The defender talks candidly about the headaches that have stalled the start of his season. Plus, Radulov marks a milestone, Team North America version 2018, and more. Dallas Stars fans have missed Stephen Johns, but maybe not as much as Johns has missed playing hockey. The young defender has yet to make his season debut as post-traumatic headaches keep him on the injured reserved list. Coping with the pain, and its consequences, has been an uphill battle – and he opened up about it to Stars writer Mark Stepneski in a new interview: “It’s been more mental. It’s hard to be in a good...

Dallas Stars Defense in a Shuffle as Stephen Johns Starts Season on IR with Post-Traumatic Headaches

Stephen Johns is skating, but his return is still uncertain Ever since the departure of Jason Demers* in the 2016 offseason, I’ve looked forward to seeing the right side of the Dallas Stars defense line up with Julius Honka, John Klingberg, and Stephen Johns. It seems like a good mix of skill and size, with all three players have good-to-great skating ability. And, for the third straight year, it is quite possible that we will see something else. Here is where we stand on season’s eve, as it was announced this week that Stephen Johns will begin the season on IR with what Jim Nill...

Stars defenseman Stephen Johns diagnosed with post-traumatic headaches

FRISCO -- Stars defenseman Stephen Johns could return to practice as soon as Wednesday morning, following a bout with post-traumatic headaches, coach Jim Montgomery said Tuesday.Johns has practiced once with the Stars since the team returned from Boise on Sept. 16, and was placed on injured reserve prior to Dallas setting its 23-man opening night roster. Montgomery said Johns first felt symptoms as the Stars returned from Idaho."It stems from some muscle-tightening that creates headaches," Montgomery said. "It's not the same as a concussion, and there's a lot of people that get diagnosed with...

Tuesday Links: Connor Carrick Gets Ready For His Close-Up

Stephen Johns’ injury puts the Stars’ newest recruit in the spotlight. Plus, Tom Wilson goes to DoPS, Nico Hischier returns to Switzerland, and more. The bad news for the Dallas Stars is that star defender Stephen Johns has an undisclosed injury that has put him on the injured reserve list. The good news is that they appear to have made a sound decision to trade for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Connor Carrick yesterday. GM Jim Nill explained the reasoning behind the deal, as documented by Sean Shapiro of The Athletic: “You can never have enough depth on defense,” [Nill] said....

FRISCO -- A preseason absence could open up an opportunity for young Stars defenseman Gavin Bayreuther, the 24-year-old second-year pro who has never played in an NHL game.Stephen Johns, expected to be a stalwart in the Stars' top two defensive pairings, missed practice again Friday morning, and has practiced just once since the team returned from Boise on Sept. 16. Johns has not played in any of Dallas' six preseason games.Stars coach Jim Montgomery said earlier this week that the team hoped Johns would recover from the undisclosed injury to play in the final exhibition Sunday against...

What kind of impact does the defense pair of John Klingberg and Miro Heiskanen have down the lineup?

What kind of impact does the defense pair of John Klingberg and Miro Heiskanen have down the lineup?

Occasionally an unexpected gift drops out of the sky that brightens an otherwise normal day into something special. Tuesday night had one of those gifts in the Dallas Stars exhibition season opener at home against the St. Louis Blues. Starting on the first defense pair were the duo of John Klingberg and Miro Heiskanen.Heiskanen coming over has been anticipated for a full year. We can be reasonably confident that he's going to be a very good NHLer very fast. The assumption has been that he would play with someone like Stephen Johns. He very likely still will be, but for one night Jim...
