Helping U.S. win bronze a silver lining for Gionta and Carter after Devils’ disappointing season

Fire & Ice | Bergen Record — A year ago, Stephen Gionta and Ryan Carter were helping the Devils reach the Stanley Cup Finals. This season, the Devils failed to miss the playoffs, but Gionta and Carter made the best of the disappointment by helping the U.S. win the bronze medal in the IIHF World Championships in Sweden and Finland. The bronze was the first medal for the U.S. in the world championships since it also captured bronze in 2004. “It was a fun tournament and, obviously, it helps coming home with something,” Gionta said today. “The ultimate goal is the make the (NHL) playoffs and play in that, but to go over an...

Devils expect Kostopoulos to be “all right”; Zajac battles flu; Zubrus rusty in return

Fire & Ice | Bergen Record — It was a scary moment that clearly impacted both teams. With the Devils trailing 2-0 in the first period tonight, Islanders left wing Matt Martin hit Devils center Stephen Gionta in the neutral zone and right wing Tom Kostopoulos saw this as an opportunity to stand up for a teammate and possibly spark his team. It went bad quickly, though, as Martin landed a right hand directly to Kostopoulous’ chin on his second punch attempt. Kostopoulos immediately crumpled to the ice and Martin quickly signaled to the Devils’ bench for the trainer. The good news after the game was that Kostopoulos is g...
