Kovalchuk’s Possible Return: To Trade or Not to Trade

Kovalchuk’s Possible Return: To Trade or Not to Trade

Ilya Kovalchuk may finally be on his way back to the NHL. His ability to play all hinges on signing with the New Jersey Devils; if he does sign, should the Devils keep him or trade him in hopes of improving the team? You know it’s the offseason when we’re discussing the seemingly annual New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk rumors! Recently, reports have surfaced indicating that Kovy is on his way back to the NHL and John wrote an extended piece about it. Today, I look at the two options the Devils could explore: bringing him back into the fold, or signing and trading him. Come Back...

Devils’ Top Prospect, Michael McLeod, is Tearing. It. Up.

Devils’ Top Prospect, Michael McLeod, is Tearing. It. Up.

Michael McLeod is in the OHL playoffs and he is among the most electric players in the league right now. I talk about his performance and its context. I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention to Brian’s Prospect Updates or not, but the Devils’ 2016 first rounder (#12 overall), Michael McLeod’s, Mississauga Steelheads are up 3 games to none in the OHL Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Peterborough Petes — it’s also just striking me how totally Canada the names of these teams are. But anyway, here’s the bracket: If you need context, you can view the...

The New Jersey Devils Should Push to Sign Kevin Shattenkirk

The New Jersey Devils Should Push to Sign Kevin Shattenkirk

This post explains why Ray Shero and the New Jersey Devils should as hard as they can get to get free agent defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk this summer. This post goes into why he’s good, how he’d help the Devils, and how the Devils can afford a big contract at this point in time. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was one of the biggest names traded prior to this past season’s trade deadline. The Washington Capitals acquired him (and an AHL goalie) for Zach Sanford, Brad Malone, their 2017 first round pick, and conditional picks. It was a big trade for a franchise looking to get over...

Devils in the Details - 4/24/17: A Return? Edition

Here are your links for today: Devils Links Well, it’s about that time of year again. You know, when the “Ilya Kovalchuk returns to the NHL” machine gets revved up. So over the weekend, Elliotte Friedman and our old friend Tom Gulitti gave us this little gem: @FriedgeHNIC said Ilya Kovalchuk wants to return to NHL and he can either play for Devils or needs approval of all teams to play elsewhere.— Tom Gulitti (@TomGulittiNHL) April 23, 2017 There is presumably a little more flame to go with this smoke for Friedman and Gulitti to pass along a rumor like this. For more...

New Jersey Devils 2017-18 Ticket Prices for Members Are Available

New Jersey Devils 2017-18 Ticket Prices for Members Are Available

For the first time in a few seasons, the New Jersey Devils have made the membership (season ticket) ticket prices for 2017-18 season available to the public. This post looks at the release and has mixed thoughts about its map and pricing. Recently, the New Jersey Devils have a brand new website: True Since ‘82. I first found it through the Devils sub-reddit (yes, I don’t forget you, r/devils). It’s readily accessible through the Devils’ official website, under Tickets and through the link entitled 2017-18 Devils Membership. That link re-directs you to the True Since ‘82...

Reports: Ilya Kovalchuk Wants to Come Back to the NHL for 2017-18

Reports: Ilya Kovalchuk Wants to Come Back to the NHL for 2017-18

Through Tom Gulitti and Elliotte Friedman, Ilya Kovalchuk apparently wants to come back to the NHL for 2017-18. This post goes into why he was a big deal, how this is relevant for the Devils, what his value could be, and more. Last night, former Bergen Record beat writer for the New Jersey Devils and current NHL.com writer Tom Guilitti dropped a Devils-related bomb of news on Twitter, citing Elliotte Friedman. @FriedgeHNIC said Ilya Kovalchuk wants to return to NHL and he can either play for Devils or needs approval of all teams to play elsewhere.— Tom Gulitti (@TomGulittiNHL) April...

Determining Damon Severson’s Next Deal

Determining Damon Severson’s Next Deal

There are numerous Devils who will be restricted free agents this offseason. The Devils will need to decide what to do with these players. Perhaps the highest profile of these skaters is Damon Severson. What will his next contract look like? If a player wants to get paid, arguably the best way to do so is to dominate in a contract year. For the “what have you done for me lately” group, there is nothing better, and it usually leads to a large contract, whether with the original team or elsewhere. This can be especially true for unrestricted free agents, but it has its benefits for...

Cap Space Remains One of the Devils’ Biggest Assets

Cap Space Remains One of the Devils’ Biggest Assets

The Devils are a team with a lot of work remaining in their rebuild. They do have some tools to work with to improve the team, though, and chief among them may be their room under the salary cap ceiling. With the offseason getting into full swing for New Jersey, sights again turn from why exactly this team is broken to how Ray Shero and company might go about fixing it. This summer, the Devils will not be looking for one last piece to plug a hole in the lineup, rather trying to fill in the myriad holes which plagued the team and resulted in their distant last place finish in the Eastern...

Throwback Thursday - Bobby Carpenter

Throwback Thursday - Bobby Carpenter

A look at Bobby Carpenter’s time in New Jersey with his name being in the news recently for all the right reasons. Forgotten in the annals of New Jersey Devils history at times is that of New Jersey’s 3 Stanley Cup victories, only 6 players were present for all 3; one of those players was on the ice for one and behind the bench for the other two. That man is none other than Bobby Carpenter, whose name has resurfaced in the news recently. Carpenter ran the Boston Marathon in 2016, stating he wouldn’t do it again for himself. When the prospect of running it again with and for Denna...

Adam Henrique Wasn’t Given a Fair Shake

Adam Henrique Wasn’t Given a Fair Shake

No one denies that Adam Henrique had a down year. He did, and the Devils as a team went the way he did. However, he was summarily overlooked by the AATJ staff in the awards for this year. I want to argue on his behalf today. Perhaps rightfully so, Adam Henrique did not win an award this year in AATJ’s season awards. He was not very offensive, was not as defensively sound as he normally was, and was outvoted by Travis Zajac on being the most versatile 8-2. For those of us who watched him play all year, that makes valid sense. His play from previous seasons certainly fell to a degree....

Playoff Bandwagon-ing: 2K17 Edition!

Not sure who you want to root for in the playoffs with our New Jersey Devils not even coming close to qualifying? Then take a look at this somewhat handy, somewhat joking guide to determining who your team should be! The 2016-17 campaign is mercifully over for our New Jersey Devils, but there are still a few sweet, sweet weeks of hockey left before we head into the offseason; ironically enough, the summer for the Devs might be more interesting than the on-ice product was towards the end. With the playoffs starting last night, I decided to bring back my primer last year for pros and cons...

Your eyes do not deceive you. Your ears might, though. Welcome to the first episode of the New Jersey Devils podcast, Talking Red, since the beginning of March. David Sarch has a good explanation as to why. I (with a popped collar) join him as we review a whole lot from this past season from the coaching staff, various...
