Season in review: Paul Scruggs community ranking and offseason outlook

Season in review: Paul Scruggs community ranking and offseason outlook

There was a void in perimeter scoring for Xavier after Tre and JP graduated, and Paul Scruggs took a big step forward to fill it last season. He looks every bit like the player we were expecting him to become. Some technical difficulties slowed our poll results, but we’re back with the player-by-player autopsy of the season and a look at where each guy needs to develop to fit into next year’s plan. Paul Scruggs came out of high school as the purported jewel of Chris Mack's last good class at Xavier. A big-bodied guard out of Indianapolis, he proved worthy of the hype as a freshman...

Season in review: Tyrique Jones community ranking and offseason outlook

Season in review: Tyrique Jones community ranking and offseason outlook

Xavier's junior big man was a force in the paint and has set himself up for a monster senior season. Also, he has the meanest mugs. Some technical difficulties slowed our poll results, but we’re back with the player-by-player autopsy of the season and a look at where each guy needs to develop to fit into next year’s plan. What was the turning point of Xavier's season last year, as they went from struggling to stay afloat to finishing as one of the hottest teams in the nation? You could point to a lot of things, not least of which was a defensive revival, but one factor that hardly went...

Angela Wyss: Musketeer on the Rise Special Edition

Angela Wyss: Musketeer on the Rise Special Edition

Part counselor, academic adviser, and success coach, this remarkable woman helps Xavier student-athletes stay on track to graduate. The father was agitated. His son, a student athlete at Xavier University, was due to graduate in three short weeks, or was he? Ben, (not his real name), had just told his Dad that he was having some “issues” in a 2nd year finance class, a course he would need to pass in order to graduate on time. “I’m calling Angela. She knows our son better than we do,” the exasperated father barked to his wife after hanging up with his son. That afternoon,...

Season in Review: Naji Marshall

Season in Review: Naji Marshall

Naji Marshall wrung himself out for Xavier this season. Some technical difficulties slowed our poll results, but we’re back with the player-by-player autopsy of the season and a look at where each guy needs to develop to fit into next year’s plan. Naji Marshall was Xavier’s fourth or fifth option on the floor last season. Reflective of that, he finished seventh on the team in usage rate. That changed this year when he vaulted to first on the team and used a frankly staggering 7.4% more possessions throughout the season. With the burden of carrying the team with a usage rate (25.7%)...

Xavier Lands Commitment from Sharpshooter CJ Wilcher

Xavier landed its second commitment for the 2020 recruiting class, with wing CJ Wilcher announcing his decision via Instagram earlier today. View this post on Instagram C O M M I T T E D ⚔️ A post shared by Cj Wilcher (@cj_wilcher) on Jun 7, 2019 at 9:01am PDT Wilcher, a 6’5”, four star prospect from New Jersey, is a high IQ player who is also an excellent shooter, and he should compliment other 2020 commit, Dwon Odom, very well. He is ranked 140th in 247’s recruiting rankings, and 113th in the composite rankings. Xavier was Wilcher’s only...

Season in Review: Quentin Goodin

Season in Review: Quentin Goodin

Q was the lightning rod for a team in transition. Some technical difficulties slowed our poll results, but we’re back with the player-by-player autopsy of the season and a look at where each guy needs to develop to fit into next year’s plan. As the point guard for a team that wasn’t as good as fans have become accustomed to, Quentin Goodin took a lot of the critique for Xavier’s disappointing season. While he never quite achieved what he had the year before, Goodin eventually showed plenty to make Coach Steele think he’s the man to carry the team back to the next level. Community...

NCAA basketball officially moves three-point line to international distance

NCAA basketball officially moves three-point line to international distance

The distance of 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches debuted in the NIT in March and has now been adopted by the NCAA. According to a release from the NCAA itself, the three-point line is moving back (again). When I was first pestering my dad to pull the ball back out of the peach basket for me, the length was 19' 9". That changed in 2007, when they moved it back by a foot to 20' 9". Threes kept dropping at increasing rates, so the line is scooting back to 22" 1¾", which I imagine is a round number in metric. Xavier wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire from deep last year, and this is another...

What does Travis Steele’s extension mean?

What does Travis Steele’s extension mean?

Travis Steele added another year to his contract, but why? When Travis Steele was hired last year, he was hired through the 2023 season. In Steele’s first season at the helm he took a team in transition to the NIT before losing to eventual consolation champion Texas. The Musketeers finished the season at 19-16 which, while it isn’t what the fanbase has become accustomed to, represented something of a success after a rough start. Yesterday, Xavier added another year to Steele’s contract with AD Greg Christopher saying, in part, “This extension reflects the confidence I have in the...

Xavier returns “Core Four” players who had declared for the NBA draft

Xavier returns “Core Four” players who had declared for the NBA draft

The Musketeers’ offseason just got a lot less stressful as their four vital upperclassmen all track to be back on campus for another year. The Travis Steele Era just caught another wave of momentum, as all four Xavier players who had declared for the NBA draft have taken their names out of consideration ahead of the deadline. Guards Quentin Goodin and Paul Scruggs, forward Naji Marshall, and post Tyrique Jones will all be back for the Muskies in the 2019-2020 season. In Goodin, Xavier returns one of the most successful pass-first point guards in the program’s history. Forced into duty...
