Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov returns to ice in morning skate

Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov returns to ice in morning skate

Only four players took part in Wednesday's morning skate for the Avalanche. But one of them was Semyon Varlamov, which has to be considered great news for the team.

W2W4: Blackhawks at Avalanche

Here are some key things to watch for as the Blackhawks visit the Avalanche. • Hawks won’t have to face Varly: For now, the Hawks won’t have to figure out the puzzle that is Avalanche starting goalie Semyon Varlamov, who is out of Wednesday’s game with a groin injury. Varlamov was a brilliant against Hawks last season, totaling 168 saves on 175 shots against the Hawks. He was so good that the Hawks’ only win over the Avalanche last year came against his backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who they beat seven times in a 7-2 win in Chicago last December.

Varly put on IR, Stollery recalled from Lake Erie

Erik Johnson is a candidate to be the 10th currently injured Avalanche player and is considered a game-time decision for tonight's contest vs the Chicago Blackhawks. Just in case, Colorado has recalled Karl Stollery from the Monsters and put Semyon Varlamov on IR retroactive to November 15th to make room. Stollery made his Avs debut last January  and was played sparingly in two games. This year he's on the top pair in LEM with Max Noreau and has 3G/4A in 16 games. Stay tuned, final lineup news will be posted in the Game Day Thread around 8pm ET tonight.

Three's Company: Game 20- Caps @ Avs

The Avalanche (6-8-5) return home looking to earn their third straight win against the Capitals (8-7-3) without their star goalie, Semyon Varlamov. It's been awhile since last game, but it's now officially the quarter mark of the season. Last Saturday the Avs defeated the Devils 3-2 in Jersey to earn back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Their reward, if you can call it that was four days off. While I'm sure the rest was good, the result was that a lot of teams ahead of the Avs played games and won them. Entering Thursday, the Avs find themselves five points out of a...

Varlamov Day-to-Day with Groin Injury, Pickard Called Up

The Avalanche have called up Calvin Pickard from the Lake Erie Monsters and stated that Semyon Varlamov is back to being day-to-day with a groin injury that doesn't seem to be fully healing. Sami Aittokallio was recalled by LEM from the Ft Wayne Komets yesterday, starting speculation as to what misfortune might have befallen one of our netminders. Pickard is 2-3-3 since rejoining the Monsters a few weeks ago, with a .917 Sv% and 2.76 GAA on the year in the AHL. In 2 games for Colorado he stopped 63 of 70 shots and took a couple of losses. If Varly is out for a while, Reto Berra (2-1-1,...

Game 19 Recap: Avs finally get a fun flight home

Luck was with the Avs tonight. Oh, and they're three points out of a playoff spot. Three points from third in the division. Things aren't so bad. Before the Avalanche could get anything going, the Devils got on the board just over two minutes into the game. Once again, the Avs were forced to come from behind early. Martin Havlat got the honors for New Jersey, taking advantage of a juicy rebound to send the puck past Semyon Varlamov. Colorado didn't let that get them down, though, and tied it up via a hard-working shift by the second line. Jarome Iginla chipped the puck behind the net where...
