Game 43 Preview: Avalanche @ Ducks

After an offensive loss to the Blackhawks, the Avs (13-28-1) hit the road against the Ducks (25-13-9). Most nights the Avs' problem is goals. Tuesday night that was not the case as the Avs put up four goals against the Blackhawks and for the second game in a row blew a third period lead to lose the game. The Avs simulated a road game on Tuesday, but will head on the road for real Thursday when they head to Anaheim to face the Ducks. The Avs will be without Semyon Varlamov for the trip and for awhile as he continues to struggle with injuries. Spencer Martin was recalled Wednesday for...

Game Recap: Vancouver Defeats Colorado for Fourth Straight Win

The Vancouver Canucks are having a happy New Year! This would be their first four consecutive victories since the beginning of the season (remember that!?). This new year also brought a new(ish) face with Anton Rodin playing the second game of his NHL career. Rodin is replacing Alexandre Burrows while he misses time due to a scratched eye. Calvin Pickard got the start tonight and has been manning the pipes while Semyon Varlamov is injured....

Leafs at Avalanche Recap: Leafs Crush Avalanche 6-0

Blowout in Denver, big nights for the Freddies. The Leafs were on the road tonight, playing the franchise highest in altitude and lowest in points. They slaughtered them. First Period The game opened with some quick offensive exchanges, and Mitch Marner made a Kessel-style streak up the right wing and wired a shot off the post behind Semyon Varlamov. Neither team is famed for its defensive prowess, and they traded chances early. Marner had another golden opportunity on a partial break where he couldn’t quite put the puck in the gap between Varlamov’s left pad and the post. Beloved...

The Colorado Avalanche Did Not Beat the Minnesota Wild

The Colorado Avalanche Did Not Beat the Minnesota Wild

The one good thing about Colorado's season before tonight (not losing to Minnesota) is now a thing of the past. 1st Period: Complete domination by the Wild. Somehow they only netted one goal despite their vast success. Colorado, unsurprisingly, did not score at all. Charley Coyle, Minnesota's leading goal-scorer got the credit for the tally on the power play. A shot from the point by Matt Dumba led to a rebound, Eric Staal got a stick on it, and then Coyle tucked it away. About the only good thing an Avalanche player did was in the form of a beautiful save by Semyon Varlamov in the first...

Game 31 Preview: Avalanche @ Wild

Game 31 Preview: Avalanche @ Wild

After starting off the road trip on the wrong foot, the Avs (11-18-1) look to avoid a fourth straight loss in Minnesota Tuesday night. The struggle continues. With a 4-1 loss in Winnipeg Sunday, the Avs have dropped three straight games for the second time this season. The Avalanche are now 2-9-1 in the last twelve games and are firmly in last place in the NHL. Things are bleak in Avalancheville and with the roaster freeze upon us for the holidays, it seems like we will likely have to wait until 2017 to see any real change to this faltering team. One bright spot, Semyon Varlamov will...
