Schaller should be fined for hitting Methot's hand with his face

Schaller should be fined for hitting Methot's hand with his face

How can the NHL let this happen again????? During last night's game, the referees stepped in and took a stand against a dangerous act, standing up for what's right and serving as a model of justice and light. After an icing call, Noel Acciari got tangled up with a few Senators. Things escalated when Tim Schaller joined the fray, as he quickly turned up the heat with his reckless act. Locked in a tussle with Marc Methot, Schaller viciously hit his face off of Methot's gloved hand with reckless abandon and no regard for Methot's safety. Schaller received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty...

Full Coverage Round One, Game Three: Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins

The series switches to Boston Marc Methot returned for game 2, but played only 18:12 - the lowest of any blue liner that didn't suffer a game ending injury, and far less than what would normally be expected of him when the team is down to 5 D. Should he be in the lineup, or kept out until he can carry a normal load? Trevor: I wasn't able to watch the game (besides PVRing the final 10 mins and OT), so I can't really comment on how Methot looked. However, if he's still not 100%, I see nothing wrong with putting Freddy Claesson in his place. The only problem is, Ottawa might replace him with...

Senators’ Methot could return from mangled finger injury on Saturday

It took about 12 stitches to reattach and Methot has yet to return to his role as a steady defender along the blueline with the Ottawa Senators as his pinky continues to heal

No Lineup Answers from Morning Skate

No Lineup Answers from Morning Skate

Boucher keeping us guessing The few lineup questions to come out of yesterday’s practice weren’t really answered with today’s morning skate. Marc Methot participated, but didn’t look 100% comfortable. Boucher confirmed that he can play, but that they might want to give him a few more days to heal so it will be a game time decision. Not much zip on Methot's passes this morning. #senators— Chris Stevenson (@CJ_Stevenson) April 12, 2017 For the forwards there wasn’t much in the way of line rushes to go off of, but there is the question of Tommy Wingels, Chris Kelly and Ryan...

Five Thoughts for Friday

Five Thoughts for Friday

Freddy Claesson, Ben Harpur, pending free agents and more! No time to waste. Thoughts. Five of them. Now! Freddy Claesson on the First Pairing Oh, what a difference a year makes. You could make the argument that Freddy Claesson is a top-six defender on this team. You could make the argument that he is a top-four defender on this team. Hell, many people won't disagree you if you say he is a top-three defender on this team. And now 80 games into the 2016-17 campaign, it's looking like Claesson is the best partner for Erik Karlsson on the top pairing. Though Marc Methot's defensive expertise...

Full coverage, Game 78: Ottawa Senators @ Detroit Red Wings

Full coverage of the game between the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings on 3 April 2017. The reeling Ottawa Senators will play the Detroit Red Wings with a maximum of three NHL quality defencemen and none of the top three variety. But much like Saturday, the game needs to be played so be played it shall! In addition to missing Erik Karlsson, Marc Methot and Cody Ceci, forward Zack Smith is also out for the remainder of the regular season. In the worst case scenario, the Senators need six points in their remaining five games to clinch a playoff spot if the Lightning win out. Detroit...

Game 77 preview: Ottawa Senators @ Winnipeg Jets

A preview of the game between the Ottawa Senators and the Winnipeg Jets on 1 April 2017. The Ottawa Senators enter the fourth game of a five game road trip still looking for their first win, when they visit the Winnipeg Jets tonight. Without Erik Karlsson, the Senators surrendered without a fight against the Wild and lost 5-1 on Thursday night. The Jets have been eliminated from playoff contention but did come back to win 4-3 against Anaheim on Thursday. Both Karlsson and Zack Smith have returned to Ottawa and presumably will play not play against Detroit on Monday either. With Marc Methot...

Methot Injury an Opportunity for Claesson

There were few positives about Marc Methot’s gruesome injury against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It left him without a fingertip – and, on a related note, left many fans running for the toilet. It put the Ottawa Senators down a top-pairing defenceman and, as Eugene Melnyk so eloquently noted, Sidney Crosby went unpunished for the slash […]

Crosby Didn’t Spear Anybody

If you didn’t have an opinion on Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby before this week, chances are you have one now. He’s under everyone’s microscope for a slash to the hand of Ottawa Senator Marc Methot on Thursday that left the big defenceman’s fingertip bloodied and dangling. The gruesome injury created the argument over whether […]

Sunday's Dump & Chase: Wild West

Hockey has always had a loose relationship with "rules", best illustrated by how fighting is an integral part of the game yet also a penalty. This past week has been a disaster, though. Where Should Fredrik Claesson fit in the lineup?

Where Should Fredrik Claesson fit in the lineup?

With Marc Methot out for the foreseeable future, what could the D pairings look like? With one slash last night, the Sens left D situation got a fair bit shallower. Marc Methot will be out for weeks, which means Fredrik Claesson is likely to draw in to the lineup. The question becomes where, and how the defensive pairings will get shuffled around. The first, obvious thought is to pair up Claesson with Chris Wideman. At 84 minutes of 5 on 5 together, Wideman has been the most common partner for Freddy this season. They’ve done reasonably well together too. While they have benefited from...
