MacKinnon: Ryan Smyth's final boost a gift to Edmonton Oilers

EDMONTON — If he hasn’t done so already, Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz should transmit the following message, accompanied by flowers and much else, to Ryan Smyth: “Infinite thanks, Smytty, we needed that.” At the tail end of a dismal season, the Oilers organization desperately needed some love and they got it by the bucket load Saturday night, even if it was adoration by association.

Jim Matheson: Heart-and-soul Edmonton Oilers veteran Ryan Smyth's number belongs in the Rexall Place rafters

EDMONTON — I know the Edmonton Oilers likely won’t hang a jersey in the rafters unless he’s in the Hall of Fame (that includes ‘The Voice’ Rod PhilLips, the Oilers’ former longtime radio play-by-play man), save for Al Hamilton, the best-ever WHA Oiler. But it’s time the team relaxes its internal rules.

Tears for Ryan Smyth, jeers for the Canucks in 5-2 loss

EDMONTON — The only crying Saturday was by Ryan Smyth. The Canucks may be sad to watch but they aren’t worth tears. Really, the Canucks aren’t worth much of anything at all these days, except for a high draft pick. And, to be honest, that’s the best gift they could have given their fans this April.

Kings weigh in on Smyth’s retirement

Word broke while the Kings were in Edmonton that Ryan Smyth will retire at the conclusion of the 2013-14 NHL season. His game tonight against the Vancouver Canucks will be the final game of his National Hockey League career. Smyth totaled 45 goals and 100 points in 149 regular season games with Los Angeles and still retains close ties with players, coaches and staff members of the team. Though his bond with Kings fans is not as strong after having requested a trade in the 2011 off-season and revealing that the Kings subsequently winning the Stanley Cup was “tough to [...]

Oilers' 5-2 win over Canucks marks end of Smyth's career

In the end, there were flaws in the Edmonton Oilers’ game, just as there have been since the season opened. But Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks not only marked the end of another substandard season, it also marked the end of Ryan Smyth’s career.

The View From Edmonton

EDMONTON JOURNAL Jim Matheson: Lacklustre Oilers come up empty against Kings Over the last 20 games against the Kings, the Oilers have won one in regulation. This season, they were out-shot by exactly 100 shots (186-86) by the Kings, reinforcing coach Dallas Eakins’ statement Thursday morning that “there’s a laundry list of challenges when you’re playing a team primed to go very deep in the playoffs.” Bigger, better. Lots better as the Kings outscored them 12-3 in four games. John Mackinnon: Ryan Smyth expected to announce retirement on Friday Asked directly about the 38-year-old...

His teammates expected there wouldn’t be any way Ryan Smyth would be able to keep his emotions in check when he addressed the Edmonton Oilers on Friday morning.
