Dallas Stars 2013 Season Review: Vernon Fiddler

Defending Big DVernon Fiddler is an extremely useful player for the Stars. He's good at taking face-offs, plays excellent defense, and is an all out grinding player who never quits on a play or a game. He has come to represent the style of play the Dallas Stars have wanted to go forward with, although he doesn't really have the offensive skill of the players that have been called on to carry the team forward. Fiddler, and his partner in crime Eric Nystrom, drew a lot of heat from us and other fans in the beginning of the season through no real fault of their own. Glen Gulutzan loved to play them in a...

Looking ahead to 2013-2014: Vernon Fiddler and Eric Nystrom

Defending Big D — As the 2013 season progressed Glen Gulutzan began to rely more and more on the duo of Eric Nystrom and Vernon Fiddler. Part of that reliance was out of necessity after the white flag trades of the trade deadline. In other respects the Stars made the two depth forwards more than depth forwards. At times it looked successful, and other times it looked not-so-successful. What happened, and was it actually very successful? We need to know how they were used before we can attempt to draw any conclusions. Fiddler ES TOI/60 PK TOI/60 PP TOI/60 2013 9.86 2.28 0.44 2012 11.53 1.93 0.13 ...

Fantasy Hockey News for Saturday

Fantasy Hockey Scouts — Lets go with Alex Chiasson for fantasy line of the night with 2 goals, 2 hits, and 4 shots. This whole NHL thing is no big deal as he's been killing it. He was held off the scoresheet in his NHL debut but since then he's 5+1=6 in his next four games. Vernon Fiddler had done basically nothing all season but all of a sudden he's on fire. Two more apples last night gives him 2+7=9 over his last five games. Talk about out of nowhere. Third straight 2-point game for the Wizard, Ray Whitney, as he had a powerplay goal and an assist last night. Not a lot of talk about Alex Goligoski this seas...

Success For Dallas Stars' Alex Chiasson Comes As No Surprise

Defending Big D — In the final minute of the first period of just his second NHL game, Alex Chiasson received a pass as he exited the Dallas Stars defensive zone and aggressively skated up the middle of the ice. His quick move and pass to Vernon Fiddler on his wing quickly created a two-on-two situation against the Anaheim Ducks defense, as Chiasson showed another big burst as he cut up the middle. Blowing past Cam Fowler and out-muscling him to the net, Chiasson deftly redirected Fiddler's pass into the net past Viktor Fasth -- giving Chiasson his first NHL goal and the Stars an improbable 3-1 lead. It...

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Toby Petersen Called Up, Could Play Today

Defending Big D — WIth Vernon Fiddler going down Friday with a leg injury against the Minnesota Wild and Ryan Garbutt still shelved with a busted hand, the Dallas Stars needed another player to fill in on the lower lines for their critical back-to-back series starting today. Enter Toby Petersen, who has spent the entire season with the Texas Stars after spending most of the past several years in Dallas. He was called up by the Dallas Stars on Saturday and is expected to play today as neither Fiddler or Garbutt will likely be in the lineup. And it will be a reunion with one of his old teammates - Jaromir...

Penalties Continue to Plague Dallas Stars

Defending Big D — If there's been a consistent theme among the Dallas Stars losses this season, it's been too many penalties. "It's something that if we're going to have any chance in this league, we're going to have to figure it out right quick," center Vernon Fiddler said after the Stars took eight penalties in a 2-0 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. "If we don't, we're not going to win many games." We posted a story earlier this week detailing the types of calls the Stars are struggling with, and things remained essentially the same in the next few games. The Stars are taking far too many stick-foul calls...
