Kane disappointed; Chelios on his way?

Thrashers Blog | Atlanta Journal-Constitution — Just arriving at Thrashers practice following last night’s loss to Nashville and before departing for Columbus. I am chasing reports that the Thrashers will recall Chris Chelios from AHL Chicago. No official word yet, but I will let you know as soon as I hear something definitive. Coach John Anderson said that a call-up was option with Christoph Schubert being out 3-5 weeks. The options Chelios or Arturs Kulda. My guess would be Chelios. Why else would you sign the 25-year veteran last week to be available for the playoff push? Stay tuned. I caught up with Evander Kane this morning befor...

Schubert out three weeks

Thrashers Blog | Atlanta Journal-Constitution — More bad news on the injury front for the Thrashers today. Coach John Anderson said defenseman Christoph Schubert will miss three weeks with a pulled muscle in his hip. This comes on the heals of Evander Kane’s scheduled CT scan on his injured foot to reveal the extent of the damage. Kane’s test was scheduled for 11 a.m. and I will let you know once I found out the results. Schubert, who suffered the injury Saturday in Tampa Bay and missed Sunday’s game against Carolina,  played just three games after missing 13 games with a knee injury. Anderson said the current plan is no c...

Final Kane test results due today

Thrashers Blog | Atlanta Journal-Constitution — We are awaiting official word on Evander Kane’s injury. I should know something today, but I would be surprised if it was not a broken foot. He left the arena after last night’s game with a large walking boot (similar to the one Ilya Kovalchuk had earlier this season) and using crutches. I’m no doctor, but I would imagine the location and the severity of the injury will determine how much time Kane misses. He was having a decent rookie season with 25 points (14 goals, 11 assists). This is the third broken foot on the team this season with Kovalchuk and Mark Popovic all missed...

  • Wagner sharper in second appearance Atlanta Braves with David O'Brien | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — Now this was more like it from Braves closer Billy Wagner, who faced three batters in the fourth inning and recorded three outs, including one strikeout and a double-play grounder. The veteran lefty allowed three hits and two runs in his spring debut Friday against Washington. “I feel like I had better command of the strike zone, and that to me is key,” said Wagner, 38, who missed most of last season with the Mets while recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. Wagner, who recorded 59 of his 385 career saves during two seasons with the Phillies in...
  • Glaus has eight consecutive hits Atlanta Braves with David O'Brien | Atlanta Journal-Constitution 8-for-8: Troy Glaus had three more hits Tuesday night against Philly to give the Braves’ new first baseman eight singles in eight plate appearances over the past three games. The 6-foot-6 veteran, a converted third baseman and former American League home run leader, singled to start a four-run fourth inning that gave the Braves a 4-2 lead. But it didn’t last long. Braves lefty relief prospect Jose Ortegano was undermined by shaky defense and knocked around for five runs and six hits in the sixth inning of a 7-4 loss.
  • Schafer’s tale of two springs Atlanta Braves with David O'Brien | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – A year ago, Jordan Schafer was the talk of Braves spring training. The plucky rookie played so well in camp and with so much energy that the Braves made him their opening day center fielder. This spring it’s an entirely different story for Schafer, who’s trying to come back from Sept. 5 surgery on his left wrist. He goes almost unnoticed in a corner of the clubhouse, does most of his hitting in batting cages, off a tee and recently with a soft-tossing coach. Tuesday was a good one for Schafer, 23, who said he hit without pain. Said the hand and wrist...
  • Chipper on Heyward: Braves need him from Day 1 Atlanta Braves with David O'Brien | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – For the first time this spring, the Braves used a lineup Tuesday night against Philadelphia that looked like one they might use opening day. “Pretty close,” manager Bobby Cox said of the possibility. “[But] I don’t know if Heyward will be hitting that low, if he keeps going like this.” Cox was smiling when he said it, but that comment reflected two truths: Jason Heyward is playing his way onto the opening-day roster, and the 20-year-old phenom seems too good to bat seventh for very long. “Chipper might be batting seventh,” said veteran third bas...
  • Jurrjens passes last test before Yankees Atlanta Braves with David O'Brien | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Yes, he nearly took Matt Diaz’s head off with one pitch. But other than that, things went smoothly Tuesday for Braves right-hander Jair Jurrjens in his final test before game action. After spending the first 2-1/2 weeks of camp recovering from an inflamed pitching shoulder, Jurrjens threw five minutes of pain-free batting practice against teammates. He threw BP on the main field Tuesday night at Champion Stadium, a few hours before the Braves faced the Phillies in their first night game of the spring and eighth game overall. J.J.’s next assignment: the Yank...
  • Falcons sign cornerback Brent Grimes; waive Swinton Atlanta Falcons with D. Orlando Ledbetter | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thomas DeCoud congratulates Brent Grimes, who led the team with six interceptions. (Kathy Willens/AP) Cornerback Brent Grimes, a former undrafted rookie free agent, was signed to an exclusive rights free agent contract on Tuesday. In an unrelated move, the Falcons released wide receiver James Swinton, who was on the practice squad. Grimes started eight of 16 games last season and led the team with six interceptions.
