Game Preview: Avalanche vs Jets

The Colorado Avalanche have lost three of its last four games. The good news? It was against the top two teams in each of the Western Conference divisions, they got three points, and it was all without starting goalie Semyon Varlamov, who was tending to a legal matter. After a few days of practice, the team has deemed him worthy again of action and he'll get the nod tonight against the visiting Winnipeg Jets. The Jets, after a decent start to the season, have fallen off considerably. They've lost three of their last ten games, including a 2-1 affair against the Avs on January 18th, and...

Goalie-Go-Round: Who Should Start For Ducks Quick Trip To Division Leading Los Angeles?

John Gibson is coming off an All Star first half of the season, but Frederik Andersen has history on his side against the Angelenos. It's not unique to the Anaheim Ducks for head coach Bruce Boudreau to have a bit of a conundrum between the pipes for his teams. Come playoff time during his tenure in Washington it was Olaf Kolzig or Cristobal Huet, then Jose Theodore or Semyon Varlamov, and even Michal Neuvirth or Varlamov. With the Anaheim Ducks he's already had to deal with Jonas Hiller or Viktor Fasth (remember him?), Hiller or Frederik Andersen, and Anderson or John Gibson. While it's...

Semyon Varlamov Civil Suit Verdict

After five days of court proceedings, a grand jury has finally ruled on Semyon Varlamov's civil suit concerning his 2013 assault and battery charges. On October 29th, 2013, Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov was accused of domestic violence by then-girlfriend Evgeniya Vavrinyuk. Fifty-three days later, the Denver District Attorney declined to press charges, citing a lack of evidence. "That's not to say we don't believe our victim," said DA spokesperson Lynn Kimbrough to the Denver Post. "Most of the time additional investigation strengthens our case. This time it became clear we...

Game 52 Preview: Avs @ Kings

After a brutal loss in San Jose, the Avalanche (26-22-3) head south to Los Angeles to take on the Kings (30-15-3) in their final game before the All-Star break. Nothing went right for the Avalanche Tuesday. With Semyon Varlamov being drawn into civil court in Denver and three players coming down with the flu, the Avs were shorthanded early and often. With eight penalties including two ten-minute misconducts late in the game, the Avalanche surrendered three power play goals on their way to a 6-3 loss to the Sharks. The Avs will get no time to recover, however, as they head south to LA to...
