San Jose hosts the Kings in a rematch on NBC Sports at 7 p.m. David Schlemko did not participate in San Jose’s practice on Monday as Mirco Mueller got recalled to the Sharks, perhaps a...

Sharks' Vlasic out after taking puck to the face

Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic will miss Saturdays game in Los Angeles after getting hurt on Friday night against Philadelphia.Vlasic was hit in the face with a Shayne Gostisbehere slap shot with 30 seconds to go in the Sharks 2-0 win over the Flyers at SAP Center. The team is reportedly calling him day-to-day.In a text message to CSNs Brodie Brazil, Vlasic said: Im doing better than yesterday. Still in pain but will eventually make a full recovery. Oh, and I still have all my beautiful real teeth.

Vlasic unlikely to play Saturday vs Kings - Marc-Edouard Vlasic (D) San Jose Sharks

After taking a puck to the face against the Flyers yesterday, Marc-Edouard Vlasic is unlikely to take on the Kings on Saturday.

Dell gets first shutout as Sharks top Flyers

Aaron Dell posted his first career shutout as the Sharks continued their mastery of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 2-0 win at SAP Center on Friday. Patrick Marleau scored a first-period power-play goal and defenseman Justin Braun added insurance late in the third to provide Dell with his offensive support. Nursing a 1-0 lead late, Braun pinched, took a cross-ice feed from captain Joe Pavelski and wired his second goal of the season at 15:23. Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic needed assistance off the ice with 29.9 seconds left after getting struck in the head by a slap shot by...

The Daily Chum: What zone starts tell us about the Sharks

The Daily Chum: What zone starts tell us about the Sharks

We see who gets the toughest assignments for San Jose. Looking at relative possession numbers can be a good way to get a feel for how a member of the Sharks is playing this season, but it can’t tell you everything. That’s because Pete DeBoer, like most NHL coaches, puts his best players on the ice in tougher situations than others. DeBoer doesn’t match lines with the same intensity that Todd McLellan does (which you might have noticed on Friday night) but he does make sure Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun see the toughest competition every night. You certainly noticed that...
