The state of the Coyotes' goaltending system

Who are the best goalies in the Coyotes organization now and possibly in the future? Mike Smith is number one. That is a fact and will probably remain so for at least another year or two. He is 32 years old and his contract runs through 2018-2019, with a significant AAV cap hit of $5.6 million. A reliable NHL backup is no small matter though, (just ask the New York Rangers) and Smith has not exactly been carrying the load well during his Coyotes tenure. Other than his exceptional 2011-2012 season, in which he had a .930 Sv% and was a Vezina candidate, Smith has had Sv% of .910, .915 and...

Smith survives shooting gallery, Coyotes collapse under Canucks

The Arizona Coyotes lived dangerously against Vancouver and despite Mike Smith's best effort, lost yet again. The Coyotes were hoping to end a seven game losing streak against the team they last beat in the place they last won. Spoiler alert, it didn't happen. Things started bad right from the get go, with Arizona allowing the Vancouver Canucks to take control from the opening face-off. Vancouver started the game outshooting Arizona 10-1 in the opening ten minutes. Thankfully for the Coyotes faithful in Gila River Arena, Mike Smith kept the Coyotes in the game, stopping all 10. Arizona...

Who's Hot, Who's Not: Smit-tastic

While the Coyotes steadily sink (such a shame!), their netminder continues his campaign to prove that 2011-12 wasn't an anomaly. The Hot 1. Mike Smith Two and two-thirds of Smitty's three games in net this week were elite by all standards. The Coyotes starter single handedly kept the squad in games against the Kings and Blackhawks, and did his best to do the same against the Devils before the floodgates opened in the third period. These are positive signs for Smith, who is set to be "the guy" between the pipes for the next few years in Arizona. 2. Race to the Bottom Each week brings...

Arizona fights and fights, but can't steal one away

Mike Smith plays out of his mind, but it isn't enough as the Blackhawks beat the Coyotes 2-1. In what was an unexpectedly close game, the Arizona Coyotes fall to the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1. Tobias Rieder scored and Mike Smith stopped 43-of-45 shots in the losing effort, and Brad Richards and Andrew Shaw scored for Chicago. Arizona drops their 14th in 15 games, and the Blackhawks win a game to start their road trip. Chicago dominated play for most of the game, but Arizona found a way to remain pesky and keep it close - mostly due to the otherworldly play of their goaltender. Smith's...

Is Mike Smith's season an aberration or a sign of things to come?

Mike Smith is having one of the worst seasons of his career. Where does this season rank holistically in his NHL tenure? It's hard to tell the story of the 2014-15 Arizona Coyotes and discount the poor play of Mike Smith. Yes, the offense struggles to score goals, and yes, the defense is young and inexperienced. But Smitty is now 11-32-5 with a 3.25 GAA and a .897 save percentage. The only goalies (greater than 20 appearances) with worst save percentages than Smith are Ray Emery and Viktor Fasth. That's not good company to keep. When we look at Smith's entire NHL career, we see only two...

Carey Price outduels Mike Smith as the Canadiens defeat the Coyotes

Arizona lost a close contest at Gila River Arena Saturday night. Throwback Night may have been Thursday, but tonight's performance was reminiscent of the way the Arizona Coyotes have played throughout the Tippett years. Unfortunately, their offense was unable to reward the team's stout defensive performance. Carey Price recorded his 7th shutout of the season as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Coyotes 2-0 Saturday night at Gila River Arena. The win capped off a 1-2-1 West Coast road trip for the Canadiens. Unlike the Vancouver game, where Arizona started strong, the Habs took it to the...
