Ups and Downs: Week 19

Milan Michalek is Up, Chris Phillips is Down, a look back at the week that was. Pretty good week for the Senators performance-wise (though not for the tanking crowd). A win against Buffalo, a comeback, overtime loss to Pittsburgh, and a blowout victory against Edmonton resulted in five out of a possible six points this week. Biggest Gain: Milan Michalek Perhaps it's a little surprising to see Michalek here, given his struggles for much of the season, but he's been much better of late. This was probably his best week of the season: he scored the game winner against Buffalo and had two goals...

NHL results, Feb. 13

Former Sharks winger Milan Michalek had two goals and an assist, leading the host Ottawa Senators over the Edmonton Oilers 7-2 on Saturday. Robin Lehner, making his eighth straight start for Ottawa, stopped 25 shots. Viktor Fasth allowed three goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Richard Bachman, who gave up four goals on 27 shots. Ceci beat Fasth from the face-off circle, and then Turris finished a 2-on-1 with Michalek for his 12th goal of the season. Dallas Stars scoring leader Tyler Seguin will miss three to six weeks with a right knee injury suffered when he was checked below...

For all the excitement about the team's future, there seem to be players that don't fit into that future. This is the third in a five-part series looking at what to do with these spare parts. Ottawa's future looks bright, there's no question. The problem is, this team also has a lot of players who don't fit with this forward-thinking model. You've got the Cup Run 2007TM leftovers of Chris Phillips and Chris Neil. Both have had long careers with this franchise, but both are quite ineffective in their roles today. There's Milan Michalek, who has two more years after this one at $4-million....
