Red Wings select Dennis Cholowski at 20th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft

BUFFALO, NY — The Red Wings have selected defenseman Dennis Cholowski at 20th overall, a pick that was acquired from Arizona in the Pavel Datsyuk trade earlier this evening. Cholowski is noted as an offensive defensemen with a lot of raw talent. It was an unexpected pick, but they got their defenseman. He's an extremely good skater, though he will need some work with lateral movement. I'd say he's a bit of a reach at 20th overall, and most would agree, but he is a good player that can be developed into a top-four NHL guy. Red Wings trade Pavel Datsyuk and 16th overall pick to Arizona Coyotes for 20th overall, 53rd overall, and Joe Vitale

BUFFALO, NY -- The Red Wings have traded Pavel Datsyuk and 16th overall to the Arizona Coyotes for 20th overall, 53rd overall and Joe Vitale. Real interesting move here, as they could have had Jakob Chychrun, who is considered to be one of the Draft's best defensemen. At first it was a head-scratcher, but now is seeming to be like a real favorable move for the Red Wings. There was a lot of question as to what Ken Holland would have to give up to move Datsyuk's $7.5 million cap hit, and a lot of the names hovering around speculation were that of Tomas Jurco, Teemu Pulkkinen, and even Andreas...

Pavel Datsyuk and Separating the Player From the Individual

Pavel Datsyuk the player is an unmitigated masterpiece, but I can't help but think back to what he said nearly three years ago I'm 22 years old and for most of my time being a Red Wing hockey fan, I watched Pavel Datsyuk make magic. He made Marty Turco look helpless. He created a void in the space-time continuum against Nashville. He made Logan Couture look like he pooped his pants--on his birthday no less. While Henrik Zetterberg will always hold my heart as my favorite Red Wing from this past decade, Pavel is just as much a part Red Wing hockey to me and I don't think I'll ever be in...

Pavel Datsyuk, Like Sanders and Fedorov, Didn't Owe Us His Choice

Datsyuk is the most recent on a legendary list of seemingly premature Detroit departures. Frustratingly we can only accept their decisions. Pavel Datsyuk's retirement has solicited a fine powered mix of positive and negative weighing in on his character and how the manner of his retirement effects his legacy. While I don't believe Datsyuk and former Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders are exactly comparable in legend, still any debate about retirement determining a player's character takes me back to 1999. I was an overfed 12 year old inexplicably listening to 1130 WDFN "The Fan" around...

Who will be Detroit's Next Alternate Captain?

Datsyuk's departure for Russia leaves a void in the Red Wings leadership. Who will step into this vacancy? With Pavel Datsyuk’s retirement from the NHL, the Red Wings have a void to fill not only at forward, but amongst the officially designated leaders of the team as well. Currently, only Zetterberg and Kronwall are captains and the Red Wings have traditionally gone with three official on-ice leaders. Listed below are the most likely candidates (in my humble opinion) to fill this void and an argument for each. Justin Abdelkader According to many fans, good ol’ Abby is the first in...

Sunday's Dump & Chase: Do Svidaniya

Pavel Datsyuk announced his retirement from the NHL on Saturday, as expected. The future of his cap hit is still very much in the air, though. That's a crippling amount of dead cap space, but the Red Wings would have to move decent assets in exchange for getting it off their books for just one season. Maybe Poile can work some magic.
