The backwards state of the Blackhawks front office in wake of trading Nick Leddy

Who really drives the boat, and who's just along for the ride? (Ed. note: Hey folks, Adam Hess is one of our new contributors at Second City Hockey for the upcoming season, and here's his first feature on the Quenneville/Bowman dynamic re: the Nick Leddy trade. We're happy to have Adam aboard, and I'm sure he's thrilled to be here as well!) We're nearly a week into the NHL season, long past the Blackhawks trade of Nick Leddy, and yet I still cannot get over it. In my opinion, the trade of Leddy was the wrong move made for the wrong reasons. You might remember that at the draft in June,...

Like white on rice. Happy Columbus day. Whether you're reading this at home or stuck at work, we hope your day is a good one. Islanders links Arthur Staple gets the low down on bulldog Nikolay Kulemin and how he fits with linemates Frans Nielsen and Josh Bailey. [New$day] Goalie Kent Simpson, who was acquired from the Blackhawks with Nick Leddy, has been assigned to the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL. [Loveland Reporter-Herald] The Sound Tigers got their first win of the season Sunday against St. John's. Harry Zolnierczyk had two goals and Sebastian Collberg scored his first AHL goal....

Five thoughts on Hawks' opening roster

The Chicago Blackhawks turned in their roster to the NHL office on Tuesday. Here are some thoughts on the team they'll start the season with this year: 1. Nick Leddy being traded wasn't a surprise, but Kyle Cumiskey and Trevor van Riemsdyk being the defensemen kept up to replace Leddy was one. Adam Clendening, Klas Dahlbeck and Stephen Johns were all given better chances of making the team when camp started, and Cumiskey and van Riemsdyk overtook them.

Johnny Boychuk, Nick Leddy excited about playing major roles with Islanders

Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy arrived on Long Island on Sunday, put on their gear and practice jerseys Monday morning and went right to work: Boychuk with the Islanders' first power-play unit, Leddy with the second for pre-practice special-teams duty.

Wild Fans Need to Just

Wild Fans Need to Just "Leddy Go"

It has been four, almost five years since "the trade", and still a certain segment of the fan base has kept Nick Leddy on a little pedestal in their hearts. Folks, it's time to put the past in the past and move on. There are three things Minnesotans talk about (not including the understandable complaints regarding the struggles of being a Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves fan): fishing, the weather and Nick Leddy. If you’re asking who this "Nick Leddy" character is, it’s almost guaranteed you’ve been living under a rock the past five years or so. The State of Hockey has an almost...

Blackhawks player previews: The defensemen after the Leddy deal

Blackhawks player previews: The defensemen after the Leddy deal

Chicago's defense appears to be a work-in-progress after the Nick Leddy trade. Let's take a look at the eight guys who stand to be in the mix for opening night. I wanted to wait to put together the player previews for the Blackhawks' defensemen, for good reason. The team traded one of its stalwarts, Nick Leddy, to the Islanders on Saturday, and now the group projects to look significantly different next season. Things should still be fine assuming no major injuries, but make no mistake, losing Leddy isn't a good thing. As we discovered Sunday, Chicago plans to enter next season with eight...

Defensemen ready to fill Leddy's skates

CHICAGO -- Kyle Cumiskey, David Rundblad and Trevor van Riemsdyk all understood what it meant for them when the Chicago Blackhawks traded defenseman Nick Leddy over the weekend. Leddy had locked down a defenseman spot in the Blackhawks lineup for much of the last four seasons, and that spot was opened again when he was dealt to the New York Islanders on Saturday. Cumiskey, Rundblad and van Riemsdyk now have a chance to fill that void as all three defensemen were still on the team’s active roster as of Sunday afternoon.

Blackhawks react to Leddy's departure

CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was sad to say goodbye to defenseman Nick Leddy, who was traded to the New York Islanders on Saturday, but he was glad Leddy finally knew his fate. Shaw felt the trade rumors, which had been circulating since the summer, had been weighing on Leddy. “He just wanted it to happen,” Shaw said after practice on Sunday. “He was sick of just waiting. Obviously he’s sad to go, but he’s excited about the new adventure and he’ll be missed in the room.

Panthers Made 'Serious' Offers for Boychuk, Leddy

The Winnipeg Jets aren't the only team to leak that they were pursuing one of the two defensemen acquired by the New York Islanders on Saturday. Dale Tallon, general manager of the Florida Panthers, said he was in "serious negotiations" for both Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy, but the Islanders beat them to both, as the pieces needed "just didn't make sense" to the Panthers. That report comes from George Richards of the Miami Herald, who was covering the Panthers preseason game against the Lightning on the night of the trades.

Chicago Blackhawks trade Eden Prairie native Nick Leddy to New York Islanders

The anticipated departure of one of the Chicago Blackhawks' regulars came to fruition Saturday when the team traded Eden Prairie native and former Gophers defenseman Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders for three prospects.

Blackhawks trade Nick Leddy, Kent Simpson to Islanders

Nick Leddy is now a member of the New York Islanders after the Blackhawks completed a five-player deal on Saturday. Here's all your information on the big trade. We'll have more on this if it develops tonight (otherwise I'm digging into Shadow of Mordor), but apparently Coach Q gave every indication after the game that Nick Leddy wasn't a part of the Blackhawks' future. That might be disappointing to some, but Rozsival was a weak trade candidate and the team always was partial to Oduya. So it appears Leddy is the odd man...

New York Islanders beat out Winnipeg Jets for Nick Leddy

In their double-trade Saturday, the New York Islanders paid more for Nick Leddy than they did for Johnny Boychuk. Part of that is because Leddy is younger, and his rights are controllable for at least three more years; Boychuk, 30, will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. But another reason could be the competition the Islanders had for Leddy. Winnipeg scribe Gary Lawless reports that the Jets had a "strong package" on the table for Leddy, as well as connections thanks to GM Kevin Cheveldayoff being a former Chicago employee. Islanders prospect Ville Pokka, and the option to have TJ...

Hawks banking on others replacing Leddy

The good news for the Chicago Blackhawks today is they’re finally under the salary cap. It's something they've been waiting awhile for. The bad news is they’re now without one of their top defensemen. Whether the Blackhawks made the right move in trading defenseman Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders for prospects on Saturday will ultimately be determined by how this season unfolds. If the Blackhawks are successful and make another run at a Stanley Cup, the trade will be forgotten.

Blackhawks trade Nick Leddy, Kent Simpson to Islanders for prospects

The Hawks trade 2013 Cup winner Leddy to go under the cap. The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to trade defenseman Nick Leddy and goaltender Kent Simpson to the New York Islanders for a trio of prospects, reports Arthur Staple of Newsday. In exchange, the Hawks receive defensemen Ville Pokka and T.J. Brennan and goaltender Andres Nilsson. The Hawks were about $2.2 million over the salary cap entering this season, which begins in Dallas next Thursday. Leddy is in the final season of his current contract, which carries a $2.7 million cap hit. Leddy, 23, won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2013...
