And suddenly, the Leafs were the odds on favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Auston Matthews, John Tavaers, William Nylander and Mitch Marner.  […] Toronto Maple Leafs Will Not Win the Stanley Cup - Editor In Leaf - Editor In Leaf - A Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

William Nylander is the last player who will bite into the Leafs cap space

William Nylander is the last player who will bite into the Leafs cap space

Or so it seems right now. How much will be left over when his contract is signed in case the Leafs want to add another player? We last looked at the full list of Maple Leafs cap hits before the draft. Since then, much has changed, including some trades, some signings, and with about two months to go before the start of training camp, the Leafs have enough players signed at all positions to put a 23-man roster together. Only the cap hits of the 23-man roster count against the cap, along with some odds and ends of extras. The only player without a contract is William Nylander. By making some...

The Maple Leafs Dubious Dubas

“We can, and we will.” That’s how newly-minted Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas confidently replied to SportsNet’s Elliott Friedman when asked recently if the Leafs will be able to retain just-acquired superstar John Tavares and their trio of young studs in Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner and William Nylander. It was the kind of statement expected […] The post The Maple Leafs Dubious Dubas appeared first on The Hockey Writers.

2018 Top 25 Maple Leafs under 25: Community vote begins today

There are 47 players up for nomination this year; who’s on your list? Every summer we here at Pension Plan Puppets kitten ranching and John Tavares statue manufacturing take time out between margaritas at our off-season company retreat and squabble among ourselves about who the top 25 Maple Leafs under the 25 are. Things can get heated, especially when I force people to choose between William Nylander and Mitch Marner. This year we want to share the burden with you and reward you for your efforts. Our friends at the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum have sent us some limited...

Maple Leafs’ Options to Upgrade Defence

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed John Tavares to a seven-year, $77-million contract, vaulting them up to the top spot as the favourite to win the Stanley Cup next year. The Leafs now boast Tavares, Auston Matthews and Nazem Kadri at centre with Mitch Marner, William Nylander and Patrick Marleau on the wing, forming arguably the […] The post Maple Leafs’ Options to Upgrade Defence appeared first on The Hockey Writers.

Updated depth chart, cap space and SPC count

Updated depth chart, cap space and SPC count

With a trade and some signings, the picture is as clear as it can be until William Nylander is signed. With the signing of Tyler Ennis and the trade of Matt Martin, Cap Friendly is showing the Leafs with 11 forwards under contract who were NHL-roster players at the end of last year. Unfortunately one of those is Nathan Horton, so to figure out the actual cap hit of the roster right now, we need to add in a few more players. The first two are obvious: William Nylander and Andreas Johnsson, and I’ve used a very generous over-estimation of nine million for those two before, so we can stick...

Are the Maple Leafs done making moves?

Are the Maple Leafs done making moves?

Well that’s over, right! Now it’s time to hit the beach and wait for September. Or is it? It’s not unreasonable to think that signing one $11 million man is enough for one day. The Leafs actually added some depth at the AHL and AHL/NHL level too. But are they done? They have some cap space, enough to sign the rest of their RFAs, including William Nylander, and still have some left over. They have 42 SPCs free and only four RFAs to add to that, so there’s room for more players within reason and still have space to sign some draft picks. But is there need to add any more players? As...

KOSHAN: Babcock envisioning a Tavares/Marner fit in new-look Maple Leafs lineup

John Tavares is three months from taking his first shift with the Toronto Maple Leafs, yet already he is having an impact on the lineup. Leafs coach Mike Babcock said on Sunday that if the 2018-19 season started today, his top two lines would include Auston Matthews between Patrick Marleau and William Nylander, and Tavares […]

The John Tavares contract details tell us who this new Leafs team really is

The John Tavares contract details tell us who this new Leafs team really is

This is the biggest deal on the books for the Leafs so far, although we might see a similar deal for Auston Matthews. The basics are easy. The signing of John Tavares adds $11 million in cap hit for the Leafs this season, which without William Nylander signed, leaves the team with almost $14 million in cap space for him and Andreas Johnsson. The Leafs need to add some more incidental players to the roster, too, but they won’t be expensive. This is all doable without using the LTIR pool created by Nathan Horton’s contract. But that extra $5.3 million is always there to use for additions...

The Toronto Maple Leafs know that William Nylander will want a long-term extension this summer but what exactly could he be looking for? Your Monthly Do No Trade William Nylander Notice

The Toronto Maple Leafs can not trade William Nylander. William Nylander is untouchable. Trading Nylander is idiotic, insane, short-sighted, laughable and crazy. Not to mince words or anything, but I am not a fan of the idea. Not under any circumstances. It doesn’t matter what your positional needs are, you don’t trade elite players who […] Your Monthly Do No Trade William Nylander Notice - Editor In Leaf - Editor In Leaf - A Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More
