2013 IIHF Men's World Championship begin in Sweden, Finland

Raw Charge — Today the IIHF Men's World Championships begin in Stockholm, Sweden, and Helsinki, Finland (dual hosts again this year). This year five Tampa Bay Lightning players are participating: Ben Bishop, Matt Carle, and Nate Thompson for the USA, Steven Stamkos for Canada, and goaltending prospect Jaroslav Janus for Slovakia. Contrary to rumors, prospect Andrey Vasilevskiy is not playing for Team Russia in the tournament,. Teams from 16 countries are divided into two groups for the round-robin-style first round. Stastny named captain of Team USA

Mile High Hockey — USA Hockey announced today that Avalanche center Paul Stastny has been given the captaincy for the 2013 U.S. Men's National Team in the upcoming IIHF World Championships. Matt Carle and Nate Thompson of the Tampa Bay Lightning will be the alternate captains. Stastny has a long and storied history with USA Hockey. He's played on Team USA on three separate occasions, including the 2010 Olympic team. St. Petersburg Times — The Lightning on Thursday had three players named to the initial group of 15 who will play for the United States at next month's world championship in Sweden and Finland: goaltender Ben Bishop, center Nate Thompson and defenseman Matt Carle.
