Oakland A’s name Ryan Christenson as new bench coach

He’s been a manager in the A’s minors for 5 years, including 2 championships. The Oakland A’s named Ryan Christenson as their new bench coach on Thursday, the team announced. The 43-year-old spent the last five seasons as a manager in the A’s minor league system Christenson, a SoCal native, spent most of his playing career in Oakland. He was drafted by the A’s in 1995 and made his MLB debut three years later, grading out as a solid CF but a light hitter. He roamed the Coliseum outfield until being traded midway through 2001, and retired two years later after quick stints with...

Imagining the effects of a drastic realignment

Imagining the effects of a drastic realignment

Running wild with wild rumors. It seems like baseball has a quarterly tradition of talking expansion and realignment. Maybe that’s an effort to avoid talking about the juiced ball, but baseball has a long history of talking about adding new teams and changing up the divisions. It’s rare for these things to actually happen, and that’s probably good - the sport is best off sticking with consistency for at least a reasonable amount of time. Adding teams and changing schedules and getting ownership buy-in and all that non-sense is no easy task in a sport that often lacks common sense....

AFL Eye Test: Neuse, Romero, atmosphere

AFL Eye Test: Neuse, Romero, atmosphere

Initial thoughts on Oakland A’s prospects Sheldon Neuse and Miguel Romero after first seeing them live at the Mesa Solar Sox AFL game on October 17. The AFL atmosphere is like no other baseball game I have ever been to. It combines the intimacy of lower level minor league games, where a sneeze can be heard from the other side of the stadium, with the professionalism of top prospects nearing the big leagues. Attendance at on Tuesday night to watch the Mesa Solar Sox take on the Salt River Rafters was 625, and it seemed like half of the crowd was composed of scouts with radar guns and...

A’s Off-Season Quest: DITR FOTR SP

A’s Off-Season Quest: DITR FOTR SP

Anchored by the uncertainty that is Sean Manaea, Kendall Graveman, Daniel Mengden, and Paul Blackburn, the further uncertainty that is Jharel Cotton, Chris Bassitt, Daniel Gossett, Andrew Triggs, and Frankie Montas, and then that whole other category that is Jesse Hahn, the A’s are overtly in the market to add at least one SP to the 2018 mix. Roll snake eyes and that addition could conceivably vault the A’s into the wild card picture, and Oakland has rolled it several times in just the past few seasons. Bartolo Colon was aging and declining, only as it turned out he really wasn’t...

What can the A’s learn from the rest of the playoffs? If one thing is clear from the MLB playoffs, it’s that their 3000x worse without the A’s.
