Game Thread - Detroit Red Wings vs Anaheim Ducks

Habs Eyes On The Prize — 38 year old Saku Koivu is still getting it done. One of 4 positive possession players for the Ducks in this series, Koivu has taken tough competition and extreme defensive zone starts and still managed 3 points in 6 games. It's basically impossible to not cheer for the guy unless you have no heart. On the other side though, are the aging Detroit Red Wings, in their last Western Conference playoffs. The dynasty of the Red Wings essentially ended with the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom, but they still have guys like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg to make people get up and cheer. It'...

Zetterberg, Red Wings Force Game 7 In Anaheim

Anaheim Calling — Final Score: Ducks 3, Red Wings 4 (OT) First Period Recap: Based on the first five seconds of the game, it looked like it was going to be a very, very long night. As soon as Saku Koivu won the face-off, the Ducks went for a change. Gustav Nyquist took advantage of the sloppy change and took the puck into the Ducks zone. Luckily Ben Lovejoy gets back in time to block Nyquist's shot on Jonas Hiller. It continued to be all Red Wings for a good part of the first period. What seems to be the story of the series, the Ducks just couldn't keep Detroit out of their zone, nor could they...

Ducks vs Red Wings - Game Thread

Habs Eyes On The Prize — The Anaheim Ducks overachieved for most of the year, and they managed to win a tough Pacific Division. They grabbed a tough draw with the Detroit Red Wings, but if there's anything that former Hab Saku Koivu is used to, it's slaying dragons. Oh and there's that other guy worth cheering for named Teemu Selanne. On the other side of things, the old guard in Detroit is looking at possibly their last chance at glory, as 34 year old Pavel Datsyuk like only has a couple more great years left in him. The loss of Lidstrom was felt heavily on Detroit's blueline, but coach Mike Babcock is still...

Ducks Pull Impressive 3-1 Win Without Vets

Anaheim Calling — Final Score: Ducks 3, Canucks 1 As noted in the game preview, Anaheim was playing without Bobby Ryan (flu), Luca Sbisa (lower body) and scratched Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu and Bryan Allen. Amazingly after all of those scratches and Andrew Cogliano moving to center, Emerson Etem still couldn't find his way off the fourth line. First Period Recap: The Ducks had the better of a rather uneventful first period. They got the first power play opportunity of the game on an Alexandre Burrows hook, and as you might expect the Getzlaf-less PP unit was less than impressiv...

Dvorak is a savvy pickup for Ducks

Orange County Register — ANAHEIM – The two-goal game from his new linemate didn't make Saku Koivu's argument. It only emphasized it. How could Radek Dvorak, a veteran of 17 NHL seasons and 1,196 games, not be in the league when the season began on Jan. 19? Whether it was...

Saku's Anniversary (and other links)

Habs Eyes On The Prize — Today marks the anniversary of probably the most emotional day in 21st century Habs history. In September 2001, Montreal Canadiens centre and captain Saku Koivu was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. After missing the first 79 games on the 2001-2002 season, Koivu returned to the lineup in a game against the Ottawa Senators on April 9, 2002. Koivu received a nine-minute ovation from the Bell Centre faithful, longer than the 8:33 of ice time he received from coach Michel Therrien in the game. I was a mere whippersnapper of 10 when this game was played, and truthfully not that interes...

Winning Is Fun - Ducks 5, Stars 2

Anaheim Calling — Final Score: Ducks 5, Stars 2 First Period Recap: The second line of Emerson Etem, Andrew Cogliano, and Teemu Selanne begins the period humming (as expected), and Etem almost tips the puck into Kari Lehtonen's net as soon as the game begins. Kyle Palmieri and Saku Koivu also have some good chances, but the Ducks get to the halfway point of the first period without putting anything in. Finally, Radek Dvorak scores (his first goal as a Duck) off a feed from Ryan Getzlaf during a delayed penalty. Dvorak almost gets his second goal of the game before the period ends, but it wasn't m...

Ducks' Late Goal Tops Chicago in 2-1 Victory

Anaheim Calling — Final Score: Ducks 2, Blackhawks 1 First Period Recap: A few line changes to start the game saw Teemu Selanne skating alongside Andrew Cogliano and Peter Holland. That change brought Kyle Palmieri to a line with Daniel Winnik and Saku Koivu. The team as a whole started this game just as we'd become accustomed to seeing them play before this ugly four game stretch of major suck-i-tude. Fast paced, solid passing, forechecking, winning battles, etc. Chicago had no problem getting their game going as Jonas Hiller was tested early on with a few good chances from the Hawks and Patric...
